Odaniel cancels visit

  • Looking at Ross and RJS last year, how important was it to have another LB in that mold which is what Dorian looks to be... I could be way off but James Ross just seems like an Ian Gold type LB that is going to be tough to keep off the field when he gets strong enough

O'Daniel - and it's not even close. All the more reason that this isn't making sense. Can't wait to see how this shakes out, but it's going to be a nail-biting wait.

I think it is more down to the position he plays and what we have/need. From what I have heard they play different positions and we are full at O'Daniel's position.

    This.

Gedeon is a fantastic LB prospect. If we get him, then O'Daniel's loss is not a big deal. But if we end up with only McCray, then we will be hurting a little down the road.

You are definitely entitled to your opinion. I have read multiple people's analysis, who happen to be coaches at the high school level (one being the same mentioned by jnewberg above), and they rate Gedeon higher than McCray and O'Daniel. They also rate him the most valuable out of all the prospects because he can play any of the 3 Lb spots whereas O'Daniel is much more suited as a WIlL

Man, that's pretty upsetting. Loved him and really loved the idea of getting a steady stream from Good Counsel. Oh well sigh

Took the words out of my mouth. Really really like him, bummer!

  • Well all I can say is we better get Cravens now that O'Daniel isn't coming. I'm really sour about this decision because I think his athletic ability at the position is unparalleled. I trust the coaches decision but I thought we could find a place for him. cry

  • It all sounds like a numbers game... Last years LB haul was very impressive... If Ross had not not gotten hurt at The Opening in Oregon and RJS had not been relied on so heavily at RB while playing almost every snap on both sides, they would have been "ranked" higher... Both Army All Americans who didn't look overwhelmed out there with the best...McCray got the first spot and the talk is 2 could be the number... Many holes to fill at RB and WR along with probably another DE and DT in this class... Current schollie number is 19 (Friday sounds like a couple more could open) and then we may see the staff change their tune if they can afford to take 4 LBs in '12 and then 3 more in '13.

I am fine with it. It shows that our coaches mean it when they say commit or we will take someone with equal talent that wants to commit. ODaniel had us as a leader, he could have set up a visit and committed anytime before this. He wanted to play the recruiting game and he was left on the outside looking in. And i am not being negative to the kid, he will land somewhere else and have a great career there.

This sends a message to Isaac, Smith, Treadwell... Commit when you have a chance or someone else will take your spot. Same thing happened to Pocic and McGovern. This will pay dividends with the 2014 and other future classes.

I can't wrap my head around Gedeon being a silent commit, but it sure does sound that way. No real reason to be a silent commit to this staff unless you want time to setup a press conference, which he hasn't done. He's not a silent commit if he schedules more visits, so what would he be waiting for?

BUT... telling kids you're full, especially from top schools like Good Counsel seems risky if you really aren't full. If they want 2 LBs and miss Gedeon and Levenberry only to start recruiting others later, that would look bad on their part.

Maybe they are just fine to take 1 LB this year (McCray) if they whiff on the other two, but would take the other two if they wanted to commit? So "full" in terms of they are recruiting the only two prospects they are willing to take?

From what I read somewhere, per recruiting rules, the media and the coaches can't reveal that a player committed until the player himself wishes to do so. That means if the player (and his family) keeps his mouth shut there's no way the world is ever going to know about it. Hence the 'silent commit'.

So there is still a scenario where Ben committed, told the coaches as much, and maybe even the likes of Tom VH, but for some reason didn't wish to reveal it yet.

No offense intended, but just because it's my first post here doesn't mean it's the first time I've ever studied football players and formed my own opinion. Based on the videos I've studied and the analysis I've read, I personally think O'Daniel is better. Not that big of a deal. This is all mute, since Dorian is no longer in the picture.

  • Let's say you're Ben Gedeon and you're about 95% sure you know Michigan is the place. But since it's early you just can't get that up to 100%, not just yet. And during the latest visit you become aware of the numbers crunch going on. What do you do?

You might want to commit to save a spot, and because you're almost sure. But you know there's still that 5% chance that your mind will change. So instead of committing, broadcasting it to the world and high-fiving all the members of #Team134, and possibly decommitting about a month later, you might want to keep it to yourself and think about it. And let the world know when you're sure about it.

    I'd totally understand this rationale.

    Oh, 100% agree.

But let us look at the same scenario from the coaches' standpoint. Gedeon is excited, but not on board. You are recruiting two of the top LB in O'Daniel and Levenberry. Do you tell O'Daniel not to show up for the visit, only based on Gedeon's excitement?

I think he is probably a silent commit. That is the only way this makes sense. Otherwise, you let people visit, and let the chips fall where they may.

After turning away not just Anzalone but also O'Daniel, that's exactly what I'm guessing.

  • I will say that it is fun not having to sort thru all the cry baby posts about this subject... Not to say that everyone here trusts Hoke 100% and won't accept any other way of thinking but not too many on here go crazy and freak out like they do on the other 2 sites....Lots of level headed posters... Only problem is, those cry babies will start to come over here when they see that this site is good

  • i think we hear one of two things shortly from gedeon, either he is a commit already and just hasnt announced it or the coaches told him we are full also.

Oh geez, I hope not. I understand people getting a little upset when it looks like their favorite recruit isn't going to Michigan. They want to vent a little. No big deal.

Agree that there seems to be a lot of good posters here. However, I would caution you on the "cry baby" rhetoric.. Just as annoying as the "cry babies" on the other sites are the people that incessantly call people "negative nancy" and "cry baby" for posting legitimately opposing views. We would all be better served by relaxing and doing more listening than complaining.

  • Man, wanted O'daniel a lot...Hope Gedeon is silent only to escape the media, would've really liked O'daniel in this class though, I don't think this helps our chances with Fuller either, but I trust in Hoke and Co!
