Agree with this a lot...the past few years, Michigan has gone from unranked to ranked just on the strength of beating Notre Dame. Tate Forcier and Denard Robinson became nationally known, nationally discussed players on the strength of playing good games/winning dramatically vs. Notre Dame. Because of Notre Dame's deal with NBC, it's a game that's guaranteed to be nationally televised. It's the two winningest programs in history - two powerhouses from the same region - playing each other every year. This game has way more cachet than pretty much any game we could replace it with. And keep in mind, Notre Dame still and probably will always recruit on a high level...as soon as they can figure out their coaching situation, they're gonna be a perennial top-15 type team again. People who would be "fine" with losing it are being pretty short-sighted, imo.

The fact that we beat ND early in the year 2010, 2011 and became ranked only to lose the remainder of our games does not speak to the relevance of the game, but rather the irrelevance. ND has not been a good measuring stick for competency lately much less excellence. Mediocrity is similar whether it's south bend or toledo.

Are you kidding! ND and Michigan have the number 1 and 2 most wins and 1 and 2 highest winning percentages in football. Everytime they play is almost a chance for the other team to take back the lead.
MSU? Seriously? Not even close.
For reference look up any recent list of the greatest rivalrys in football.

I think right now in the moment MSU is the bigger rival because they've beaten us four years in a row, but in the grand scheme of things Notre Dame has been our second biggest rival.
They matter more then MSU, which in turn makes the game matter more.
The new BIG division makeup might amp up our rivalry with MSU, but in a decade we could easily be talking about Nebraska instead.
In state doesn't mean much if it isn't competitive. Historically our rivalry with MSU has been lopsided. While number one and two in wins and winning percentage speak for itself.

In no way shape or form should we drop the rivalry with ND. It brings national exposure, maybe more night games. Helps in recruiting especially when we beat them. Two of the winninest programs in history. Some people might be thinking differently if they had beat us a couple of those years. Think about how great the games have been the last 3 or 4 years; I'd much rather have that exciting atmosphere than crushing a MAC school or whoever we substitute in there. There is not one negative about this rivalry, only great things come of it. It strengthens both of our schedules and ultimately gives us good wins at the end of the season when they vote for at large bids. You will miss it once it's gone....trust me.

The question is who would be the 14th member of the B1G if ND joins? Missouri would be a possibility, and things were discussed with them a few years back....Other regional possibilities are Louisville, Pitt, West Virginia, Cincy, Syracuse. Maybe even one of the Virginia schools, or even Boston College if ND comes on board.
