OT-ish: Dick Vitale

  • I've seen a lot of people who say they hate him as a commentator, and I can't understand why. He's a genuine guy and he brings a lot of enthusiasm to the commentary, which I love. What's not to like about Dickie V?

  • He's annoying as hell. After any play he yells "ARE YOU SERIOUS BABYY" and starts talking in a high pitch incomprehensible yell-ish thing for twenty seconds.

Plus, he was at an OSU-UM basketball game IN ANN ARBOR and talked incessantly about how awesome Urban Meyer is and how he would love to play for him.

  • I hate him. He repeats what he says constantly and has one of the most annoying voices I've ever heard.

  • I don't understand the hate, but I can definitely understand the disapproval. I agree that he's energetic/passionate, and in a way a staple for our generation of college hoops, but there are times where he sounds extremely uninformed and strays off topic for no good reason.

With that said, I don't like or hate any commentators. I rarely listen to them, unless something extremely stupid is said that my subconscious picks up. When my team is playing, I go tunnel vision on the graphics and my thoughts. Commentators matter more for games I don't have a hat in, which I don't usually watch in the first place. By the way, this point is null and void the second we bring up Gus Johnson. I love that guy, I wish he could announce my life at all times.

Gus Johnson for Prez! Dick is just annoying. I think it stems from the fact that he coached at UDM amd never got a shot for the the big boys as to why he acts like he does toward Michigan.

I personally don't mind it. And I think you're exaggerating when you say it's incomprehensible yelling, but I get your point.
Not a lot of commentators show enthusiasm, I can only think of a few off the top of my head. The only ones that come to mind are Gus Johnson, Dick V, and Doc Emrick.

Eh, he said a lot of good things about UM too. I don't mind it, because frankly most people who aren't UM fans do think Meyer is awesome.

That's just not true - every knowledgable college football fan knows what a d-bag he is. Ask anyone on tBB. They'll say he's good and a winner but a complete d-bag.

    True. Let me rephrase that:

Every person who isn't a knowledgeable fan think Meyer is awesome, because of the major success he had at UF. So it's not hard to understand why Dick V would want to play for him.

True, but it just rubbed me the wrong way that he was in Ann Arbor at a game where Denard, Kovacs, and Hoke were all at, and just talked about the OSU football program instead of Michigan's.

And for this particular case, Dick Vitale is megaphone NOT a knowledgable college football fan. That was made clear to me 5 seconds into a college football rant of his. Makes sense he has the media opinion of Coach Urbs.

Utah fans love Meyer even though he bolted for UF after only a couple seasons. They'd always argue they were a BCS level team? But then bent over and said how Urbz needed tO go to a better program. It was bizarre.

  • I believe "Huge screaming trademark" was the phrase I used in a comment on Mgoblog.

He says the same things over and over again, and he tries to be Dickie V so hard that he has just become a parody of himself (if there ever was something there that wasn't a parody).

  • He was great in the mid and late 80's. For the last 15 years he's been nothing more than an annoying Dook flunkie. Case in point: the DSPN chat with Vitale yesterday morning discussing coach of the year candidates.

    Dan (THE U)

Who do you think is National Coach of the Year at this point? Can anyone stop Jim Larranaga?

    Dick Vitale (11:18 AM)
"Larranaga is certainly in the mix. There are a lot of good candidates. What about the job Krzyzewski and Duke given Ryan Kelly being out. "

    Cosmo (Anytown, USA)
What job is Coach K doing without Kelly? They are flawed and lost by more than any #1 ranked team ever - and they will not challenge the better teams from other conferences. The ACC stinks right now. Keep up the good work.

    Dick Vitale (11:29 AM)
Bottom line is he has done an amazing job. They did get blown out of a game and that happens. Carolina got blown out by Florida State and then went to win the title. Kelly is a key guy and obviously you are a Duke hater and are absolutely thrilled when Duke comes up short. To knock Coach K is an absolute joke; we should all do what Coach K has done in his career. He is an outstanding hmanitarian who is so dedicated to help raise money in the battle for cancer at the V Foundation. Obviously anything he does will not please you. He has done a great job this season and his team is in the top five, with wins over the likes of Louisville and Ohio State. Give me a break."

Lol, Carolina got blown out when they still had Kendall Marshall. He has no ring. Amusing how he trips over himself to ALWAYS try to build up Dook; he's done this with increasing regularity over the years (and precisely what does Coach K's cancer fundraising have to do with "coach of the year" honors? Smh).

Now Jay Bilas? Different story altogether. I enjoy listening to him. Dook Vitale? Not so much anymore.

  • I kind of understand where you guys are coming from I guess, but I have an uncle who worked at ESPN for years, so I've gotten to meet Dicky V personally, and he's the nicest guy. All the work he does for the Jimmy V foundation is truly admirable. His antics don't annoy me nearly as much as you guys and I hold absolutely nothing against him for saying he's an Urban Meyer fan while calling an Ohio State game. I don't like color guys who get old and senile (Digger, Lou Holtz) but I don't believe that to be the case with Vitale. He still knows college basketball as much as anyone.

  • I like him, I don't really overanalyze commentators though and I like the old dudes usually. I'll take even senile Musberger over some of the non-descript young ESPN dudes, I like Mickey Redmond, I liked Bob Cole even.

  • I like Dick V. He was a big Fab Five fan. He's a big Duke/Coach K Homer. But the truth is that Coach K deserves any accolades he gets.

  • He's become a caricature of himself. He's annoying and played out. His favortism shines through for a few teams, and he has no qualms w/ being biased.

    thevictor_11

  • Not a fan of Dick Vitale, at all. I think he brings a lot of excitement and enthusiasm to his announcing, but every time I am forced to watch a game that he calls, I just feel like he's gimmicky. He will talk about random topics with no relation on the game for minutes at a time, say things that are just plain inaccurate, and attempts to make up for it all through random screaming and yelling. If his analysis was extremely interesting or something it might make up for it, but when it's Michigan vs. Indiana and you spent a huge section of the time talking about Florida, you lose some credibility as a game announcer in my book.
