These are interesting sanctions, and in my eyes are appropriate. The tragedy that occurred for that long needed addressed swiftly and severly. It is a shame that these players have to go through this, but even more of a shame that this was all covered up by PSU. My heart goes out to the victims, and I hope Sandusky gets his due in prison (if you know what I mean).
The possibility that UM takes any transfers is small. First, how many PSU players are going to want to step into a place like Michigan and have to compete with a high level of talent when they don't know the system. Sure, there are some players that are probably capable of competing for playing time, but that is a lot of work for a student athlete to take on. How would academic credits transfer? Is there time to find out before fall camp starts? These kids would be starting behind the eight ball on many fronts. If the scholarship limits have to be righted by next year, you can really only look at seniors or redshirt juniors as viable options, otherwise you disrupt your own scholarship allottment. Do you take a flyer on a kid (even if he is good) in hopes that he will adjust enough to contribute in a very short amount of time? I don't think so. The coaches know their scholarship situation and that's why they are presumably going to 24 spots in the '13 class, when only 20 schollies are available. They are expecting attrition, but 24 seems to be a solid number. Would they be willing to go to 25, or 26, which would mean running a kid or two off, or not offering a 5th year? Once again, I say no. These coaches preach integrity and commitment to their players, and I think they would show the same in return.
Yes, it is possible that it could happen, but it is not realistic. I don't blame anyone for thinking "how can UM benefit from this?" because that was one of my initial thoughts as well, but wanting it to happen is different from thinking it will. Sure, who wouldn't want somebody to come in and help the team? The question is how would our players receive this? Would it disrupt team chemistry, which Hoke and company are huge on? I personally think the risk far outweighs the reward.
