One final look at the 2012 class

Can we just use MLB and OLB terms? Always get confused with the names.

come on dude, you have to commit this to basic football knowledge. no gimmies cool
    Mike = Middle LB
Will = weakside LB - opposite of Sam
Sam = strongside LB - TE side

Clark was 228 and Beyer was 225 last year.

    Mario can play.

I think Clark was around 240 by the time he was actually getting PT. Plus, our depth and talent to get guys rushing the passer was nonexistent so the coaches were forced into that. I would like to see Mario redshirt but I agree if push comes to shove and the coaches aren't seeing what they like in a the pass rush he may get a look, but I think Strobel would be ahead of him

  • I'm liking a D.Gardner to Darboh connection!

Thanks, I don't go by that kind of stuff, I'm just basic as possible with my terms. Joe Bolden is most likely going to back up Desmond Morgan this year as there is no way he passes Kenny Demens unless Demens gets hurt. I just don't see Bolden getting time this year with the depth at LB.

  • I'd say at least one freshman LB see's meaningful PT especially since Poole went down and he was in the two deep.

Strobel is a SDE run stuffer. Rushing the passer is not his area of expertise. Also in spring the coaches critiqued Beyer saying he needs to work on his pass rush. That was one area Clark was ahead of him. Clark was our best pass rusher consistently during spring. He was also a 200 LB coming out of highschool. I think Mario O is more college ready then he was. I agree it would be nice to RS him but he will play out of necessity. UM simply has no other players at his postion on the current roster that can do what he can from an athletic standpoint.

Go watch Strobel's film right now and tell me you don't think he is a good pass rusher. Ojemudia is not big enough for college football right now, he will just get stood up on every play.

His film is impressive, but he's showing that he's a good pass-rusher against HS OLs and HS QBs. I just don't think he has the athleticism to step up at WDE right now. I'd much rather see Jake Ryan slide down and have Gordon start at SAM (strong-side LB).

Didn't Craig Roh play WDE last year?

The two deep during the spring game was:

SAM: Jake Ryan --- Cam Gordon
MIKE: Kenny Demens --- Joe Bolden
WILL: Desmond Morgan --- Brandin Hawthorne

Yes. He was the starter at WDE with Clark getting rotated in.

He has athleticism that a freshman Strobel doesn't have.

In terms of athleticism Strobel > Roh.

Season is completely different though, especially when Mattison starts getting creative with his packages.

    - Joe Bolden at MIKE is already in the two deep so he has a good chance of seeing the field.

    - One of the TEs will have to play, perhaps both. Devin Funchess could come in in passing situations and be a great receiving threat. AJ Williams is a mammoth at 6'6 280 already, so he has the size to play right away. I'd be shocked if he took a RS.

    - At least one WR will play as well, and we're lucky that both will probably be ready. Amara Darboh has the size at 6'4 218, and Chesson is beefier than he was and still reports a 4.4. With the weakness of our receiving corps, they'll probably see the field as well.

    - Dennis Norfleet could win one of the returning spots that are up for grabs after a pretty poor season at the position last year.

    - Kyle Kalis is the only OL that should be ready, and our depth is spotty at best so he'll definitely see the field if an injury occurs. He could even be in the mix for the starting LG spot over Burzynski/Mealer by mid-season.

    - Ondre Pipkins will have to play a serious amount of time, as we really only have him and Will Campbell at NT. I'm a little concerned about his weight (he's already the heaviest guy on the team), but as long as he can engulf double teams and keep his agility, he should be in the mix to step up if Campbell disappoints.

    - One of the 3/5-tech guys will get a good shot at getting some serious PT, especially considering how much Mattison loves rotating the DL. My order, in terms of likelihood to play, would be Chris Wormley, Tom Strobel, Matt Godin, Willie Henry.

    - Jarrod Wilson could easily make the two deep due to his EE, and I think he'll be there by the season's end.

As always, spot on with what you have Duck.

Edit: Mags with the extra 20 some pounds might see the field if crap hits the fan, as long as that is a good extra 20 pounds.

  • Great discussion here so far guys - it's finally time for football!

As I've said before, I really think Strobel is one of the best players in Michigan's 2012 class. I think he's extremely explosive, and as long as he stays healthy and grasps the system, I'd honestly be surprised if he doesn't crack the rotation this year.

If Clark is suspended and or off the team it is almost a given Mario O will see the field.

I see a Wormley or Strobel seeing the field there first.

I don't know about that. I think i have to agree with m&b21 here. Strobel reminds me of Roh so much off their high school tapes but Strobel appears to have better explosion and closing speed on ball carriers.

I'd love to be wrong. I hope Strobel pushes Beyer at WDE if Clark is gone, but I just personally don't see a WDE in Strobel. I see an awesome SDE. Just like I didn't see a WDE in Roh - I liked him more as a SDE which excites me about him being there this year.

Yeah, Strobel ultimately projects to be a SDE, but right now he can be used as a WDE until he gets his weight up.

Off of hs tapes roh is more athletic. Roh was labeled a WDE and weighted less the Strobel. Like I said before and duck said, I would rather see Jake come down and play Cam at SAM

I agree long term. I think in a pinch this year though if needed Strobel could be a solid solution at WDE for depth purposes.

I see what you are saying buth while they are almost interchangable, they are different also (MLB and WLB) and SLB is completely different.

Weak side = WLB = Will
    Midle = MLB = Mike
    Strong side =SLB = Sam

Yeah, SLB is practically a standing DE that is OK in coverage. Meant to stop the runner, but can cover the TE.

I am not sold on Cam. I disagree about Roh being more athletic than Strobel. The only thing i agree with here is that Roh weighed less than Strobel which really isn't a good argument considering Roh needed to add weight to play any of the DL positions anyway.
