Our non conference schedule is as intriguing as any in the ...

  • country this year. Obviously the Bama game will gain national interest. Air Force comes in with the type of offense that we have struggled with over the years. UMass should be a bunny (if there is such a thing these days) then ND on the road for 4 wins over the Irish in a row. We will know a lot about team 133 by the time we play Purdue.

I say 3-1. What say you?

  • I know people have mentioned that Air Force game as a potential trap game. It'll be their Super Bowl, and no matter how the Wolverines did the previous week, it's tough to imagine Michigan being quite as fired up for the Air Force game. That being said, it'll be the home opener, and will either provide a chance to get back on the winning track or to prove that the win over Bama wasn't a fluke. Those are the types of games where coaches and senior leaders can really demonstrate their value.

  • And regarding the game in South Bend, I like the fact that Michigan will have already been battle-tested against an elite team away from home. The Irish are a little difficult to figure out, as it seems like every year is potentially their breakout year, but it hasn't quite happened yet (in terms of returning to national title contender status). You can bet they've got the Michigan game circled on their schedule.

  • Agree with Todd. Don't sleep on Air Force and ND won't be as tough because the team will of already played a true opponent; 3-1. The team has done extremely well out of conference the past few years.

  • ND schedule is crazy tough, and they will be lucky to win 6 games this year. Also, Air force will have new starters at QB and RB I believe, so they are going through some transition this year. The QB situation at ND will be interesting....they should have a potent run game again this year, and that will be the key to beating them is stop their running game.

RB's wise yes but they replace 4 out of 5 oline starters, and have a new oline coach.

confused 4 out of 5 what? We lost the RT and RG that's it. LT, LG, and C are all returning, thankfully. Cave our C is coming off a pretty bad injury.

Well in that case the 5 who started last year against Michigan, only Watt returns this year. Just like your entire secondary needs to be replaced, Floyd, etc.

I think we're going to be getting Air Force at the right time in the season. Their 2011 team was loaded with seniors that have now graduated which means they'll still be working in new personnel into a pretty tough offense to master. Looking at the roster from last year they lose their QB (and backup), RB, 2 starting WRs, TE (and backup), OC (and backup), RG, and RT on offense. So basically 1 RB (Wesley Cobb), the LT (Jason Kons), and LG (Jordan Eason) will be returning starters on offense.

Also, I know they need quickness on the line, but their OL according to the roster I'm looking at is tiny. Jason Kons (LT) is 6-4 255lbs, Jordan Easy (LG) is 6-3 255lbs, Nathan Badger (backup returning RG) is 6-2 250lbs, and Evan Kauffman (backup returning RT) is 6-4 255lbs. Those guys need to pull and move quickly, but seems like that is a matchup problem going against 300+lb DTs.

Edit: Just looked at their defense and it looks like it will be hit as bad as offense. They look to run a 3-4 base and had mostly senior guys starting. The DL loses all 3 starters and 5/6 in the listed 2-deep (Soph Daniel Vinson returning at DE, but he's listed at 6-3 235lbs so small for a 3-4 DE). Then 3/4 starting LBs are gone (4/8 in the 2-deep) and 3/4 starters in the secondary are gone as well. So they only look to be returning 1 DE, 1 LB, and 1 S from the starting 11 on defense. Inexperience does not work very well going against Denard Robinson.

Great breakdown of their defense here. Sounds like they'll be pretty young and inexperienced, and that's not a good combination to bring to the Big House and try to stop Michigan's offense.
