QB depth

  • Hey guys. I was looking at the U of M QB's recruited since Robinson and it looked to me like your coaches have not recruited many. How does your QB depth chart look? Are you guys happy with the guys you have behind Robinson?

    Thanks!

PS. I watched the replay of the night game vs Notre Dame that you played last year. By far the most exciting finish I have seen in years.

These are the guys I could see taking the field for us over the coming years. I'd be happy with any of those guys under center.

*In 2013, I'm rooting for Bellomy to be good enough to beat out Gardner so Garner can get moved to one of the receiver positions. Honestly, I'd love to see that this Fall with Denard under center. How awesome would it be if Denard and Devin were both on the field 100% of the time!

    2012
    Denard Robinson - Senior
    Devin Gardner - Junior
    Russell Bellomy - Sophomore

    2013
    Devin Gardner - Senior
    Russell Bellomy - Junior
    Shane Morris - Freshman

    2014
    Russell Bellomy - Senior
Shane Morris - Sophomore or Redshirt Freshman
    Kizer/Stewart/someone else - Freshman

  • Devin Gardner will probably take over in 2013, but Russell Bellomy could push him hard for playing time. Gardner's an incredible athlete, but has problems throwing consistently. He hasn't gotten a lot of actual game experience thanks to Denard, so we'll see - he's another holdover from RichRod's recruiting. He'd be great in a spread, but it's a little harder transitioning to pro-style.

Russell Bellomy doesn't have the strongest arm, but he's accurate, and he's very intelligent. He'd be a good game manager at the very least. He'll probably compete with Shane Morris for the starting spot in 2014, unless Gardner is granted a medical redshirt by the NCAA.

Shane Morris is one of the best, if not the best QB recruit in 2013. He'll be pushing Bellomy for time in 2014 as either a sophomore or a redshirt freshman. If Bellomy performs acceptably this year, Shane probably gets a redshirt.

2014 QBs - while we don't know who'll end up signing, word is that the coaches want 2 QBs in the 2014 class to build up some depth. RichRod left us a bit thin by not recruiting anyone after Bellomy, and Hoke didn't take a QB in the 2012 class (mostly because Morris was already committed in May 2011).

  • One thing to remember is that Gardner could still get his medical redshirt which would put him at a RS Junior next year.

They will only take 1 QB in the 14 class not 2.

I think the coaches will end up taking 2. Depth is terrible.

Depth isn't great, but I wouldn't call it terrible. We'll always have at least three scholarship guys, and you really only want four. And it's going to be hard enough to get one top 2014 guy to sign on with Shane in the class in front of him. Taking two would be just begging for future transfers and make it harder to sell in 2015. Plus, if Gardner gets his redshirt, we'd have four guys in 2014 anyway.

I think you just try to get one top QB every year and you'll usually have four on the roster at a given time. If injuries or transfers happen, you adjust accordingly, but for now just one each year is a good steady way to go about it.

I'm sorry, I didn't realize you were one of the UM coaches. My apologies.

But really, I've read a lot of things that talk about wanting two QBs. If they only take one, awesome, if they take two, they take two. If you can show me something where the coaches said that they're only taking one, I'd appreciate it.

Never said I was a coach or anything, but I've heard they only plan on taking 1 QB on a Michigan recruiting facebook page from a recruiting analyst.

Well, since the coaches haven't even offered a QB yet, I doubt they know how many QBs they will take in the 2014 cycle.

It's going to be very hard to land two quality QBs in 2014. If we were to land somebody like Chance Stewart, plus have Morris in the fold and Bellamy with a bunch of eligibility, depth chart will be scary. I know top prospects don't care about competition, but it's not very often two top QBs commit to the same school, especially with a 5*-type talent in Shane a year ahead of them.

I think the coaches could sell a redshirt pretty well. If the player comes in knowing that they've got a shot at 2 years of separation with Shane, and we can still get some top 2014 OLs, I think we've got a great shot at pulling some top QB talent.

I agree with 1 top kid. Was saying I think it would be hard to land 2 top QBs and sell them both on redshirting. If that were to happen, the one who fell on the depth chart would be high risk of transferring.

probably will be difficult but it would be nice to have 4 scholarship qb's

I always get a laugh out of projecting depth. As amazing as we all think Shane Morris is and going to be there is no guarantee he will ever start at QB for us. If Belllamy is better then Shane next year and has a good year you would expect him to continue to start. Then if you have a kid like Kizer come in and be better then Shane we may never have him start. It sounds far fetched but anything can happen.

    GoBlue81

  • Bellomy will start. Gardner has had his chance and has been too inconsistent. If you think he's starting, look at the coaches decision to move him to WR.

  • I wouldn't mind DG moving to WR permanently, and being Bellomy's backup. They could still have QB packages for him

I just think it leaves us so thin on the depth chart. We'd only have two scholarship QBs. If we had gotten a QB in 2012, I'd be all for it, but as it is, it's just too risky.

that's kind of the point. One QB takes the lead and the other, who is presumably not as good, transfers and opens up another spot for you. That way you don't have to worry about which is the better prospect and which one to offer, they figure it out in competition during practice.

Devin isn't making the permanent move to WR, at least not yet. The coaches just know that he is a great athlete and are looking for ways to get him on the field.

Agreed, i think Devins higher potential is at WR and we could use a playmaker with his size/speed/athleticism, Bellomy seems to be progressing nicely and I think he'll be a pretty good college qb

Yeah, and Bellamy has an advantage over Gardner in the QB competition...If Bellamy is the QB, then he can throw to Gardner. However, if Gardner is the QB, he's going to have a very tough time throwing it to himself.

So, the question isn't just who's better, Bellamy or Gardner? The real question is whether Gardner is so much better than Bellamy under center that we can justify losing him as a WR.

+1 absolutely, i think Bellomy is the straight up better qb but we also are hurting at wr and DG could provide an immediate upgrade. Bellomy to DG could be a real nice connection for us in 2013.
