Penn State Punishment Thread

  • Alright, so I wanted to pose a bit of both a rhetorical and an honest question about the coming PSU punishment. I didn't want to put in a thread that it didn't really apply to, but it didn't deserve its own thread. So this is for any discussion related to the PSU sanctions.

    Now, my question:

Going forward, how does the NCAA treat corrupt programs that don't result in a national tragedy? Say a program pulls a trick like the Saints bounty system?

Since the entire Penn State is so beyond the pale of typical NCAA infractions, it doesn't seem like the NCAA can hand down a punishment that fits the crime. The other end of this, is how does the NCAA ever hand out punishments that are somewhat near this punishment.

By necessity, they are setting the bar for "HOLY CRAP WE HAVE TO BRING THE WRATH OF GOD DOWN" punishment really, really low.

To put it another way, if PSU had had their scandal before tatgate, what sort of punishment could have been handed to OSU that would have seemed appropriate? A sincere promise to look into ways of making sure kids pay for tattoos?

I don't know what is going to happen, but I am not going to work until I find out.

  • All I'm going to say is that NCAA doesn't belong here. The NCAA governs rules and regulations that is all. The judicial system is in place for crimes not Mark Emerett.

I agree. I feel like the NCAA is just trying to distract from the fact that it doesn't do its real job.

  • The NCAA, as I have long said, is a political institution only. They are reacting to political forces.

That said, I have never hated on PSU before...but they largely deserve what is coming. I just can't excuse they lying on this.

The long term repercussions are probably minimal. I bet the NCAA will just say this is a unique event.

That's why we have both a criminal and civil justice system, and PSU and those responsible will be hurting a lot more from that than anything the NCAA dishes upon the football program. Its the fans, students and players that are gonna get hit hardest by whatever the NCAA does.

And that's kinda my point. If a "unique event" brings say 50 scolarships over 5 years and a multi-year bowl ban, how does a punishment like OSU or USC got even seem remotely appropriate?

Providing a player with illegal benefits that were probably still less than he deserved to be paid? 2 year bowl ban and 20 scholarships.

Providing a child molester with three decades of cover and bait for tricking and raping young boys: 5 year bowl ban and 50 scholarships.

There is nothing the NCAA can do here that doesn't really make things difficult from any sort of legitimacy standpoint. But when has the NCAA worried about that, I guess.

  • I think I'm more curious to see what happens as a result of these sanctions than the effect of the actual sanctions themselves, if that makes any sense.

I want to see how the B1G reacts, I want to see how commits/current players react, and I want to see how this might change the landscape at the top of CFB.

Yeah. The current organization of the Big10 is going to take a hit.

And I remember thinking way back when, how choosing a divisional name with moral connotations like "Leaders" is sure to bite the B10 in the ass.

  • 4 year band. get ready for a blood bath. all psu players are transferring

    Wolverines89

  • Penn State football is over. 4 year bowl ban, reduce scholarships by 20 for the next 4 years, kids can transfer immediately, and they have to pay $60 million to the NCAA. Doesn't count the fact that the B1G will most likely kick them out of the conference.

This is the death penalty. The old 'death penalty' cannot happen anymore because of the monetary effects it would have on other teams and TV rights.

So what is the actualy scholly reduction? I've heard several different things.

why wouldn't it. they are already losing 60 million. loosing a season wouldn't be losing that much more. bad recruiting the next 5 years which will destroy the team for over 10 years. gonna take a long time to rebuild

I still think this is a joke. 20 scholarships and a 4 year bowl ban for 30 years of enabling and abetting a child rapist. I just don't see how this doesn't slide the punishment scale way down. If there were ironclad proof that Auburn paid 10 kids off of the NC team, how could you punish them?

And of course the Big10 gettin paid before the civil suits make their claims.

No, they can still shut down a football program. That would have been better for PSU.

if it was just the death penalty it would of been better, but hes saying he would have hit them with more penalties on top of the death penalty if he did a death penalty.

Yeah, I don't expect the University of Michigan to be benefitting from Penn State football any more, and from just about any team's standpoint, PSU is all but dead.

not only are they dead for couple years, they might be dead for life. they might not recover from this.

death penalty one year no football and lose about 60-80 million. they are already losing 60 million on top of the bowl bans and reduction which is gonna destroy the program for at least 10 years. one year loss of football is nothing. they can come back in 2013 and keep all their players with no reductions or bowl bans. this is 10 times worse than the death penalty.
