I just think our top 10 defense is the x factor. Ohio will have only faced 1 other Defense that was any good and that was MSU and they didn't fare too well against them. OSU thrives off the big play cause they can't consistently drive the ball the length of the field due to Braxton's inconsistency throwing.

The problem is that the same can be said for Michigan this year. Denard thrives off the big play because his throwing hasn't gotten much better at all. Al Borges got a ton of crap the last few weeks because of this. Our D may be better, but until Michigan wins a big game on the road, I can't see more than a 40% chance to win.

That would truly be special. OSU playing for their undefeated season. Michigan playing for the Rose Bowl. I get shivers just thinking about this happening.

  • I don't have much faith in Denard running the offense in big games. In the three losses it was either turnovers or little production. Without a passing threat teams just sta ck the box and we have little success running or passing. Denard plays scared as witnessed against bama, MSU, and Nebraska. He struggles to complete anything beyond ten yards. The OSU defense is like Nebraska's. They still have talent and stacking the box will stop us. The Nebraska defense that gave up sixty to Ohio shut Denard down in the first half before the injury. The Michigan offense is easy to solve with a rb playing qb. Braxton Miller is a bigger threat because he can pass downfield. Devin Gardner is the answer against the buckeyes. He avoids pressure and finds open guys down the field. Denard gets pressure then throws the jumpball into triple coverage. I appreciate Denard but don't think we should risk losing to the buckeyes. Before Devin we went two games no td.

Without addressing each of your points one by one, I will just say two things.

One, Denard was critical in our win against OSU last year. Without him, we don't put up 40 points or win that game. OSU couldn't stop Denard last year any more than any other team could when he played well.

Two, Denard must pass well to be effective. As you said, if he is not passing well people stack the box the same way they would against any one dimensional team that cannot pass. I believe that Denard has not thrown well all season because of his elbow injury. He was throwing much better in the latter half of last season. And if Denard is not 100%, he should not play (at least as QB) against OSU. However, if by resting him he can get back to the point where he is an effective passer, he should play. OSU has had trouble with mobile QBs all year and couldn't stop Denard last year. IMO it all depends on how well Denard is throwing leading up to the game.

  • The big, physical receiver presence that Hemingway gave us last year is missing. With Hemingway Michigan came down with the jumballs. It won't work with dileo. If the Nebraska d can solve Denard the Ohio d will. With six points at halftime and zero touchdowns the Nebraska d solved it. At the line of scrimmage we are outnumbered. Lewan can only block one of 11.

Losing Hemingway hurt, but that doesn't entirely explain why Denard's passing has been so bad this year. Against Nebraska last year, who we beat 45-17, Hemingway caught two passes for 34 yards. Against OSU, who we beat 40-34, he caught two passes for 45 yards. Denard has just not thrown well this year. Some of his interceptions have been inexplicably thrown directly into the hands of defenders (Bama, AF, UMass, ND). I really think the elbow nerve issue has been affecting him all year. Maybe resting Denard will allow his elbow to heal up fully for the OSU game. Maybe it won't. But if he can't go, we are not better off. We will have to make due and rely even moreso on our defense. But we are not better off.

I agree as a Buckeye fan, I'd feel more comfortable facing Gardner than DRob....main reason is DRob can break any play and turn it into 6 points with his legs...Not that Gardner can't run, but not nearly as scary to defend as he doesn't have the "wiggle" DRob has to make guys miss...

AS far as a thrower, Gardner did look good against Minnesota, and may be a better downfield passer, but honestly I believe it would be easier to defend a Gardner led offense than a DRob led O....JMO

Kind of the same thing with Braxton and Guiton....Guiton makes faster reads on the pass plays, completes more passes to more receivers and can run...but I'd rather have Braxton in there for the fact he can break you down and take it to the house an any given play....Both DRob and Braxton make DC's nervous because you can hold them, contain them for 10 plays in a row then on that 11th play they're gone....

Umm, Braxton is completing 53% against Big Ten competition 7tds and 4 ints.

Denard is completing 52% against Big Ten competition with 3 tds and 1int.

I wouldnt say Braxton is a bigger threat. Also Denard avgs 1.6 yards more per carry than Braxton.

They're incredibly similar. If it weren't for several crazy ass interceptions Denard threw against ND and him getting knocked out against Nebraska, we probably would be 8-1 right now with our only loss to Alabama. And as Robo said, although Guiton looks like a better passer than Miller based on what I saw of him against Purdue, I would much rather face him than Miller. Not only is Miller a threat to take it to the house on any play, he can kill you by getting first downs with his feet even when you have him defended well. We had a hell of a time defending him last year and I don't see it being any different this year.

Hopefully Braxton's passing regresses two years in a row too.

Given the state of the OSU OL over the next two years, it's a real possibility. Anyone's passing will suffer when they aren't getting any time to throw.

They put up 34 last year on us and we were not as good of a defense at that time as we are now. I honestly don't see them scoring more than 21 pts, and if we can't score that many pts with Denard on that Defense then we don't deserve to win. I like our chances a lot in that game especially if the game is Ice Cold temperatures.

If you honestly think Braxton and the offense only will score 21 points your on crack. They will have scored 21 by half time.

More ignorance. Our oline is playing As good if not better than anyone right now. Keep dreaming folks. Urban is going to play hoak like a fiddle and not let up on the gas. 42-21 easy blowout win.

Do you honestly think the punishing running of Carlos Hyde would not be a difference maker in the "ice cold"?

Ohio State may not have the offense for the cold...but it has the players..(still have big O-Lineman and a large punishing back)

  • I think another thing that made us successful against osu last year was that Toussaint was playing extremely good football. As far as the running game went, osu's D couldn't key on Denard every play because Toussaint was running well. Last season, Denard and Toussaint both averaged over 6 yards a carry and combined for 290 yards on the ground.

We keep waiting for Fitz to finally have the day that gets him out of this funk, but it hasn't come in 9 weeks and I don't see it happening in the next 3. It's an O-line problem and a RB problem, IMO.

I think our D can keep us in the game, but we have GOT to get production from the backs to beat osu.

Your right, I mean Osu offense put a whoopin on that great Purdue defense. 22 in regulation and it took a frenzy to get that.

Carlos Hyde? Oh you mean the guy who gets all his yards in garbage time? Don't even act like Hyde is a threat. He's a threat on the 2 yd line, but nowhere else. Braxton will get his yards and big plays. Carlos Hyde will be completely shut down like everyone else in the Big 10 has been save Nebraska in the 4th quarter. Y'all talk like you have these great players, you have narrowly escaped defeat on several occasions this season. So don't pretend like your 10-0 team is actually dominant. You got one player and no defense, and we have one player and a top 10 defense....I'll take those odds everyday. It'll be just like last year but not as high of a score.

Just curious but what makes you think they will be so bad? Have you seen them play this year ? We have 4/5 on the Oline returning next year.

Exactly what others have said about Hyde....although he has 740 yards rushing this year in just 6.5-7 games....boy that must be a lot of 2 yd line runs...lol...
