Michigan fans know the dark years that we went through on both the BB court (Sanctions, Elerbe, Amaker,) and football field (Carr;s swoon and Rich Rod).
It seemed that the OSU/UM rivalry in the two major sports was getting lopsided. In fact, the stats quoted by Dick Vitale last night about combined records in the rivalry of those two sports since 2004 (and parroted by MSU fans at work today) are based primarily on those dark years.
Well, the football program has begun its return on the field and the basketball team is even further ahead in its turn-around. The 2004, 2005, etc. seasons are only as relevant as any other historical records. They are fine for a discussion about history, but not current teams.
The more relevant stat to the rivalry is this: The rivalry has come down to home-court or field advantage. Both schools have won all the home games in both sports since January 2011. That will last until at least this fall and is likely to extend until and through the next basketball season. In addition, the recruiting classes for both schools make it look like the trend will continue in both sports (as opposed to one school getting the upper hand on the other).
We'll see how it goes.....

We shall see if the rivalry is back in football.
All due respect but that win over that 6-7 OSU team lead by Fickell was against the worse OSU team in history.
I know we beat some bad michigan teams but we beat some good ones as well.
We should be unbeaten coming into AA next year.

i thought so...
was a good game, hard fought...
um is definitely heading in the right direction (man those rr yrs killed you guys)...
i think the rivalry can get back to the 06 type game fairly quickly (and has actually begun, see last game)
what is going to be interesting to see is who's game plan proves to work better, hoke's power vs meyer's speed...
both have worked in other programs (bama's power, florida's speed etc...) given proper development and execution...
i agree with the op's assessment that the home team "should" have the edge going forward, i say should because lots of things can happen in a season (injuries, busts etc..)
the one thing i am looking to see from um is a signature win...not that we have beaten a bama type team either, but beating wisc, psu, neb, msu and um last yr was very tough...
um lost to all the good teams they faced last yr and they need to win most of those going forward (and i think they will)

Not to flame the subject of speed vs power, but haven't we already seen that speed can win that game? In 2006, you had an awesome team, as did OSU. OSU ran a spread attack with 3 and 4 wide outs w/ a mobile QB Troy Smith. You had Henne, Hart and good receivers/OL. That was what I envision our battles becoming in next few years. Good, hard fought, close game between two different styled teams both loaded with talent.
