Official PSU transfer thread

  • The next two weeks should be hectic as PSU players look to play elsewhere around the country.

On the PSU board they are saying that per ESPN Jordan Hill is planning on staying at Penn State for his senior year.

  • I expect Penn state to be a competitive team this year. Then really drop off the next year

  • I was over on the psu board reading some of there post and there are two things that I think are wrong with there situation. 1. I think that teams that are on scholarship probation or bowl bans shouldn't be aloud to take any of the psu players. Ex: USC and Ohio. They screwed up and shouldnt be rewarded for it. I also think that other schools coaches being on their campus, outside there football weight room is just tasteless and disrespectful. If I was a player and believed in psu I would be hella pissed. Show some respect to the new coaching staff. Just my opinion.

  • So one guy to NCSU, one guy to Cal, one guy to USC, and one guy to LSU. Did I miss anyone? How many of those were starters?

I believe Justin Brown is looking into Oklahoma. He is their number 1 receiver, and they have lost Redd who was their number 1 back. If momentum gets going the offensive talent on this team could really bleed out, and they didn't have a whole lot to begin with.

Gonna have to rely on McGloin's arm (who should be in line for scholarship if he didn't already have one),

8 so far. NCSU kid was a walk-on second string safety; Cal was 2nd string LB (who rotated in frequenetly); USC was starting RB; LSU was 3rd string QB; Texas gets starting kicker/punter (same person); Illinois gets 4th string OL; FSU gets 4th string TE; Rutgers gets incoming freshman DT

Michigan gets one recruit and UNC another (sorta before sanctions though)

I know you are saying 4th string OL, but were there high expectations for him (Ryan Nowicki) eventually, or did he seem like a bust? I remember his recruitment being fairly odd because he was a 3* prospect on most sites, but some sites listed him with offers from PSU, USC, Michigan, etc, while others just listed PSU and Illinois?

What's your QB depth chart? McGloin and who before Bolden?

There was talk that Paul Jones had beaten out Bolden, moving him to #3 on the depth chart. Jones was a 4* in the same class as Bolden, but redshirted his freshman year so he's a RS SO now.

  • They are replacing 4 starters on the O line(graduation). Then they lose 65% of there offence with Redd transfering. There best WR is looking around and they have a starting QB with about 5 or 6 starts. Things do not look good at PSU this season. I have no problem with PSU and I hope they get get back to playing good football faster then people think.

Matt McGloin started most, if not all, of last season, and at worst split game time with Bolden in 2011. So he may not have 2 full years of starts, but he has 2 years of game experience and a lot of pass attempts (400+). I agree they'll struggle though, especially bringing in a new offense and almost all new coaches outside of Larry Johnson.

Injuries kept him way behind on the DC. He was also young. Could turn out to be a good prospect, but was 4th string this year.

Jones and McGloin beat out Bolden in spring practice. They said if Jones were a bit more consistent, he'd have taken the job. But alas, we're stuck with some more moxie.

The good news is that the offensive coaching staff went from putrid to at least respectable. It's no secret the Jay Paterno/Galen Hall co-offensive coordinator BS wasn't working. We had a game where we used all 3 timeouts on our first drive because the two couldn't decide quick enough together which play to call and relay it down to the field. We also only ran like 10 real plays. There will definitely be major growing pains, but the offense should be able to take steps forward slowly as we get better personel.

Unfortunately, who the hell knows when this better personel will come forth. We're just praying Hackenberg sticks, cause he could be the lynchpin to escaping the sanctions while we're still treading water and not completely devoid of talent. I could see most of the class looking elsewhere if Hack decommits, but maybe most staying if he stays.

  • I really do hope PSU the best. I think you guys will be as good as ever in 5 years. In the last 15+ years I have always thought Paterno was holding you guys back. Time will only tell but I say you'll be as good if not better than you were sooner than most people think. Look at USC

  • The free transfer rule is in place all the way up until the 2013 season so a lot more players likely transfer after this season ends. BOB has been real impressive in every interview I've seen. If none of this ever happened and was the PSU coach I could see State being able to hang with Michigan and OSU. As is I don't think any coach in America could salvage the mess he's been left with. By the time the sanctions are lifted PSU will just be looked at as a bottom feeder. The shine on BOB will have dimmed after getting kicked around by the BIG for half a decade. I'm not sure PSU ever comes back. They're a lot like UConn in basketball in that their entire tradition is tied to one coach. It isn't like other power programs. I do think Hackenburg sticks but they'll be hard pressed getting any bigtime recruits going forward.

I think they'll come back after the sanctions with a fertile recruiting area, rich tradition, and great facilities. They're dead meat for the next decade though.

  • I dunno. After a decade OSU, UM, and Pitt will have firmly established themselves as the colleges of choice for recruits in PA. In ten years highschool kids won't remember PSU for anything other then being a doormat. I don't think it'll be so easy to just pick right back up.

I think it depends on how far they really fall. I agree this is unique, but we have seen other programs stay viable. If PSU turns into Indiana, then I totally agree. If they are still over 0.500 over the next few years, they may be able to sell the renewal of a great program.
