Jandy, I think we both have been here enough that if this thread was full of Michigan fans saying ND wins, there would have been no level-headed comment.

I like to believe the best of people, so I don't know what you're talking about.

  • If history is any guide the Irish will be 2-1 going into the Michigan game.

Your point about Rees is well taken. While I do think that it has a higher likelihood of being an issue for ND, it is fair to say that if Maxwell struggles or is injured, MSU could be in a very rough situation offensively.

Regarding the OL, I don't blame you for doubting MSU's ability, as the OL has not been as good as many had hoped. I am, however, curious why you have a level of faith in ND's OL. Purdue held their rushing game back, and had multiple sacks. Meanwhile, though Purdue's DL is very likely better than Boise's, MSU has not yet allowed any sacks and had a very successful rushing game against Boise.

I don't blame you for your opinion, I'm just curious how you came to that conclusion.

I wouldn't consider MSU's run game against Boise as very successful. They averaged just over 4 yards a carry against a Mountain west opponent that lost a lot of starters. I would say that is an average showing at best. ND's OL is much more battle tested in that they played Purdue and their DL is considered to be one of the better units in the Big Ten.

  • I have no bias in this game because I HATE both team with the fire of a 1000 suns. However, I will tell you why I think ND wins. They are the more complete team at this point and have many more options on offense than MSU. I do think MSU's D is far and wide better, especially in the back end. The only reason I think MSU loses is b/c ND's front 7 is very solid and I don't think MSU has anyone else who can beat you.

This could prove challenging; ND's front 7 is likely the best we'll face all year. Dion Sims, Andrew Gleichart and Lawrence Thomas will be very relied upon for check-downs, mismatches, and definitely blocking LB's.

A lot will depend on how much time the OL can give Maxwell early in the game. If they can protect him long enough for the WR's to break from the weaker DB's, then it's on Maxwell to take advantage, and I believe he will.

But your remarks are definitely part of what I imagine most MSU fans are more concerned with.

  • Anyone less impressed with ND after the way Penn State whooped on Navy? PSU actually had some punch and I'm not sure if its because they're starting to come around or because Navy is that bad. I'm leaning towards the later...

Is Lawrence Thomas playing on offense?

Yes, he is at fullback. He destroyed some people on blocks last week. He is still practicing at DLine as well, but Dantonio said he is too good to keep off the field.

Isn't he a little tall for a FB?

He's 6'5", 285, or something like that. In MSU's HB role, receiving is also potentially involved.

Honestly, seeing Michigan State's vaunted defense look this bad against a 1st-year QB can only help us.

Do you know if any of the other Cass Tech guys are at this game?

This is honestly embarrassing that the MSU receivers can't take advantage of this secondary. FFS, they've got Bennie Fowler, Keith Mumphery, Tony Lippett and DeAnthony Arnett. There is no reason their passing game should be getting shut down like this. The fact that the receivers can't get open fast enough to avoid a true freshman sacking the crap out of Maxwell is pathetic.

Doesn't look good now but there's a lot of football to be played.

Could really use a pic-6 right now.

    Edit: but I'll take that.

  • The MSU defense is getting some hits in when Golson stays in the pocket, but the corners can't make a play when Golson gets flushed out.

If I had a nickle for everytime I heard of a player who was so good they just had to get him in at FULLBACK, I would now have a nickle.
