ND possibly to BIG 12

  • theyellowdart said...

Any links? Kinda curious to read on it a bit.

It all started with tweets from Greg Swaim yesterday. The tweets were picked up and posted on a couple of ND sites and repeated by others on twitter. Swaim has a website and radio show, but he's not known for being particulatly reliable. He's more interested in promoting himself. FWIW if someone high up at the B12 or at ND was going to leak the kinds of details he is spewing, it seems unlikely they would leak them to Greg Swaim. Also, not a single reputable source has yet confirmed any of it. You have to think all the traditional and new media outlets for the B12 schools and ND have been actively reaching out to their sources since Swaim sent out his first tweets and none have been able to confirm anything Swaim is saying.

  • I love how ND fans have been about this whole situation. At first they were a “national” program, and then when talk’s about possibly joining the ACC started up they became an “east coast” school. Now they don’t care and it’s all about $$$$$. You guy’s should join the SEC. Their looking for two more member’s. At least you guy’s will still be playing “east coast” school’s. lol

Agree with this a lot...the past few years, Michigan has gone from unranked to ranked just on the strength of beating Notre Dame. Tate Forcier and Denard Robinson became nationally known, nationally discussed players on the strength of playing good games/winning dramatically vs. Notre Dame. Because of Notre Dame's deal with NBC, it's a game that's guaranteed to be nationally televised. It's the two winningest programs in history - two powerhouses from the same region - playing each other every year. This game has way more cachet than pretty much any game we could replace it with. And keep in mind, Notre Dame still and probably will always recruit on a high level...as soon as they can figure out their coaching situation, they're gonna be a perennial top-15 type team again. People who would be "fine" with losing it are being pretty short-sighted, imo.

The fact that we beat ND early in the year 2010, 2011 and became ranked only to lose the remainder of our games does not speak to the relevance of the game, but rather the irrelevance. ND has not been a good measuring stick for competency lately much less excellence. Mediocrity is similar whether it's south bend or toledo.

  • This conversation got me thinking. The Pac-12/B1G series could help recruiting on the West Coast by raising the conference's exposure to their kids. Could be a great thing for the conference.

  • Rivals; 1.OSU,2. MSU, 3/4ND,3/4 PSU, three and four are optional positions. How can ND rank 2nd amongst rivals to an in state, inner divison, conference match-up? Beating Notre Dame does nothing toward a B1G championship, and that is always the goal!

Are you kidding! ND and Michigan have the number 1 and 2 most wins and 1 and 2 highest winning percentages in football. Everytime they play is almost a chance for the other team to take back the lead.

    MSU? Seriously? Not even close.

For reference look up any recent list of the greatest rivalrys in football.

  • I think right now in the moment MSU is the bigger rival because they've beaten us four years in a row, but in the grand scheme of things Notre Dame has been our second biggest rival.

They matter more then MSU, which in turn makes the game matter more.

The new BIG division makeup might amp up our rivalry with MSU, but in a decade we could easily be talking about Nebraska instead.

In state doesn't mean much if it isn't competitive. Historically our rivalry with MSU has been lopsided. While number one and two in wins and winning percentage speak for itself.

ND has been our #2 rivalry because MSU has been mediocre since the 60's (the recent 4 year aberration notwithstanding), and UM and ND for the majority of that time have been top tier...this is evolving and this year MSU is a more important rivalry game

In no way shape or form should we drop the rivalry with ND. It brings national exposure, maybe more night games. Helps in recruiting especially when we beat them. Two of the winninest programs in history. Some people might be thinking differently if they had beat us a couple of those years. Think about how great the games have been the last 3 or 4 years; I'd much rather have that exciting atmosphere than crushing a MAC school or whoever we substitute in there. There is not one negative about this rivalry, only great things come of it. It strengthens both of our schedules and ultimately gives us good wins at the end of the season when they vote for at large bids. You will miss it once it's gone....trust me.

I agree with both of these. The UMvND is a big time national rivalry. Every team has its ups and downs but both teams have been up alot more than down. It's a guarenteed quality ooc game for us every year. I would really hate to see it end.

The question is who would be the 14th member of the B1G if ND joins? Missouri would be a possibility, and things were discussed with them a few years back....Other regional possibilities are Louisville, Pitt, West Virginia, Cincy, Syracuse. Maybe even one of the Virginia schools, or even Boston College if ND comes on board.

On another board that I visit there's an guy saying that ND will join the B1G and then the 14th member would be Maryland. I don't remember where the guy coaches at but he's had a couple girls getting recruited by ND and those coaches have been telling the athletes it'll happen eventually. The same guy is also somehow connected to individuals in the OSU athletic department that are telling him the same things, ND and Maryland will eventually be in, just no exact time table, and then the B1G stays at 14 while others evenatully balloon to 16. He said their endowments are already similar to the B1G schools, this gives PSU their eastern rival, adds to the footprint and that there has to be a bigger reason as to why Gary Williams is on the BTN.

If Maryland leaves the ACC that opens the door for Rutgers to leave the the Big East, then the Big East would probably add 2 teams from the MAC/CUSA and 2 teams from "the far west" to be with Boise and SDSU.

Maryland is an AAU member, adds to the footprint and can give a stronger presence for recruiting in the Virginia/Maryland/DC area where alot of B1G alums and some recruits are located. Maryland would then be able to get away from the "North Carolina control" of the league.

It made sense but not sure if/when it'll happen.

OK you guys are killing me! You are aware we play in a conference one that we have championed 42 times. ND is not in that conference never has and looks to never be. When our coaching staff sits down with the players and tells them winning the
B1G (Big 10) championship is our #1 goal I am pretty sure they are serious. ND has absolutely NOTHING to do with winning a B1G championship therefore it can not be one of our top rivals. Definitely not bigger than our in state conference game that is NOT leaving for the Big 12.
