OT: Who's the best point guard in the NBA?

  • I can't remember an era in the NBA where there were so many outstanding point guards all at the same time. You really can't go wrong with any of them.

How would you rank the following?

    Rose
    Rondo
    Westbrook
    Chris Paul
    Deron Williams
    Nash
    John Wall

Feel free to add someone else in there if I forgot them.

  • And for the purposes of this thread, let's assume they're all 100% healthy.

Rose Rondo Westbrook Chris Paul Deron Williams Nash John Wall

#1 Chris Paul - He single-handily carried the Clippers to the playoffs. His passing ability is amazing and he is a great defender as well. His assist/turnover ratio is off the charts. Very good ball handler. He is also very clutch, just put the ball in his hands and he'll make something good happen.

#2 Rajon Rondo - Probably the most well-rounded PG in the league. He does everything. Great passer, great defender, great rebounder (for a PG), his shooting isn't the best but he is getting better at it every year.

#3 Derrick Rose - Rose is very talented, my problem with him is that he is pretty much a SG playing PG. I really don't like PGs like that. He averages 3 turnovers a game, not very careful passing the ball. Very good driving the lane, very crafty around the basket.

    #4 Deron Williams

    #5 Russell Westbrook

    #6 Stephen Curry

    #7 Tony Parker

    #8 Kyrie Irving

    #9 John Wall

    #10 Steve Nash

I got lazy on the writing after #3 lol Sorry

Also - I'd watch out for Michael Conley this year. I think he could very well sneak into the top 10.

  • I'm not big on rankings but I think that Chris Paul is the best PG in the NBA followed by Derrick Rose.

But Lebron James is essentially a point guard in a power forward's body. Hence, he's a point forward in the mold of Magic Johnson.

Todd, I'm surprised that Kyrie Irving isn't on your list. Many people don't know this but Irving had one of the most statistically efficient and impressive PG rookie seasons in NBA history. According to John Hollinger, Irving's rookie season ranks up there with Magic Johnson's rookie season in the NBA.

Just completely slipped my mind. With camp just starting for NBA teams, I haven't put as much thought to the NBA lately, and especially so with the Cavs since they didn't make the playoffs. Thanks for the reminder though.

I agree with this for the most part. I'd probably put Curry a little lower, and put Westbrook ahead of Williams. But you really can't go wrong with any of these guys. You could put those top-3 on your list in any order, and I'd be fine with it.

  • While I'm in no rush to see it happen, I'm interested to see Rondo play in the post-Big 3 era in Boston. Ray Allen is gone, but Pierce and Garnett are still there. Will Rondo be even better when those guys move on, or will he be more exposed? I think he'll be even better, but I could see it going either way.

I can definitely see a case for that, but I am real high on Curry. He is VERY good, he is just never healthy. But i might be a little biased since Curry is one of my favorite players in the league.

  • I think CP3 is the best because he is the most complete of all the guys you mentioned. CP3 can get others involved or he can take over the game if need be.
    2. Derek Rose is more of a scoring point guard and I just don't think he is on the same level as Paul.
    3. Derron Williams Most people tend to forget about him because the Nets werent really competitive last year and years past.
    4. Rondo - Does everything really well except shoot the ball which allows teams to clog the lane up and hurts the rest of the team.
    5. Steve Nash - Even though he's at the end of his career he can still ball, I think he will be a bit more rejuvated since joining an actual contender in the Lakers. Really hope Kobe can get him a ring Nash is a good dude.
    6. Ricky Rubio- I love his game he's just so fun to watch he gets everyone involved and even though he may be a bit flashly most of the time it is the right play. I was so bummed when he got hurt last year, If he was on a better team (although I think he may be able to take the Wolves to the playoffs) he would probably be ahead of Nash and Rondo on my list.

  • You really disrespecting Kyrie Irving, he is the real deal. Just as good as any of them. My list if all healthy

    1. Derek Rose
    2. Chris Paul
    3. Deron Williams
    4. Kyrie Irving (Think he can pass Williams this year as well)
    5. Rondo
    6. Nash
    7. Westbrook
    8. Wall

@Michmania - No way Kyrie is better than Rondo. A case can be made for Rondo as the best PG in the league, you cannot make that case and sound logical doing it with Kyrie. He might be the best in 3 or 4 years down the road, but no way he is even a top 5 PG atm.

  • Was Rondo invited to USA select team and look who he played with last year 3 hall of fame players.

Here is a link to show you how good his rookie season was not to mention he only played 11or so games at Duke.

    blank

Kyrie points per game - 18.5
    Rondo points per game 11.9
    Advantage: Kyrie

Kyrie assists per game - 5.4
Rondo assists per game - 11.7
    Advantage: Rondo

Kyrie rebounds per game - 3.8
Rondo rebound per game - 4.9
    Advantage: Rondo

Kyrie steals per game - 1.1
Rondo steals per game - 1.9
    Advantage: Rondo

Kyrie has the advantage in scoring. That's it. Rondo is a better passer, a better defender, and he is also more careful with the ball.

Kyrie's rookie season was phenomenal, but he isn't better than Rondo.

Aren't Rondo's stats helped tremendously by the fact that he plays for the Celtics and not the Cavs?

  • I see you forgot to add that Irving played 30mins a game and Rondo played 36mins

And Irving was 19, think about those numbers at that age and basically not playing college ball.

Last will add that Rondo career average for assists is 8.1

Not really. He's playing with a bunch of washed up superstars. Without Rondo, Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce would have done terrible last year.

@Michmania - Yes, Kyrie is only 19.. And yes that is very impressive at his age, especially with not a lot of experience. I even think Kyrie will be the best PG in the league in about 3 or 4 years. But to say he is better than Rondo at right this moment is ludicrous imo. And yeah Rondo's career assist is 8.1. But he's averaged 11+ assists for the past 2 years. He's broken out, and he'll continue to average double digit assists from here on out, I'd be willing to bet on it.

KG and Paul Pierce are not washed up as well.

Same here bro.. I've got this thread bookmarked.

And that's your opinion I guess. Can't really prove that they are washed up, but just imo they are. Maybe not Garnett, but Pierce definitely is imo..

He's a product of Rondo nowadays.. He cannot create a shot for himself anymore.

Again, I can't prove this.. You just have to watch Celtics games and see for yourself.

  • Chauncey Billups isn't really in this conversation because his day has largely come and gone, but I think he was one of the most grossely UNDERRATED players in basketball his whole career.

One of those guys where you don't realize how truly great he is until he isn't in your lineup anymore. Of all the guys we DIDN'T get rid of when we were in our youth movement, it's too bad we didn't keep him as long as possible.
