One final look at the 2012 class

Why wouldn't Morgan make a good MLB? He played it all through HS and will be one of the most experienced defensive players next year. Could be the QB of the defense.

Because he'll have played two full years at WILL in the Big Ten and it's not an easy transition. He doesn't really have the ideal body type for a MIKE. He's instinctive, which makes up for his lack of athleticism (kind of like Kovacs, but not as awesome).

Joe Bolden is much more of the "QB of the defense" type than Morgan. He calls plays, has the most ridiculous play recognition I've seen in a while from a Michigan LBer, and has awesome sideline to sideline agility. Read any scouting report of him and they endlessly praise his ability to recognize plays, audible the defense, and know where the ball will be. The UA Game coaches were drooling over him because of that.

I think the one thing we can all agree upon is that we should have some very good depth and position battles at the LB position for the foreseeable future.

Couldn't agree more. Add Gedeon and McCray into the mix, and I'm really excited about our LBs.

Especially when he says positions aren't dictated by weight and doesn't acknowledge that kids switch positions depending on the situation that arises.

Coming from the guy who said our offense line is getting smaller and more athletic under hoke!

lol finger(yes I know it was a typo). Yeah i could see that. The coaches seem to like Ringer at this point as well.

  • I can't wait for news to start coming out from fall camp. I am so interested to hear what the coaches have to say about Willie Henry. I can't believe that kid is up to 302 pounds already. I hope it is good weight.

  • The coaches love Mario, that is not in question... He is probably the best pass rusher on the team as well... He is a maniac off the edge and he could easily take Clarks spot and not give it back... Bolden is not the backup MIKE, Hawthorne will get the 2nd look if Demens is struggling or hurt... Williams will play if he has the gas tank.... Funchess will play as well... Ross will probably jump right in behind Morgan at the WILL... If Wilson can get the correct reads, I would think the coaches look at his playmaking ability and give him a look over Gordon

We cannot watch anything from the player run summer scrimmages. But word out is that he and Strobel look very very good. You and I both are excited

Separated your post into numbers so I could respond easier

    1) How do you know? The coaches haven't even seen him in a practice yet, so I think that's debatable.

    2) Very early to say that, as he has to put on weight and keep his outstanding speed/athleticism, which is not easy to do.

    3) Hawthorne is the backup WILL, not MIKE. Antonio Poole and Mike Jones are the other guys at MIKE, but Bolden beat him out (possibly due to Poole's injury)

    4) I could see this potentially happening, but he has to bulk up and grow a lot in terms of being able to diagnose plays. Everybody has been selling Gordon short, but I think he's gonna be a great player this year.

What's the word on Poole's injury? How bad is it?

I really hope Wilson gets a RS. I think he could really help our secondary in sure passing situations this year but man that kid got ran through a couple times by RBs in the spring game. And i agree about Gordon. I think he is going to be really good.

Yea, really surprised at Henry's weight, and couple that with how well it was said he did in the Ohio All Star game, Hoke may have found a gem.

Yeah, I remember several plays in Spring practice when Wilson was just incredibly out of place or missed tackles.

And I haven't heard too much about Poole (we never will know much with Hoke..), but I would guess that they just take his recovery slow and limit him(ish) in fall practice to make sure that he's all better before the season.

What is Hawthorne's weight? Still below 210? That size is a liability in the long run against B1G running teams.

  • Good stuff in here guys. Got me pumped for the season. Btw just imagine the linebacker talks we'll be having a year or two from now with 2013 in the fold. Without getting two ahead of ourselves with guys who haven't seen any college pt yet, it looks very good.

We saw Wilson getting trucked in the spring game. Some guys have the ability to play as freshman and some do not. While Wilson has superb coverage ability he will be a liability in run support. Correct reads have little to zero to do with anything. I like you, are high on Gordon this year.

  • This has been a great thread. It's rare to go 4 pages deep and not veer off topic. In addition, it's making me more than pumped for this season to start. Some opinions of mine on this class:

O - I'm most excited about Norfleet. I'm not sure he'll have a much of an impact on offense this season, but it would not surprise me either way. His three following years, I expect huge things out of him. I still can't get over his highlight tape. With a pro-style offense on the way, he's the epitome of a match-up problem for opposing defenses.

I expect Kalis to start in nearly/if not all games this year. He continues to get rave reviews and the fact that he's physically ready to start immediately is a phenomenal bonus. The sky is the limit for him on the line. I am also extremely high on our remaining linemen, but I don't expect to see them on the field much this year so I'll save some space in this post.

Jehu Chesson is my biggest "sleeper" in this class. I think he is extremely underrated as a 3* on this site. He has legitimate 4.4 speed (as in not 4.45), has good height, and a solid pair of hands. If he is able to run crisp routes, he is the type of receiver who can take any defensive lapse and turn it into a TD.

D - I'm most excited about Pipkins. IMO, you might as well call his floor a ceiling. He has a size/speed/agility combination you cannot teach, and an attitude that will not allow for failure. He will be great off the field too, which is something I value when looking at recruits more than most. T-Rich needs to bulk up ASAP. Until that happens he won't come close to seeing the field. 154 (right?) is tiny, plain and simple. Jarrod Wilson is going to be a ballhawking STUD. That is all I have to say about him. Bolden will be a reliable linebacker his first year or two and I see him as our leading tackler by the time he's an upperclassman. I like all of our DE's, but will withhold judgment at this point in time. I do not know how they will pan out and that is not meant to be negative.

All in all, this class could not be more perfect for filling the void RR left us regarding a pro-style attack/suffocating D. I'm amped.
