Exactly. A lot of recruits take it as a real offer if a coach says "If you visit or you do this or that then we will offer." This means you do not have an offer yet, plain and simple. I really don't like the term non-commitable offer, that just means you don't have one. Why would a coach say you have an offer but no you can't commit? Doesn't make sense to me.

There is a such thing in a sense. For PSU, you can have an offer, but if your spot is filled, it's filled. I guess technically you were still offered, but you can't commit because the class is out of room (in total or at that position).

Agree with everyone in this thread (all those that I can read) - you either have an offer or you don't.

Unfortunately, kids fall for it. I think part of the reason is that if they don't try to commit, then the recruit themselves never quite finds out if it's "committable" or not.

The reason coaches do it is because it's a hook. Coach A comes along, verbally offers a recruit. From that point on, the staff can say "hey, we offered you early, we believe in you." Even though it's not a real offer, the recruit feels special because he got one and considers the school more strongly from an earlier time.

And to shav's point - I think technically the offer would be rescinded in that case. In that case, it was assumed to have been committable during the time that it was extended. To me, that's completely different scenario.

What about Burbridge last year? He was offered, yet supposedly told he couldn't commit because of his grades. How would you classify that?

Nope they didn't have offers once the 5 OL committed. Things change in recruiting. Michigan now has an available scholarship to offer.
