Post-Game Thoughts: Northern Michigan

  • Obviously you can't tell much, as it's Northern Michigan, but the freshmen looked great. An 83-47 win is always welcome.

Without Burke and Horford, we played 13 players. Love having that amount of depth. We had 5 freshmen on the court at once. The defense looked incredible.

Standouts in my opinion were McGary, Albrecht, Stauskas, and Morgan.

    What'd you think?

I'd agree with you. Albrecht impressed me given his (lack of) rankings in high school. He's not the biggest or fastest, but it seems like he has good handles and can manage the offense, which will only be needed for around 10 minutes per game. I really like McGary's hustle. He's all over the floor and AT WORST will be an outstanding rebounder. And, of course, Stauskas is lights out. I thought TH3 was a standout as well. Very balanced game for him, and he was involved in the offense even when he wasn't scoring.

  • I LIKE SPIKE!

It will be amazing to have a point guard come off the bench and not be a total liability.

Hardaway had a weird game. Didn't shoot well, but he really shared the ball and ran the offense when Spike was off the court.

I think he's gonna give teams fits this year.

Exactly. It was good to see him stick with it the entire game rather than sulk around like last year when he didn't get off to a good start.

If he can learn to drive to the basket efficiently, he'll be a monster.

They played solid defense and you can see the potential on offense. Got a bit sloppy the last 5-7 min of the first half, but considering how deep they went into the bench that's understandable. Morgan played great and McGary and Bielfeldt looked solid too. It's going to be great to have Albrecht backing up Trey Burke, and Stauskus might be the best 3 point shooter we've had since Glen Rice. I was a little disappointed in GRIII. He's clearly athletic, but he's raw and needs a lot of work on defense. My two key takeaways: (1) it's exciting to see a Michigan team with some size that actually can rebound and (2) even if Burke leaves after this year, we might actually be better in 2013-14 if everyone else comes back. There is a ton of raw talent on this team.

  • I put this in the season thread,

I only watched the second half, but these freshmen looked good.

Robinson is a stud. Is going to be ok on the defensive end and a weapon in transition and on offense as a whole.

Spike can hit the open 3, and looks comfortable running the offense/distributing the ball. Hopefully he has enough speed to give Burke a break in B1G play.

Stauskus is lights out shooting. This offense is made for him. He had some nice passes also.

McGary is a beast. Leaves his feet a little to quick right now, but the kid will be a + when on the court.

Beilfeldt will be ok. Isn't a plus physically, but he will have a solid role.

Levert needs to Redshirt. You can see he has skills, but he won't needs some meat on those bones to make it through B1G play.

  • Our coach knows how to evaluate talent! Spike the no star with basically no offers is gonna be a really good player for us who knows his role. Love it!

  • A couple questions. Anyone know if or where i could possibly find a replay of this game? Also, I see a lot of people commenting on Spike. From the comments the first name that comes to mind to me is Steve Nash. Not the biggest, or most athletically gifted player but just knows how to play. Does Spike remind anyone of a poor mans Steve Nash?

BTN should have a replay today. I was going to check and record it before leaving for work.

    Thanks for the info.

I wasn't able to watch the game but it seems like the freshman had a good game from the stats. Spike's stats look particularly impressive.
