Interesting that you have Taco as a strong side DE because from everything I have read is he is beating guys with speed and not strength.

When I get back to my comp I'll post my thoughts on both sides of the ball.

  • Just a note: This is excluding uncommitted 2013, 2014 and 2015 recruits for obvious reasons. Especially at WR or elite players like McDowell/Peppers/etc., they could easily be in the mix.

QB: Shane Morris --- Russell Bellomy
RB: DeVeon Smith --- Drake Johnson
FB: Sione Houma --- Wyatt Shallman
TE: Devin Funchess --- Jake Butt
TE: AJ Williams --- Khalid Hill
WR: Jehu Chesson --- Jaron Dukes
WR: Amara Darboh --- Csont'e York
Slot: Dennis Norfleet --- Justice Hayes
LT: Chris Fox --- Ben Braden
LG: Kyle Kalis --- Blake Bars
    C: Patrick Kugler --- ?
RG: David Dawson --- Kyle Bosch
RT: Erik Magnuson --- Logan Tuley-Tillman (with a lefty at QB, you want your usual LT to switch to RT to block the blindside)

SDE: Tom Strobel --- Matt Godin
DT: Chris Wormley --- Henry Poggi (remember that with Mattison, all of these and more will see significant PT - it doesn't really matter who starts)
NT: Ondre Pipkins --- Maurice Hurst, Jr.
WDE: Mario Ojemudia --- Taco Charlton
SAM: Mike McCray --- Royce Jenkins-Stone
MIKE: Joe Bolden --- Ben Gedeon
WILL: James Ross --- Kaleb Ringer
CB: Gareon Conley --- Terry Richardson
CB: Jourdan Lewis --- 2014 or uncommitted 2013 guy
S: Dymonte Thomas --- Allen Gant
S: Jarrod Wilson --- Jeremy Clark

Obviously things don't always work out, but based on recruiting hype, that is a natty right there.

Maybe Raymon Taylor or Holleman if they're still around in 2015. I'd also put Funchess at TE over Butt and make Darboh the other WR.

They both burned their RS so they'll be gone. The only CBs to choose from are Richardson, Lewis, and Conley (and Fuller/McQuay/Westphal of course)

  • The best part about all of this is that we will have talent and depth across the board on both sides of the ball no matter how you slice it. The TE, OL, DL, LB and DB groups will all be at least 2 deep in elite talent, and chances are the RB and WR groups will catch up with them soon enough. When was the last time we could say that? Even the '06 defense had depth issues that this team might not have to deal with.

I think I can say with some certainty that Gant will never start, or probably even play, cornerback.

  • I know our 2012 and 2013 recruiting classes have been amazing but most of you having no seniors and very few upperclassmen on the roster is ridiculous. 2011 was a solid enough class that hopefully a good number of them will be starting in 2015

The 2011 class graduates in 2014 unless they were redshirted. So your options from that class are

    Bellomy(QB)
    Hayes(RB)
    Bryant(OG)
    Miller(C)
    Heitzman(DE)
    Poole(LB)
    Tamana Carter(S)

Not saying you are wrong, and someone may prove me wrong, but I think technique is as much a barrier to transitioning between those spots as size. CHarlton would be switching from a 7-tech where he is alway rushing at the edge, to the 5-tech where he would be picking up the tackle and a lot of TE and FB.

I think, unless he gains upwards of 50lbs worth of good muscle, his speed and technique will keep him locked into that weakside spot. Plus, with Strobel, Godin, Wormley, and Poggi, SDE will be ably manned for the forseeable future.

3tech Henry Poggi SDE Chris Wormley

I think those two get switched around. From what I understand, Poggi is alot closer to his frame's max weight than Wormley.

    bkp1883

  • I would also like to finish out this string of posts by pointing out that, while this exercise is fun, it is a lot more fun to look at the last two OSU recruiting classes and fit them into some sort of reasonable depth chart. Their front five on offense and front seven on defense will both be holier than swiss cheese if Urban doesn't pull a rabit out of his hat.

You could be right but I just thought Poggi said he was recruited for the 3 tech spot. Who knows!

    HelloHeisman 21

  • I think out of the '13 class that Kugler and Bosch are most likely to get playing time right away because they seem technically sound and are physically mature. However. I also predict that by 2015 Fox, Dawson, and LTT will pushing for starting spots and playing time.
Also, the O-line depth should be looking rather nice by 2015; the coaches have said they want four more in the '14 class. I'm expecting those four to be of the same caliber as the guys from '12 and '13.

Yeah, I think that he is being recruited for the 3 tech. Basically, what I'm reading is that he is a tweener sort of like Van Bergen (that's the comparison made on mgoblog and it seems pretty accurate). It all depends on how he fills out and develops, I suppose.

There is no such thing as a tweener on defensive line! lol, its just means versatility! Poggi in my opinion will be able to move around a bit early and we shall see as his body develops. Same with wormley, he is a big (270) 5 tech now but will prob be able to movr around and play 3 tech. The coaches keep mentioning versatility so they can confuse the center and qb. I think next year this defense will be exactly like a pro defense with sliding and movement along the line before the snap

From what i have heard Poggi is a much better prospect at the 3 tech then at DE. I think Wormley will be a beast at DE.
