I think they'll come back after the sanctions with a fertile recruiting area, rich tradition, and great facilities. They're dead meat for the next decade though.

agree, It will likely take quite some time but they enough to work with to rebuild eventually.

I think it depends on how far they really fall. I agree this is unique, but we have seen other programs stay viable. If PSU turns into Indiana, then I totally agree. If they are still over 0.500 over the next few years, they may be able to sell the renewal of a great program.

Right now they're selling this and the NFL. I was not a fan of the BOB hire at first, but it's been a blessing they hired an NFL guy and some NFL guys on staff. As much as we all know BOB isn't responsible for Brady and the Patriots offense, kids still believe that sales pitch. He's selling that these guys know what it takes to get to the league, and it doesn't make a difference what happens in a bowl game.

With that, if they can keep the sales pitch up and the current class stays together (which is always going to be iffy up until they actually sign), they might be able to stay afloat through the sanctions. We won't have anything more than mediocre records, but that's probably all they need to do and then 8-10 years down the line, they can really start to get back into it. We'll see though, I'm just hoping it still feels fun the next few years.

That's kind of how we feel about Mattsion and his sales pich of coaching guys like Ed Reed and Ray Lewis.

Me too, I'm really hoping it doesn't take you guys too long to bounce back. I'm so sick of everyone baggin on the B1G and we need more than just Michigan and ohio to step up. It looked like PSU was gona be the next powerhouse before the sanctions came down. We need your program to become strong again, very impressive that BOB got half his recruiting class to confirm their commitments after the sanctions. With your great tradition and a talent laden state I do think there's a very good chance PSU can stay relevant during the sanctions and come back very strong within a couple years after they are lifted.

The transfers appear to be over with the 9 guys (we lost a WR after my original post) leaving. I say appear to be over because everyone else was at the first practice, so it would be strange for kids to leave after starting practices, but not the most shocking thing I guess. By my count we're at about 70 guys on scholarship for this season.

The offense is going to be hurting from losing Brown and Redd. I know you have the talent at receiver to overcome Brown's departure, but how about RB. Do you guys have anyone you would expect to be a solid producer?

Belton was getting very high praise well before Silas left. Not sure how closely you watched PSU towards the end of last year, but he was the kid who played option QB for us after Bradley took over. Supposedly he can make up for a decent chunk of what Silas did and should be better than Silas as a receiver (he was recruited to be a receiver). But his production in the run game will be a stiff downgrade I'd assume. He carried the ball like a loaf of bread at times last year, so hopefully he worked on that. Looked like a fumble waiting to happen. He was a true freshman and wasn't expected to be carrying much, so hopefully that was the focal point of the offseason for him.

The positive spin on Redd leaving is that with his departure, our true freshman 4 star running back decided to stay (he was going to Iowa if Redd stayed most likely). While it sucks to lose Silas, at least it's nice to have a kid for 4-5 years now with his departure, especially when the recruits we were going after for RB this year all dropped us after the sanctions.

O'Brien seems to be holding it together as well as can be expected.

Ironically, this whole ordeal has kinda made me into a Penn State fan. At the very least, I will be rooting for the program when it isn't playing Michigan.

I'd rather stay at PSU than lose my ACL/get arrested by being an Iowa running back.

BOB is saying all the right things and working his tail off, I can say that much. At this point, he's got a free pass as coach for a while because nobody expects us to win much, so he's got that going for him. Hopefully he can keep all the guys for next year (there's another free agency period with no transfer penalty from the end of this season to the beginning of next again, so any player pissed about PT or even a little frustrated has another chance to get out free) and keep the core of the recruiting class together (Hack, Breneman, Mahon, Sickels, Nelson and possibly Dorian Johnson although I think he goes). If so, we can at least maybe win a few games during the sanctions.

As for being a fan, it's appreciated. Most think PSU fans are some cult worshipping group of terrible people who only care about football. That's crap. Sure, we have a crazy fan base. Very similar to a Michigan, ND, OSU, Bama type fan base. Nobody in the world could convince me that if this had happened to a guy like Bear Bryant, the Alabama fan base wouldn't come off looking like the PSU fan base has the past year. We're passionate about football, just like most of America. We also don't think child abuse is ok in any way shape or form, just like every rational person in America. But since we still discuss footbal tool, "we don't get it." Apparently we should only be allowed to discuss child abuse and everything should be geared towards child abuse or we're terrible people.

Also, if you come to our board, don't be pissed when you see people on edge and wary of any comments. The amount of trolls coupled with the emotional nature of this has people beyond being on edge. They're very defensive and assume everyone from outside is coming to troll. So don't judge us by that. Judge us by visiting PSU one day and tailgating or inviting PSU people to tailgate with you in AA. Anonymous internet posters are always the worst of any group of people.

Haha, we had a nice thread about why going to Iowa as a RB is worse than the sanctions. Gotta feel for Iowa fans on that, just beyond unlucky.

  • shavisimo,

The fans, players, and current staff don't deserve any of this, really. I'm not going to comment on the penalties, but it is easy for me to sympathize.

And this is a cleansing event that boils a program down to those who are truly committed to the success of the group. Those are easy people to cheer for.

And it may be a Michigan slogan, but remember "Those who stay will be Champions".

We actually stole and amended that saying to "Those who stay may never be champions, but they will always be legends." thumbsup
