Ranking College Football Jobs

  • I think the criticism of the Michigan job is valid; I would still have them higher than 7th though...just not sure how much higher.

  • Actually, I personally think that ranking is about right. But I disagree with their criticism.

Sure, the culture is important, but that is not why RichRod lost or even struggled. If a coach came to Ohio State, and said the Michigan rivalry was just 'one of many' how would that go over in Columbus?

You have to understand the goals of the school. For example, if you went to Texas and said "our only goal is to win Big 12 championships!" how would that go over?

That's precisely a large part of why Rich Rod struggled. Perhaps we're splitting hairs over how you're defining culture, but not being aware of the significance of the #1 jersey, not embracing a nigh fanatic bent towards Ohio State - and some *can* argue that he should have been educated about those -, that's part of "culture", no? Being a lot more transparent with the media than previous regimes, being more of a "homesy" individual - these are some of the reasons that Desmond opined Rodriguez wasn't a good "fit". There are also other...social expectations that come part and parcel with the head coaching position that...I'm not sure he...embraced. Just who he is.

At any rate, not trying to reopen that can of worms, but I firmly believe that culture played a huge role in why he struggled. Certain comments about rivalries will reflect negatively, and that engenders additional pressure/lessens margin for error.

Agree. The same criticism can be laid on Alabama, as seen by their erratic late 90s and 2000s, they just don't care if you win honestly or not. That and the academics are the different between the two, IMO.

  • is it harder to get into Notre Dame than it is to Michigan?

  • lofl at "With the possible exception of Notre Dame, no school has more tradition than Alabama." They didn't even have a Heisman winner until a couple years ago. I'm thinking the all-time leaders in wins and win % has something to say about this...

I'll put Michigan 4th behind Texas, Florida and USC

  • The top 7 or so are all arguable as #'s 1-7. Every one of those schools has tradition, money, recruiting pull, etc.

What always frustrates me with "rankings" is that a lot of things should be ranked in tiers, like head coaching jobs. There are certain teams that are "Tier 1" and ranking them within that tier is essentially nitpicking/opinion.

If they're not counting sanctions, I would put Penn State higher, but maybe that's just my bias. Tradition, fertile recruiting grounds, essentially the only top school local to the northeast, money, rabid fanbase. Don't feel like their "Con" is that significant.

Without all the issues you all have gone through, I would have put you guys higher. I would say maybe 10-12 but that is nit-picking a bit.
