Rankings Question for you guys

  • I've started helping out with rankings and me and Gerry Hamilton our national analyst started going through some Midwest kids today and updated some. I wanted to start out with the first one we did and get some feedback from you guys on where you would rank them. First kid was Sam Hubbard. A massive 6-foot-6, 225-pound safety prospect from Moeller HS in Cincy. We settled on a 90 overall grade (4-star) for Hubbard. I think he plays really aggressive and is excellent against the run, which would likely make him a LB at the next level. We also noticed on some of his interceptions that he looked like he had natural hands and ran pretty well. The reason we didn't rank him higher than a 90 is that some guys struggle with the transition to another position at the next level and he wasn't the most reactive kid we've seen. What do you guys think? I linked his profile and highlights below. I will put some more kids that we ranked in separate threads.

  • Just watched his film. I'd say he's a hybrid SS/LB. Kinda like USCe uses their "Spur" position. I think a 90 is deserving since he is very good against the run, has good not great speed, good hands, and his potential is off the chain. Definite solid 4 star Strong Safety. I agree with everything you got Clint. Thats why they pay you the big bucks.

  • Good analysis moon, thanks. I thought his hands looked pretty natural. Do you think there's a chance he could play TE?

I was thinking that too. He moves well laterally and after watching his lacrosse tape he can definitely run routes. Definitely an Aaron Hernandez type and that could be his calling especially in the pass happy CFB these days. If he adds some speed and keeps his weight down then I see him as a safety, if he adds weight then LB, but TE could get him some PT sooner maybe. I think he is very versatile and that depending on the team he goes to...especially with a team that is already got some depth at LB; he could def turn into a heck of a TE.

  • I go with an 88 for a S/LB type player. I think he could be a good college player but I don't see a first team all Big Ten or future All American when i watch his tape.

The TE question is interesting. I think his athleticism could translate better to the offensive side of the ball than it does on D.

  • After watching his short 6 minute highlight tape I think an 89-90 was the correct ranking. The biggest negative that I saw and as you said Clint does he have a position. To me SS is out of the question because of size and speed. Also, I am not 100% on his lateral quickness, were a few plays that it took him an extra step to change direction. Even with that I think he would be best as a TE because of his size, surprisingly good hands, and aggressiveness.

My lofty comparison would be to Zach Ertz. Who is not afraid to block, has great size and hands, but can get sloppy on his routes at times.

Great analysis. I agree with your points. Thanks!

  • Is he interested in Michigan or Texas A&M? This could go along way in my ranking of him.

I'm actually not sure if he has interest from either. He has some great offers though. Definitely a kid to keep an eye on.

Damn, I was gonna bump him up to a 97 if he was interested in A&M or Michigan. Now he just gets an 89.

  • Clint you have to give me your grading system first. Then I will let you know whether I think he is worthy of a 90 or not. I use a grading system for grading NFL prospects, but I imagine yours differs from mine. My 80 for an NFL prospect could easily equal a 90 for you guys and the scale that you use for College Prospects.

Good question. A five-star prospect is a kid we think could be drafted very high in the NFL. A four-star is a kid we think is going to be a very good player at the next level and is college-ready (doesn't need a red-shirt year). Three-stars means we think he can be a good player at the next level but could probably use a red-shirt year or two to develop.

Okay thanks for the reply. So what is the minimum standard grade for a 5 star? Is it 95? Likewise for a 4 star, and a three star?

    Yes.

Thanks Steve. Has he said he would rather play football if the right offer comes along? Read a small article on him a few weeks ago, but didn't really say if LAX was still an option or if it's football all the way now.

I haven't talked to him; I don't believe Michigan has shown much interest at this point. In most cases, football wins out depending on the level of offer.

not sure what the bottom cut off for 3* is, but 4* is 90+ and 5* is 98+

slightly off topic: if you guys are doing these evaluations, does that mean a rerank of the top 247 is coming soon? If so, when?

We'll as we are re-evaluating these kids, some could go into the Top247 and some could be moved out so we are kind of in the process of a re-rank right now. After we get through the whole country, then we'll announce that it's been rearranged. I'm not sure how long it will take. I feel like that was pretty confusing but I'm just getting into rankings now so I'm just learning how it all works.

  • My summary on Sam Hubbard

    Positives
    + Excellent Size
    + Good Hands
+ Good Athletic Ability for his size
+ Versatile, I could see him at TE, DE or even a Dion Jordan type of role as a LB with a lot of coverage responsibilities in the short to intermediate areas.
    + Good Ball Skills
    + Shows high hustle effort

    Negatives
    - Doesn't finish off tackles, not a striker, should be blowing kids up with his size.
    - Doesn't appear to have great instincts and this lead him to initially take a lot of false steps
    - Would need to add more functional strength for on the field.
    - Is a little bit stiff, and a high cut athlete.

Summary- I think he is an interesting prospect, and he has unique athletic ability for his size. If I was a coach I would consider him an athlete and try him at OLB first in a Dion Jordan role, If that move didn't work I would then consider having him play TE. DE is also a possibility. Overall I give him high marks for his combination of size/athletic ability, but low marks for his instincts. I would rank him as a lower to mid 4 star prospect.

Edit: Now that I see the platform for what star ranking equals grade wise. I would give him a final grade of 90, so I'm actually in full agreement with Clint. I thought for sure I was going to be off of his mark by at least 7 points, because I was thinking 4 star would be in the 80-94 range. Now that I see the min for a 4 star is a 90 I agree completely with that ranking.
