  • I think the biggest coup for UM was just getting him on campus for an unofficial. He is surely to meet some commits and get some digits and be able to build a more personable relationship with the staff. There are also a few things worth noting with Mathis. First off, he has a long ways to go in the classroom. The good news is he is seemingly working on it and doing better but the bad news is one 7 v. 7 coach said ASU wouldn't be able to get him in without drastic improvement. Also, he is favor impressionable. He committed to UW his junior year only to back off later, raved about SC's junior day and went back down to talk to academic advisors about what he would have to do to qualify. Now this- actually think he may have committed to Michigan had he never committed to UW. With him, it sounds like he will take officials to Nebraska, Michigan, Ohio state maybe (cousin sua cravens and him said they would take visits together), and I would imagine one more OOS school (Oregon likely if they offer). While cravens is his cousin tahaan goodman is his best friend and it seems they might be just as likely of a package as cravens/mathis. I don't think Nebraska has much of a chance for either and Michigan has the academic element that Ohio State can't pitch for Cravens (smart enough to possibly be admitted to Stanford). ucla has a great r ecruiting staff and Mathis committed to their DB coach Martin when he was at UW. They want him really, really bad as the other big time DE in California Fitts is a huge SC lean. In the end, I think it is Michigan vs. SC and my own bias along with the hometown tug will be tough to best. UM getting an OOS on an unofficial is huge though. McKnight, Agholor, Leonard Williams, and Kyle Prater were OOS we got that we probably wouldn't have if not for their spring/Sumer visits. They built friendships with players and fellow recruits and got campus tours out of the way before their officials. USC is in good shape with cravens, Hutchings, and Willis all who talk to Mathis. Of course, that could benefit UM too with the rave reviews he is giving you guys. Hawkins also talks to him everyday about getting work done in the classroom. Anyways, thats my off the wall impression based on intel from the west coach. Respect your program, your posters are respectful, and would much rather have him in Ann Arbor than for urban sliar.

  • That wouldn't surprise me at all, also wouldn't surprise me if he made a fall commitment only to change it again before signing day. Good kid, but definitely a flavor of the moment kind of guy. Was rocking a Nebraska hat around for a few weeks when they offered and mods have stated that he has talked to the SC coaches about committing. FWIW, classes he is taking is based on what SC needs him to take to get him into school. Know all schools have different quarky things but I'm sure Hoke and Co. have seen his transcript and must have a good idea that if he improves enough he will get into Michigan. He is definitely not 100% until at least January IMO, maybe signing day. If he committed to SC, I think most of us realized we would still have to take it with a grain of salt..

    Also, you guys feeling pretty good about Isaac? Sounds like you should, heard he is close to 50/50 between the two but dad is pushing Michigan. Also, any idea on his decision time frame?

  • I dont think Mathis commits if he visits again tomorrow...he knows that additional visits to other schools under Hoke will not be permitted, and he still plans additional visits

  • Grades are a legit concern, doubt the coaches will pursue a commitment until they're taken care of.

    Curious as to how much room SC has in their class for Mathis and where he is on their want list? Can USC only take 15 commits this year? Any insight here is appreciated.

  • Thank you for the insight, especially on what you guys are hearing on Isaac. If he sticks to a summer decision and does not bring his Mom out to California, I am very confident it is Michigan.

  • In regards to Isaac, that is precisely what we hear. Getting mom out is a must for SC to have a shot, so if mom doesn't come out SC doesn't have a chance. If he liked SC more, it stills seems like there needs to be equilibrium with mom and dad, and dad seems to favor staying in the midwest (UM/ND).
    USC has 18 schollies because there are 3 left over from last years class. There is a possibility that we take Max Garcia, the Maryland transfer, but he is from Atlanta and also considering UGA and UF. Tee Shepard is another possibility if he gets everything squared away and both of those would count towards last year and leave us with 16. But, I think odds are better neither comes and we still have 18, 3 of which must be EE's. Max Browne and Chris Hawkins are both going to be early enrollees and Kylie Fitts is trying to do so too. Remember, you can have guys come early in January and stil count towards class of '13. With the limited schollies it is much easier to see who the coaches favor and who they really want. IMO, this is the class USC would like to pull if they have 18
    5-6 DB's (6 if they hit on Hargreaves or all 3 safeties mentioned below IMO)
    4-5 DL (5 if there is a 5th elite guy)
    1 WR (want size)
    1-2 OL (need a tackle)
    1 QB
    2 RB's
    1-2 LB's (again only 2 if they hit on a big time MLB, have depth here)
    Maybe 1 leftover for best available
    1. Kenny Bigelow DT, USC commit
    2. Max Browne QB, USC commit
    3. Chris Hawkins CB, USC commit
    4. Priest Willis CB/S
    5. S'ua Cravens- USC leads big and he grew up a USC fan. Odd site note, he is cousins with Brynn Cameron, the chick Leinart knocked up haha. However, like with Mathis, that doesn't mean much. I expect him to be wowed by OSU, UM, and Nebraska, but I think most involved in LA recruiting would be surprised if he didn't go to SC. UCLA will probably hang around as well because his best friend signed in their class last year and his HS coach is a Bruin. With Mathis loving UM so much and no OSU offer that only helps Hoke and Co. IMO, academics matter to Cravens so not buying Nebraska

    17. Daniels/Steven Mitchell WR, I think SC gets either one if they offer this summer, Mitchell for sure. FWIW, USC mod on another site said Daniels highlight tape is why you watch full game tape. Runs bad routes, not the best hands, etc.
    18. 3rd RB, MLB, or 5th DL
    DL, RB, and DB's are the focus for this class
    Lastly, it's early but how you guys feeling about the Bama game? It looks like you might still be a year or so away in the trenches which makes Bama even tougher but I can't wait for that game. Should be stellar!

  • Why would USC take 18? That would leave them a max of 15 next year. I would take 17 for a little more wiggle room in the next class.

  • They won't reach to fill out the class, just like this year. They could have offered some guys late but Kiffin is not going after projects with the limited numbers. Also, they have 14 seniors this year and you add a few transfers and a few guys leaving early for the draft and you are at 18. If they bring in 18 they have a ver. y good chance at still having 75 going into the final year of limited schollies. They have 13 juniors but it is likely a few will depart early, most notably Woods. That would allow them to likely bring in 15 in the final year of sanctions without playing below 75. USC fans have done the math at nausium and if SC stays at 75 we should be just fine (2001 miami albeit most talented team ever had 71 scholarship players and 2005 USC was at 76). This is also why Ohio State's penalty is a joke as they will hardly, I mean hardly feel their reductions.

    That is what I heard. Cravens is such a monster, he could play LB. That said, I think he prefers Safety...which is one reason other teams have a shot at him.

  • Redfield is the best pure safety prospect out of the bunch IMO. Cravens is a very good safety prospect but he could also play LB, WR, and probably TB at a very high level in college. I think if they can land the 3 big ones from CA, that SC will let Cravens, Redfield, and Goodman duke it out. USC will likely start two senior safeties in '13 then two of those 3 would likely be starters. If Goodman and Redfield are ready maybe they move Cravens down to LB, but then again that position might have the most depth on the team going forward.
