Next year's starting QB?

  • Who do you think starts for the Wolverines?

    Options:

    1. Bellomy. Pretty talented. Coaches like him and it will be his third year in the system. Has at least some game experience (and hopefully will get more this weekend.)

    2. Garnder. Was the #2 back-up until a need arose at WR. Obviously, he should stay at WR, but he has to change his own mind. If he doesn't, it could be him.

    2. Morris. Very talented. But, he will be a true frosh. Outsiders seem to think he is good enough to come in and start.

Personally, I think there should be no debate - but there will be. It should be Bellomy. He is by all accounts talented. He got offers from a lot of schools, including schools that have a history of good QBs (Purdue, Boise State) and other BCS-level schools (MSU, Colorado, Minnesota, etc.) Plus, the coaches seem to trust him enough to move Gardner. He has also looked good in practices and the spring game. More than anything, he will be in his third year of the playbook and practicing and sometimes playing against BCS-level players.

In some ways, he would be like Maxwell for MSU.....but with WRs that are talented and don't drop the ball. Maxwell has performed well this year, even if the rest of the passing game has let him down.

So, can we end this debate before it consumes the entire off-season.

+1. I agree with everything you said. Bellomy should be the guy.
People are acting like Morris is already better than Bellomy, and that is just not true imo. No way a true freshman is more suited to play in Borges' offense than a QB who has been in the system for two years.

    Morris should redshirt.

I think you hit it on the head. I think Bellomy starts and they dont look back. He's talented enough to play .. and it we get our OLine even more in tune .. and they open up some holes for our running game .. it will make him that much more effective.

As for Gardner .. I think they should keep him at wideout and let him continue to progress there. I've said it before and I'll say it again .. I can see him becoming an Anquan Bolden type of receiver. Similar bodies and athleticism.

Let Shane be the emergency backup next year (meaning 3rd string) and hope we wont have to burn his redshirt. If Shane can sit a whole year and learn what the coaches are trying to do with the playbook .. we can get 3 guaranteed years of his behind center. I'd like that .. a lot.

Morris redshirting is a good idea, but I don't see it.

Gardner has said he still wants to be the QB when Denard leaves. If he stays with that, then I think he battles it out with Bellomy and then needs to STAY at QB. But, the more likely scenario is that he just STAY at WR if he chooses that OR if he loses out to Bellomy. I don't think you can have a new starting QB who is backed up by only a part-time QB. I think they will have to keep Morris as an option and they will want to get him some game experience. I hope I am wrong, but I just can't see us affording that luxury.

  • Gardner would be good at QB...but there are times he looks like a potential 1st rounder at WR. He would be smart to stay there.

  • I think the fact Gardner is wearing 12 this year might be a hint. Gardner was recruited as a quarterback and I think Hoke & Co will give him every chance to compete for that position.

I like Bellomy as well, guess we'll see who wins out over the off season.

  • I have a question .. figure I'd drop it in this thread.

What have you seen from Devin that gives you such high confidence in his at QB? I'm wondering because I haven't seen anything that would make me feel comfortable with him running the offense.

That's not to say he cant do it .. I just haven't seen it.

  • I thought Gardner made some great strides in terms of maturing as a QB when he came into games in 2011. He is a very talented QB and I think he is better than Bellomy. Don't get me wrong, Bellomy has potential to be an excellent quarterback but Gardner will know the offense better as a senior next year. With Gardner's athletic ability, if he can be smart with the football, he's a really dangerous player. That being said, he might be more valuable to the team because of the lack of receivers at Michigan.

  • Only think that concerns be about Bellomy is his arm strength. This spring will be big for him because Morris is coming for his job in the fall.

I agree with this post 99.9%.* Also, for all you people who think Gardner should stay at WR and Morris should red shirt, who do you expect to be Bellomy's backup? QBs get dinged up in games all the time. Sometimes they even run into trouble off the field or get injured in a game for the rest of the season. Or your starter throws three picks in the first quarter of a big game and you want to have another option in your back pocket.

A major program like Michigan should always have four scholarship QBs. We have skated by with three the past couple of years because we never replaced Tate. And we've been lucky. No one else got seriously injured or was suspended for off field issues or transferred. But with Denard graduating, if we permanently move Gardner to WR and seriously want Morris to red shirt, we will be down to one active scholarship QB and two sophomore walk-ons who probably are walk-ons for a reason. IMO that's crazy.

    * The reason I didn't put 100% is that by next year we will have Gallon, Dileo, Jackson, Robinson, Darboh, Chesson and Funchess as WRs and TEs who can catch and have some game experience. IMO we will be ok at WR without Gardner and it is more important to have another QB to protect Morris' red shirt.

I regards to the receivers, I honestly don't think that is a great group of proven guys. Gallon has done some great things but has been somewhat inconsistent this year. Gardner is probably better than all of them except maybe Gallon at this point.

Physically, you are probably right. But Gardner is still learning the position. Someone like Darboh who played WR in HS might have some advantages in route running and technique and will be in his second year as a WR at UM just like Gardner. Also, Gallon and Dileo are very good slot guys. They are not big enough to be effective on the outside (see Roundtree) but they will be in the slot regardless of which position Gardner plays. And I am not saying Gardner wouldn't be the best WR, but at least we have a number of other solid options at the position if he plays QB. Alternatively, if he plays WR, who backs up Bellomy?

I'm still not sold on the receivers. Darboh could be a good player but we just don't know yet. We know Gardner can be a big-time receiver from what he has shown already this year. Your right, the QB position will be thin if Gardner stays at WR. Morris would have to back him up and then a walk-on as the third guy. It would probably be best to move Gardner back to QB but theres pros and cons either way. I just really think Michigan should have taken a QB in the 2012 class and two in 2013.

  • I think it should be Bellomy. I think he'll surprise people next year and Gardner will continue being a future first round WR IMO.

And Morris can back him up and still redshirt shrug We'll hopefully not use him, but if we need a QB to come in and replace Bellomy, we can burn his RS.

    I agree with this 100%.

The WR position to me outside of Gardner, Gallon, and Dileo (2 of which are slots) is completely unproven. We know Gardner can be a big-time WR and I think that will be crucial to our offense without Denard next year.

Ideally for me Bellomy starts and you have Shane backing him up while Devin stays at WR being our #1 target. You hope and pray Bellomy can take all the snaps and if possible RS Shane. But realistically we deal with Shane "wasting" a year as Bellomy's backup if he gets injured or for some reason can't take all the snaps.

Without Denard next year Michigan needs all the gamebreakers it can get. To me Gardner looks like a gamebreaker at WR and I wouldn't move him.

  • The reason for DG moving to WR is because they trust Bellomy enough to be the second string if Denard goes down. Gardner will be the QB next year.

    freshone

  • Now that I've thought more about this, a possibility could be Bellomy starting at QB next year but if he goes down they could just move Gardner back to QB. This would mean Gardner would have to get snaps in practice at both WR and QB. Just a possibility I've seen done before.

I understand Gardner's talent at WR. And maybe Gardner will decide that's where he wants to remain. But if that is the plan, then IMO the coaches and Gardner should make that decision no later than December and the coaches should try hard to add a second QB to the 2013 class. They won't get someone of Morris' caliber, but maybe they can snag a solid prospect late in the process just like they did with Bellomy. It will give us a D-1 scholarship option at QB to use to protect Morris' red shirt next year and much needed depth at the position going forward. Assuming we take another QB the following year, we will be back to four scholarship QBs by 2014.

Yeah, but that has its own problems. With Gardner splitting time he's not getting full reps to develop at WR. In fact, I believe that is why the coaches are using Bellomy as the primary backup this year. Borges was asked in camp about this and he basically said that Gardner was the #2 and Bellomy was the #3 but they were going to use Bellomy as the primary backup for "spot duty" and if something happened that knocked Denard out for an extended time they would have to reevaluate whether Gardner or Bellomy would take over full time.

I have the same question about Bellomy. Everyone is acting like Bellomy has done something in a game that makes them all confident that Bellomy will be good. I have not seen anything from Bellomy to make me have confidence that we should just give him the starting QB spot.

My opinion is that it should be open competition in the spring and if Gardner turns out to be the best option at QB then so be it. Best case scenario would be that Gardner can stay at WR and Bellomy turns out good enough to lead this team.

Interesting. Has that actually worked anywhere? What if gardner is the #1 or #2 receiver next year? That would mean that losing your starting QB would also mean losing your best WR target at the same time. He would have to be MUCH MUCH MUCH better than Bellomy IMO for that to happen.

Not sure if it worked, a team just did it because that was their best option at the time. And I agree, Gardner should play QB if he is much better than Bellomy. Like I was saying, theres pros and cons of all these situations and you never know what could happen? Shane Morris could prove he's ready and start the first game of the season. You never really know.

  • My vote goes to Shane Morris. The only thing I'm sure of is I don't wanna see DG as our QB. It will set our offense and pro style back a bit and as much as you guys wanna say he can throw....he can't. Maybe for high school he was good, but not for a major D-1 school. Keep him at WR, he is a playmaker and has a better draft-ability at that position. I want Shane to start, but if Bellomy starts you will see a very conservative offense. Will look a lot like MSU offense but with a major upgrade in the OL. You guys will miss Denard more than you know when he is gone.

Meh .. people can question Bellomy all they want, but you can see from his high school film that he cant make a lot of throws. I'm ok with having the playbook a bit on the conservative side in order to play to his strengths .. and by that I mean .. if its true that his arm strength lacks .. then gear the playbook towards what he can do. I by no means think we should just give him the starting spot .. but I really think Devin would have to destroy Russell in the Spring for him to go back to taking snaps full time. I just dont see it happening.

Devin being the #2 is a definite possibility, ESPECIALLY if the coaches are wanting to redshirt Shane, and Bellomy goes down. Yea, our wideouts would take a hit, but you've gotta do what you've gotta do.

I'm not a huge fan of this with the thought of Gardner being a #1 type WR.

I think that if you want to max out Gardner's potential at WR, he needs to pretty much get his reps at only WR. To split his time, even if not 50-50, only hurts him in the long run. I think they need to commit to him as either the top WR or as a QB.

Now if he wasn't such a potential weapon as a WR, it wouldn't be such a big deal, but it seems like the thought is that he'll be a major "go-to" WR.
