    Meh, I dont think so:

    Against BIG competition:

Scoring Defense Mich.................15.3 pts a game Scoring Defense MSU..................19.9 pts a game

Total Defense Mich....................284.6 yrds a game Total defense MSU.....................321.3 yds a game

Not sure how else to measure this. UM gives up 3 more yards a game on the ground but leads in just about every other defensive category.

You should probably go off from yards per play for the categories, gives the whole story. Michigan actually has a decent rushing defense, seeing the amount of times they are rushed against, but the passing defense stats are skewed badly.

    MSU passing defense:
    366 attempts against
    53.83% completion rate
    10.11 yards per completion
    5.44 yards per attempt

    Michigan passing defense
    276 attempts against
    57.61% completion rate
    10.52 yards per completion
    6.06 yards per attempt

    MSU rushing defense
    342 attempts against
    3.48 yards per attempt
    5 TDs allowed

    Michigan rushing defense
    445 attempts against
    3.74 yards per attempt
    8 TDs allowed

Exactly the main goal of your defense is to keep the other team from scoring. I would assume everyone here agrees with that? If the MSU defense is not decisively ahead of Michigan in this category how in the world is it clearly a better defense?

In the end .... JR could have quelled the rumors but did not do so. I am not saying he is coming to UM as I believe he is all MSU .... but the fact he decided to wait on comments is telling in some ways.

MSU is better than Michigan in total yardage.

Michigan's pass defense really isn't that good and the total passing defense numbers are skewed because of the lack of attempts and teams attacking the run defense, not because Michigan's pass defense is that good.

Do you really think Michigan has the best pass defense in the nation?

As for total points in conference play, Michigan really hasn't played any great offenses yet, except for Nebraska. MSU has already played OSU, Wisconsin, and if you want to count Nebraska.

I wouldn't count Wisconsin as a great offense this year. Especially with Stave going down in that game.

I used BIG TEN games only...I dont care what they did vs the MAC or UM did OOC.

bottom line...they played 4 common opponents at HOME and gave up more points in 3 of those games...UM gave up LESS to ND and NEB on the ROAD with horrible qb play in each of those games!!

C'mon give this D some props.

True, but they are scoring 28 points a game and they've run over B1G competition outside of MSU and OSU, both of which have good running defenses.

I am giving it props, but it isn't as good as MSU's. The thing that allows Michigan to be in the same range for points per game is MSU's undisciplined style of play.

Just because MSU has a worse record than Michigan, doesn't mean their defense isn't better.

That undisciplined play doesn't aid in nor is it irrelevant. MSU is the college version of the Lions IMO. They have, as you stated very little discipline which has cost them points over the season causing their defense to be less effective. This is not a trait of great defenses as you clearly feel MSU has.

  • IMO, Michigans Defense is better.

MSU has had 5-6 years to build it (using the rs program that they brag about) and this is it, they have peaked.

Mattison inherited a clown-show last year and already has built a better D that is still growing into an ELITE looking Defense.

  • They havent played an opponent of the same quality as Alabama. Take away that game and their game against Boise and then tell me what the stats are.

Michigan's pass defense really isn't that good, but every opposing team is choosing to try to run anyway? So you're saying it's clear to you that the defense isn't that good, but every other Big Ten coach can't seem to spot the same deficiencies as you?

  • I can agree with that as well. IMHO, I think MSU and UM defenses are pretty even right now, but we're on the way up an they're on the way out.

  • I think mandb21 is mostly right. I think msu d is better. They go 3 and out on offense and we move the ball to keep our d off the field. That poor msu defense basically has to stay on the field constantly and it still finds a way to keeps them in every game. They are probably more athletic as well.
Now I like aspects of our defense and Mattison much better, but they have some players over there and thise guys are good.
