Notre Dame v. Alabama

  • Got into an argument with a ND fan about this on another forum, so I'll pose the question here to reassure myself that I'm not taking crazy pills. How would a hypothetical BCS championship game between Alabama and Notre Dame play out? I'm thinking Bama issues a beatdown like they gave LSU last year, one of those "win by 3+ scores," "losing team was lucky to advance past midfield" sort of affairs. Anyone disagree?

  • It would be worse than last year. Everett Golson or Tommy Rees v. the Alabama D? Please. Not to mention the fact that the one of the main reasons ND's defense has been so good is their DL, which would be totally and completely negated by Alabama's beastly OL.

Seriously, it wouldn't be close. It would be a beatdown of epic proportions.

We held ND to 13 in SB after handing them the ball six times on TOs. Purdue, with one of the worst defenses in the B10, held them to 20 in SB. Alabama would beat them 42-0. And Gholson would be lucky to leave the game with just a mild concussion.

This is why part of me want them to reach the NC and get humiliated a la OSU 2006. We took our licks at the beginning of the season so our boys would know what it's like to play an NC-caliber team. Too many ND fans have been running their mouths on tBB.

2 lucky wins and a handful of one-score games do not mean you're a great team. Beating the tar out of anyone and everyone on your schedule is a different matter. Bama's closest game this year was against Ole Miss, where they still won by 19.

BTW, we should take solace - Bama's second smallest margin of victory was against us, with 27. Other margins have been 32, 33, 35, and 52.

  • Um let me preface the question with another one....does anyone here think notre dame is better than Michigan, raise your hand.....I didn't think so. So they would do worse than we did. Complete domination in every single aspect of the game.

  • Probably it would not be a pretty game for ND. That defense is nasty and make Tommy Rees/EG make a lot of mistakes.

Again, if our defense can hold ND to 13 (even while the offense is consistently turning the ball over and giving up terrible field position) then I would expect Bama's D to hold ND to 7 or less.

  • No rational ND fan could possibly think they have a snowball's chance in hell.

  • We should have beaten ND at their house any ND fan that thinks otherwise is clueless. Alabama's second string would start the second half, it wouldn't even be close.

ND will not make the BCSCG. They will lose to Oklahoma and maybe even a second team. My BCS Bowl predictions have them in the Fiesta Bowl against KSU.

    BCSCG: Alabama v. Oregon
Rose Bowl: Michigan v. Oregon State
Fiesta Bowl: Kansas State v. Notre Dame
    Sugar Bowl: Georgia v. Oklahoma
    Orange Bowl: FSU v. Louisville

There is an outside shot we could get a rematch with ND in the Rose Bowl. If Alabama (SEC) and Oregon (P12) run the table and end up in the BCSCG, the Sugar Bowl and Rose Bowl get the first picks from among the BCS eligible at large pool to replace them. The SEC will almost certainly have multiple BCS eligible teams (i.e. ranked in top 14) and will pick one of them. The P12, however, is a bit dicier. In addition to Oregon, there are three P12 teams currently ranked in the BCS top 25 ... #8 Oregon State (5-0), #10 USC (5-1) and #20 Stanford (4-2). All three still have to play Oregon and if Oregon runs the table that means all three will have at least one more loss. That will probably take Stanford out of contention for a BCS bowl entirely. And if USC picks up a third loss anywhere, they also likely would be out. For those reasons, my prediction right now is for us to meet Oregon State in the Rose Bowl. But if Oregon State also were to pick up a third loss somewhere along the way, that would free up the Rose Bowl to pick a team outside the P12 to replace Oregon (because no other P12 team would be BCS eligible). My guess is there would be a strong push for them to pick ND.* They could not pick an SEC team (only two per conference allowed), and I just can't see the Rose Bowl being excited by WVU. And no way will they pick a BE #2 or ACC #2 over ND. If Oklahoma comes in 2nd in the B12 and is BCS eligible, the Rose Bowl probably would pick them over ND to avoid the rematch. But otherwise there is a high likelihood ND would end up as the replacement for Oregon in the Rose Bowl.

    * The last time ND played in the Rose Bowl was 1925.

I cant believe this question is even on here....its like asking if Michigan this year could be the Knute Rockne teams of yore, clearly 1924 ND wins that game and completely shuts down Denard.

I think they would agree to this IF we conceded that Notre Dame should have beaten Michigan last year in Ann Arbor for the first ever scheduled night game.

They should have. Honestly, we had no business winning that game. Jeremy Gallon should never have been as wide open as he was on that last drive.

I would agree with that. We had a lot of breaks in that game. The one that I remember most was when Reese left the ball behind during his throwing motion.

  • I have a hard time believing there are ND fans out there that think we could beat Bama. You guys lost by 27 we'd lose by 20-21. Mr.Woodson whom I normally disagree with was pretty accurate predicting 1/2 L's for us, but I thought we'd lose 4/5 games this year so what do I know.shrug Only expectations I had on this season was to see Golson starting and getting better and better. All signs have been pointing to ND to make a run in 2013, so we are a year ahead of schedule..

I haven't seen any ND fans say we would beat Bama either. Think maybe OP is loco

Notre Dame wouldn't score against Bama...ND would get a "welcome to the BCS talk" type of beat down.....and I believe Saban would keep the pedal to the metal and put 50 on the board...
