  • I have no problem with the NCAA stepping in and if LOIC is found, to hammer PSU.

Those in charge clearly covered up and/or turned a blind eye to children being sodomized. Now, while covering up those children being sodomized didn't give a direct advantage, it sure gave them indirect advantage due to the public outrage that followed.

I equate it to tat-gate. How did players currently on the team receiving tats and selling gold pants give an advantage on the field. Most people stated that it would influence recruiting. As shown last year with the decommits, knowing that children had their ass pounded in the same shower these recruits would use, it had an influence. There is also the fact that the coaches knew about the issues in both cases, and did nothing.

From the top down, this is LOIC in my eyes.

  • Anybody watch the Jay Paterno interview on ESPN? I watched a few minutes of it last night, I wanted punch the POS in the throat. He is more concerned about his dad's tarnished image than the little boys that were raped because of his dad's cowardness. Every excuse he makes for his dad being a POS is a slap in the face to the boys that were raped. I hope they take every penny from the Paterno estate.

I didn't watch it, but checked out the thread on tBB and it was brutal. Every PSU fan posting basically said "Jay needs to get off the TV he's making Penn State look horrible."

There is a time to defend your family, and there is a time to just keep your mouth shut.

It was sick to watch. All about the legacy, nothing about the true victims in the tragedy, from what I watched. And from hearing other people sound off, that was the case.

JayPa would be singing a different tune if it was his kid that was raped, as Paterno would have acted differently if Jay was one of the boys raped in the shower.

I can understand the natural familial instinct to defend his father, but he really just needed to STFU and go into seclusion. The entire Paterno family should only speak through a spokesman or lawyer for the foreseeable future. There was absolutely nothing Jay Paterno could have said short of admitting his father was a monster that would make the situation any better. I'm sure ESPN knew that they could just trot him out (like they did with Millen) and create even more controversy and viewership by getting CFB fans to react with vitriol.

As a lawyer though, it amazes me how incompetent the lawyers for Penn State, Sandusky, and the Paterno family have been. These lawyers a) should have been aware of the Clery Act and all over Penn State's lack of a compliance office, b) should never have allowed Sandusky's interview with Bob Costas, and c) should be the only public link between the Paterno family and the outside world. I know that ultimately, the client is king, but if these lawyers aren't all over this situation, they're not doing their jobs.

Did you really just compare this to tat-gate?... And not get criticized by anyone?..

I understand why you might want to take down PSU football, but I think if you read the report you might think otherwise. I read it and I personally think it's just incompetence by 4 leaders. The school deserves to be punished, not just football (by taking out football you'd take out a few other sports as well, and I'm not sure people want that). The DOE, civil suits, etc. will punish the university for years to come.

Still isn't in NCAA territory though. If it was they would have to go back and punish Colorado football and ND for there problems from the past 2 years. (Also, in LOIC, doesn't the university have to lose control? Unfortunately it seems that these 3-4 had complete control of the situation, which is why it is a legal matter.)

I suppose I can see it both ways. I would argue that they were protecting the university as a whole and their own reputations, rather than just the football program, but because of the prominence of the football program I can undertand your argument.

I guess it comes down to how the NCAA sees it, although, all things equal, I'd rather the NCAA just stay out of it. Don't need the keystone cops making a mockery of all of this.

I would disagree that they were protecting the university as a whole. If Paterno were the chess team coach instead of the football coach, there is absolutely no way that the president hesitates to send Sandusky to the cops. No way. This is one of the reasons why the NCAA must step in as well. It is almost impossible to separate the child rapes from the football program. If anything is lack of LOIC, this is it. I would rather *have 10 Miamis than 1 Penn State, and it is not even close to me.

Edit: Nevermind. Not interested in getting into it. Hopefully PSU can get their s*** together and fix this and we can see Michigan on the field for many years to come.

  • I'll be surprised if we ever see another UM vs PSU game in our lifetimes. The public outcry for punishment is getting louder, and PSU is still just sitting on their hands. If the NCAA doesn't act, I'll bet the BIG does. Urb better keep some schollies open for the PSU mass exodus part deux. Goodbye and good riddance.

  • I honestly wish that were the case, but I doubt it. The hardcore apologists drive me crazy. They want scientific proofs when there is already an abundance of evidence that most any civil court would obviously deem as proof enough.

People make mistakes, and all of us had made them. However, child rapes is maybe just above genocide in my book. There has to be swift and hard punishment, and Penn State is debating whether to keep a dumb statue up. Are you kidding me?

Part of me also wishes President Mary Sue Coleman, David Brandon and Brady Hoke issue statements condemning Penn State and asking for Penn State's removal from the Big Ten. It actually gets me annoyed that there hasn't been strong statements issued despite the fact that none of them have any affiliation with Penn State other than being employed by a school in the same conference. That's how disgusting this whole tragedy has been.

One thing is for sure is that I will never watch a Penn State game ever again whether or not they play Michigan.

This is actually not happening. It was a stupid report by ESPN. The Board heard the rumor and squashed it. They just said it hasn't been discussed and wouldnt be for a long time. Said they had more pressing matters to deal with in this situation... I also ask that you don't condemn all of us on the actions of a few. prejudice is not a pretty thing

I apologize if you took it that way. Do you want me to make you feel better and say "issue a strong statement against the culture that allowed child rapes to occur?" People call for the death penalty to programs like Miami or USC for transgressions that are frankly small potatoes compared to what happened at Penn State. Most of time, the mistakes of these programs are the result of a few coaches and boosters and not really university wide either. Yet, college football fans want heads when these violations occur. It would be odd to me if people did not think more strongly about Penn State's punishment.

I am sorry if that offends you. It may be something we just disagree on. I don't cast judgement on you or the students or faculty *personally. I think Penn State is still a fine school. However, to just say, "Well, *we'll let it pass since it only involved the four most powerful persons on campus" is not something I would not be willing to let slide.
