Notre Dame Exercises 3-Year Opt Out in Michigan Rivalry

  • Everyone...

Just ran across this... and I know it is from BR (at least it is not about recruiting)... but just passing along the information.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - Notre Dame has notified Michigan it is exercising a three-year out in their contract, meaning their last scheduled game against each other will come in 2014.

A letter from Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick to Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon cancelling games in 2015-2017 was obtained by The Associated Press on Tuesday through a Freedom of Information Act request.

The Irish beat the Wolverines 13-6 Saturday night in the latest game of a storied series that dates to 1887. They've played every year since 2002 and regularly since 1978.

Michigan and Notre Dame were scheduled to take a hiatus during the 2018-19 seasons.

The Fighting Irish recently decided to move to the Atlantic Coast Conference other than in football with a provision to play five games a year against league opponents

EDIT: blue2468: Just added a more "credible" link for those who don't like BR.

  • No surprise, with the ACC deal coming.

This is the reality. Michigan will have to scramble now for a 2015 and 2016 opponent, and we won't find anyone with the name recognition of ND. Kind of sucks. But that is now the reality.

  • Frankly, all B1G teams should pull them off their schedule. If they want to be a quasi ACC team, go for it. I think the MSU-ND series takes a 2 year break starting in 2014, but I wouldn't be shocked if they opted out of that as well so hopefully MSU is working on a contingency plan.

ND is making a lame move. I honestly enjoy the MSU-ND and UM-ND games a lot. They have been great games over the years.

  • I'm a little disappointed, the ND game is always exciting and fun to watch.

ND is just so easy to hate...

  • I just took a quick look at the below website, but it looks like there's some schools available that there wouldn't have to be paniced scramble. Okie State is available, Arizona, possible UCLA, Washington, Auburn, possible Georgia, Mizzou, Tennessee has dates open later or possible Texas A&M.

I'm not sure how complete/accurate the site is but there are some big names schools that do have dates available yet. I'm sure if DB picks up the phone any number of schools would at least listen and be willing to schedule a series.

We already have two BCS opponents (Utah and Oregon State) and UNLV scheduled for 2015, so losing ND is a relatively minor issue. 2016 is very different. In 2016, we have Colorado scheduled for week three but no one else now. That does set up a bit of a scramble. But given that it's four years away and we have three open dates in September plus our bye week in October to play around with, Brandon should be able to find a quality opponent to slot into at least one of those weeks if he really wants to. In fact, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see us do another high profile neutral site game to open the 2016 season. Something like UM v. Georgia in Atlanta.

Arizona would be hilarious. Would get a ton of hype from media and Brandon could get a bunch of money for it.

  • I guess this means I'll go to South Bend in a couple years.. I've always wanted to see that stadium and looks like that might be my last chance.

If it is still there and hasn't moved yet, visit the College Football HoF.

    It's amazing.

ND definitely doesn't want to play Michigan, Miami, and/or Florida State in the same season.

  • I wouldn't sweat it, this gives us the chance to schedule more games vs opponents outside the Midwest and more flexibility.

Unless it is set up as a neutral site game, UM wouldn't get any extra money to play Arizona. It might produce good TV ratings, but a home game would fall under the B10's TV agreements and an away game would fall under the P12's. Michigan will get the same distribution from the B10 no matter who they schedule.

Just sayin'. Unless maybe Brandon can set up a wager with RR to pay back the $2.5 million we paid to WVU on his behalf if we win. In that case, sign 'em up baby!

  • I think this rivalry can easily continue (probably after 2019 it looks like). It probably wont be an annual matchup, but how hard would it be for ND to schedule Michigan once every 3 years, and ND could do that with their Big Ten rivals, schedule Michigan, MSU and Purdue once every three years on a rotating basis. This still gives them flexibility to be primaddonas while having a consistent cycle with their other rivalries. It might make our rivalry with them more intense in some aspects, because we only play them once every 3 years

Why should Michigan cater to ND.

Alot of variables with scheduling a big name non-conference opponent.....it would probably have to be played at a neutral site, or be a home and home to make the finances work for both schools.

I dont look at it like that, I would like to keep the rivalry going, and once every 3 years is not too much to ask
