  • Since we're boycotting tBB, thought I'd post this here.

What are your thoughts on these 2 highly recruited prospects? All due respect to our friends at PSU, the situation for the next 4-5 years will be pretty bleak. Their entire tenure at PSU will be under probation. If they stay true to their commitment they will undoubtedly be hailed as true Penn State Men(is that a distinction over there?).

My opinion, is that they are making a mistake in going to that program in the post-Sandusky/JoePa era.I get the love for the school and the passion to honor your word, but if there ever was 'an out' this would be it. The Program they pledged to, lied to them about who they are and what they represent. I get O'B is a good man, but there is no guarantee that he will even stay with all the scrutiny.

Do you think they are making a mistake?

  • If they were my child or brother, I would tell them they can't/shouldn't go there.

Nope. I admire them for sticking with Penn State in this situation. I disagree that the Program lied to them about who they are. The Progarm isn't the few guys(yes I know they were the leaders of the school) who chose to hide the terrible thing that was going on with Sandusky. The Program is the thousands of guys who have gone through and will go through Penn State that had no idea this was going on. The Program was betrayed and lied to by those few who covered up for Sandusky.

  • Well sure its admirable they are doing it, but is it truly the best thing for them and their careers? You don't think that stigma will follow them around? I know what the program is today, is vastly different than it was this time last year, but still. No Bowl games No B1G championships. They are cheating themselves of the 'experience' of college football. Its basically a 4-5 year training camp.

Not sure how it would hurt their careers. If they can play the NFL will find them. I don't know. Sometimes standing up for something you believe in is more rewarding than the benefit you get from doing the easy thing. These kids obviously believe the NCAA was wrong and that the culture of Penn State has been unjustly attacked.

I don't want to interrupt the Michigan feeling on these guys, but I do want to correct this. Breneman was leaning against PSU before BOB came on the scene. Hackenberg wasn't even recruited by PSU before BOB. How have they been lied to? None of the people in the program when these kids committed lied to them about who they are and what they represent. I don't know where this notion came from.

We're boycotting tBB? Why am I always out of the loop? I'll gladly join the party.

As for Breneman/Hackenberg, I understand their decision... I think. If their priorities are to make the NFL, going to Penn State will not necessarily put them at a disadvantage. While Penn State will be mediocre at best during their 4/5 years, you see kids get picked up all the time from low-calibre programs (and Penn State is still far above that level). If they are good enough, they will make it to the league, no questions asked.

If another one of their top priorities is to play for their favorite team in Beaver Stadium, all the power to them. Put Michigan in a similar position, I strongly doubt Shane Morris would go anywhere else. Fandom is a very strong pull for some recruits and it cannot be understated. Also, if they play well and are the heart of a successful offense, they will be celebrated their entire lives with the greatest of PSU legends.

The only reason I am not entirely sold on their choice is because of wins and losses. I'm sure they are somewhat optimistic about the program and have some hope that BoB will keep it respectable, but these are kids who could attend schools that will compete for national titles year-in-year-out.

I respect the hell out of them (and all the other PSU commits) who are sticking with the University through this rough time. I will be pulling for them soon as they get on the field.

I think you are taking this too literally. The way I perceive it is that the program they grew up rooting for (due to Paterno, their values, etc) is not the same program today. Therefore, in a sense, they were lied to.

And don't feel like you're interrupting the board. These are your recruits and I would love to hear your opinion(s). You guys know how to keep it civil, so feel free to chime in.

If they were lied to, the lying happened long before they committed. The kids did not commit to Paterno. They did not commit to Paterno State. The committed to BOB and Penn State after the facts were set forth. They now have a few months to change their decisions if they would like since they know more now than they did then. They committed to a guy who barely knew a thing about PSU as a place until January.

I'm honestly not sure how they were lied to. The program is the same today as it was the day they committed. That's where I'm confused about this. And if they do not want to be a part of it, then that's their prerogative and they have time to decide that. But I guarantee the reason they leave is not the program, but the sanctions. They both love the program, flaws and all, and hopefully for us the flaws aren't too difficult to overcome.

Good post. I don't think Breneman and Hackenberg are making a mistake because they can still achieve their ultimate goals of playing in the NFL, getting a great education, and play football in the Big Ten. The sanctions hurt and personally I wouldn't go to PSU if all this happened but I wouldn't call it a mistake at all.

  • Breneman was always going to end up at PSU regardless of the coach. When you grow up in that part of PA you dream of becoming a Nittany Lion. Regardless of PSU's situation he was always going to his dream school.

  • I respect the heck out of both of those guys, even when their favorite program is at an all time low, they still are standing firm with their commitments. Takes true courage imho. Going to root the heck for them in their college careers.

He said he was leaning against PSU with Paterno, but BOB using his TE's the way he did in New England changed his mind.

He said what he was supposed to say. Do you really think Adam was going anywhere else? I just dont see it. Also have you been hearing anything about 2015 recruit Jordan Whitehead? Kid is going to be a stud!!!

Why was he supposed to say it? Doesn't really make sense. He's supposed to say why he loves PSU, not why he disliked the old staff.

Haven't heard anything about Whitehead in a while. We're having enough trouble with the 2013 class...

He always said that he loved PSU just not a JoePa fan. He isnt the first PA recruit turned off by Joe. Are you guys completely out of it for DJ? Is it just down to Pitt and ohio?

Yes on us being out of it. It's Pitt, OSU and VT. Big Pitt lean right now, but my God is that program in the dumps. We're probably better off his 4 years than they are at this point...

That's why saying something like "he was always going to PSU" is incorrect. Spence was "always going to PSU" and he's now at OSU.

Should've clarified. If not for the Sandusky stuff, he would've been at PSU.

  • I could see why they would stay committed if it was their dream school, but I would advise my child to look elsewhere. First 3 years there will have bowl bans and then the last year or 2 if they RS, will be filled with young kids making up for lost scholarships. No thanks.
