Cannot find out much about his prowess as a recruiter, other than to say he was the recruiter this year who landed the highest ranked recruit for NIU 3 Star CB Aregeros Turner who had several D1 offers including Illinois, Kentucky, Purdue, Tennessee, and Washington.

    His coaching experience:

2013 - Northern Illinois University, Assistant Coach (Running Backs)
2012 - University of Cincinnati, Assistant Coach (Running Backs)
2011 - University of Michigan, Graduate Assistant (Offensive Line)
2010 - University of Cincinnati, Defensive Assistant

Huskies Add Roy Manning As Running Backs Coach - Northern Illinois Official Athletic Site

Roy Manning, a former University of Michigan linebacker who spent three seasons in the National Football League and has coached at both Michigan and the University of Cincinnati, has joined the Northern Illinois football staff as running backs coach, NIU head coach Rod Carey announced Wednesday.

Turner was a player Michigan had interest in as well; solid cornerback prospect.

  • Thanks for the info squid. I think he would be a great pick-up based off his profile. Very young and up incoming coach.

    Bring him on board Hoke!

  • Looking at NIU recruiting profile the essentially recruit midwest including MO, and FL. I also think having a young, energetic, Black, coach with current NFL experience is a huge plus.

    SKWDCOP

  • I'd love to add Manning back onto the staff his time as a full-time coach. I was always sad when he left his role as GA originally.

On the surface he could add a lot of what we lost with Montgomery. A guy who has played football in the B1G, who is a young energetic coach, and considering he played in the NFL and his demeanor, I bet you the guy can recruit.

Also the colour of his skin will pay dividends also. (don't kill me for saying that)

If people cannot see that as a value, they are fooling themselves..especially when many athletes are black, there is a comfort with that from the families who are black. To think else-wise or bash that is foolish.

I have to imagine Freddie Jack is gonna retire when Jeremy graduates, or a short time after.

Maybe he'll have interest coming back to Michigan for RB coach because there is no way Doug Marrone will last more than a couple years at Buffalo.

That's what I figure, so the whole staff will be canned when a new coach comes in. lol

Also, I wouldn't be surprised to see Roy Manning take over the RB position whenever FJ retires as well.

If it is Roy and he comes in at LB one would assume Coach Smith would head toward the Dline

    Year Team Position
    2011- Michigan Linebackers Coach
2009-10 San Diego State Assistant Coach, Linebackers
    2003-08 Ball State Def. Coordinator/Linebackers
    2001-02 Indiana State Def. Coordinator/Def. Line/Special Teams/ILBs
    1988-00 Indiana State Defensive Line/Special Teams/Inside Linebackers
1986-87 Rose Hulman (Ind.) (Div. III) Assistant Coach
    1982-85 Bowling Green Assistant Coach
1979-81 Defiance HS (Ohio) Wide Receivers/Secondary

  • I think they might bring in Manning to coach OLB's a position Mattison was coaching last year then it's possible that they could then flip Manning to rb's coach once FJ retires .. I think Manning likes coaching the offensive side of the ball he helped with the OL when he was a Grad Assistant at UM and relayed plays from the booth to the Qb's .. This year there will be a big change in recruiting come Aug 1 when Grad assistants will be allowed to recruit and our recruiting director Chris Singletary will be allowed to make phone calls to recruits also all the coaches will be allowed on the road at the same time no more tag team rule ( 6 on 3 off ) .. Michigan has a really great group of grad assistants Adam Stenivech is pretty much taken over doing what manning did .. Kevin Koger is coming in as a offensive grad assistant i think . Ernie Lawson also is working with the DL there is one open spot on the defensive side

  • I know I commented that ignoring race as a factor in recruiting would be unrealistic, but it occurred to me that all of our current 2014 commits (who I seem to remember reading were all recruited at least in part by Montgomery) are non-African American. I'm not saying that this proves anything one way or another, but I just thought it was interesting.

Defintely not saying it is the end-all. i would also argue that youth (a younger coach) also brings a fire, and relate-able aspect to you kids. A perfect example is that in the Navy we were sending old goats Chiefs and first Class to be recruiter, but were failing to make goal - when we opened up to younger sailors to be recruiter we had more success - simply put a HS recruit has more in common and comfort with Manning/Montgomery at 30ish than most of our coaches 40 to 60ish. Also he has not been that long out the league.
