Penn State Punishment Thread

  • Yeah, this is the worst punishment since SMU. Not quite as bad as SMU, but a "newly-reformed" Death Penalty never seen since. Those are massive hits to Penn St. and there was reports that the B1G would release their punishment today.

If players want to transfer, do they count against the scholly limit?

I don't know, but they shouldn't if they aren't out to punish the players.

i dont know about the scholly limit. I just know that urban is already on the phone with dorian johnson.

  • They have to count against the scholly limit or your giving some schools a "competitive playing advantage " which is an NCAA infraction imo

I read a couple tweets that said it won't, I'm sure they will go more in depth about it soon.

  • NCAA has also waived the normal official visit limit and allowing the current PSU players to take as many officials as they need.

  • Well, that would be insane if it doesnt.

For example, OSU could take 10 PSU players, not have it count against their limit which is already lower because of penalties.

I'm sure they will have a limit on how many players each team can take in, something like 5-8.

Maybe but it still offsets the teams that have scholly limits already

I think they should limit the number of kids a team can take on but not count them against scholarship numbers. You can be pretty sure that a lot of kids have 2nd, 3rd and 4th picks of universities that are filled up.

  • psu fans on their board already giving up on psu and saying they're farewells and goodbyes to all the fans and saying they need to look for something else to do on Saturdays. i feel so bad for them. if this happened to michigan i will definitely have a heart attack. knowing that the school and football program that you love and cant wait for every saturday is completely finish is just to much. i dont blame them. they have nothing to play for anymore and are gonna have 3 win seasons for a long time

  • Official thing is they can go over for transfers this year, but have to get back down to 85 next season/end of the season. Not completely sure, but they will count eventually.

I would be surprised if Coach Hoke wasn't on the phone right now, along with every program in the country sending assistant coaches to PSU right now.

Agreed. And they had to go through the torture of having a lot of optimism return with BOB and this recruiting class.

60M, 10 years of probation, and vacated wins from 99-01 would have satisfied most people.

That is my understanding...which makes this really tough for those kids. And the seniors basically are going to lose this season no matter what at this point.

I think it's 10 initially, then a 65 scholarship limit (FCS standard I believe) and can only recruit 15 per year to keep it at that limit.

    Full list:

Fine of $60 million. Funds will establish endowment for victims of sexual abuse. Equivalent of one year's football revenue.

    Four-year postseason ban.

Scholarships reduced from 25 to 15 for four years.

Athletes will be permitted to transfer.

NCAA vacates all wins from 1998-2011.

Athletic program will serve five-year probationary period.

NCAA reserves right to initiate formal investigation to impose sanctions on individuals involved after criminal proceedings.

NCAA requiring Penn State to adopt to reforms outlined in Freeh report.

Penn State will be required to bolster compliance office.

NCAA will select independent athletics integrity monitor to report on progress Penn State is making on all provisions of agreement

why wouldn't it. they are already losing 60 million. loosing a season wouldn't be losing that much more. bad recruiting the next 5 years which will destroy the team for over 10 years. gonna take a long time to rebuild

It wouldn't have been a 1 season death penalty and then all is good. They would have hit them with similar stuff after that season. With a death penalty, just about every player is gone. They wouldn't have sat there and watched football on tv, they would have left to play the game. Now, most of the kids will stay and finish their career. They will have players leaving, but enough will stay.

How long do they have to get on another roster before camps start?

That's why we have both a criminal and civil justice system, and PSU and those responsible will be hurting a lot more from that than anything the NCAA dishes upon the football program. Its the fans, students and players that are gonna get hit hardest by whatever the NCAA does.

And that's kinda my point. If a "unique event" brings say 50 scolarships over 5 years and a multi-year bowl ban, how does a punishment like OSU or USC got even seem remotely appropriate?

Providing a player with illegal benefits that were probably still less than he deserved to be paid? 2 year bowl ban and 20 scholarships.

Providing a child molester with three decades of cover and bait for tricking and raping young boys: 5 year bowl ban and 50 scholarships.

There is nothing the NCAA can do here that doesn't really make things difficult from any sort of legitimacy standpoint. But when has the NCAA worried about that, I guess.

Do you think Penn States recruiting class in 1998 would have been as strong if they were to announce their assistant coach was raping little boys in the football shower? Not a chance, that is a competitive advantage, and extremely disgusting.

What do you think that information would have done to their brand moving forward?
This would have tarnished it and made it much harder to sustain excellence

They aren't going anywhere. You can't just become a fan of another program. They may become quiet about their fandom, but they will always be rooting for PSU.
