Possible Backfield 2013

  • Who do you guys think will be our starting RB? Drake Johnson has gotten some high praise. We don't know how Fitz will recover, gotta think if he's healthy....that he has the job. They say good things about Rawls, but he never gets featured even when Fitz is out. And I just don't see Justice Hayes as anything more than a 3rd down back. Deveon Smith has the size and power, but lacks the speed and will be a freshman. If Green commits, do you think he's our front runner for the starting spot after spring ball?

If Green commits and is a fast and built as everyone says he is, then I believe that he would get the starting job. It all depends though with spring ball and everything but you would think that the coaches are looking that Green and Smith is a great duo that would help in the backfield. Thats my opinion.

Ya I wanna see how Drake Johnson does in Spring ball. All the coaches were raving about him at the end of the year. If he bulked up and worked on his power game....with his elite speed; he would be a great RB IMO.

  • Everyone will get a chance, especially if Fitz is still hurt in practice. I think Fitz is our guy again though. Johnson, Smith, and Green if he comes will all have a good shot though

Fitz and Green. Smith will be used on special teams and worked slowly into the RB spot. Smith takes over when Green moves into Fitz's role for 2014.

  • As a bucks fan it pains me to see green headed your way. Ha. Kids a player! Rb is the one position where fr can step in right away....If...they can pick up the blocking schemes. Fitz is a nice back, and he has the exp, but blocking schemes is the key. If hes at least as good as fitz in that area i could see green starting day one. Hes the backup at worst imo. Huge pickup for you guys

The 2011 Fitz would probably start...the 2012 Fitz regressed in mho and would be easy for Johnson, Smith or Green to outperform. By the time we get to the Big Ten season Green's upside would probably propel him to the starter. Ducks is right though...everyone will get a chance. I have no doubt that we will be much better at that position than we were in 2012.

  • As long as the OL is better than the RB position will be better.

  • I'm going out on a limb and saying Hayes. I think he comes in near 200 and can handle a 150-200 carry load.

Hayes is a guy that, if not going to play RB, they need to move to WR. He has the skills to play either.

  • I don't see Justice Hayes getting many reps as the #1 back if any.......Ever. I'm sure he's a great kid, but he's not a Big 10 back. I like him in the slot tho.

Add a few pounds and Hayes has much more upside than Fitz ever did. He was a pretty good recruit out of HS.

In fact memories are always short in recruiting. Hayes was our top ranked recruit in 2011. Just ahead of Countess and much higher than Rawles... and much higher than Smith. Recruiting rankings aren't the final answer of course. What matters is how they do in the game. And Hayes, with his limited action, looked as good or better than all of them this year. Lets see how he does with more PT.

I see four good RBs competing to start next year: Fitz, Hayes, Johnson, and Green (with obvious caveat). I see Smith (they have to redshirt one frosh) redshirting.

  • We will see a combination of Hayes, Green, and Fitz imo.

I have a gut feeling Johnson is going to be very very good .

He's got to come here first, nothing is set in stone.

This, although more Johnson than Hayes.

  • So if Green commits, does that mean we automatically red shirt Deveon Smith? Ideally you would like 1 of D. Smith and DG to red shirt, but what if they are the best two on the team with Fitz not being 100% and the rest all scrubs?

They won't be the best two on the team, but that doesn't mean that either will redshirt. Hayes, Rawls and Johnson have the whole offseason to improve. Injuries happen and so does attrition. I expect they'll redshirt Smith and play Green, but who knows.

I want to make it known that Steve Lorenz (Tremendous) is the reason my trial month became a permanent membership. Smart move 247.

Unless they're both so much better than any of the other guys, I can't see the coaches not redshirting at least one of them. I just can't see them both coming in and running so well and picking up the blocking schemes and protections so quickly that none of the other backs are worth playing as the backup/3rd down back. I just don't see any way in which one of them doesn't redshirt.
