ND possibly to BIG 12

  • The ND rivalry is a nice OOC rivalry, but it's only the 3rd most important in the grand scheme of things. I'd be perfectly fine dropping them and maybe just playing them once every few years.

I'd put ND at #2. It is an important game, just not sure how Dave Brandon can fit that game in the schedule with the PAC-12 series coming quickly.

  • Meh. I like the ND game, no doubt...but for me, it is #3 after OSU and MSU. If it goes...I am not sure how much I will miss it. Maybe after a decade I will think differently.

The landscape of college football has changed a lot in the last decade. With the potential new playoff system alon with the current B1G title game, I could live without ND.

I think the B1G has helped carry ND for a long time now with regular games vs UofM, MSU, Purdue, as well as the multiple offers to join the conference.

I say let them go to the Big 12. I think it's an awkward partnership, but that's their problem.

I agree with you let them leave, all the B1G has done for ND over the last ten or so years is keep it on life support. Now they are talking about leaving for the BIG 12, good luck. ND is a pretty strong academic institution, the rest of the schools in the BIG 12 are not what you would call brain trusts.

Everyone who wants to drop the ND series should be careful what you wish for. When Brandon replaces the ND game with another home MAC opponent every year, you might start having second thoughts. And the same with ND fans. A move to the B12 isn't going to look as good once reality sets in and you realize you just traded annual games with UM, Stanford, MSU and BC for ones with Texas Tech, TCU, Kansas and Louisville.

With the PAC12 series starting, it won't be dropping ND for a team from the MAC...it'll still be a decent matchup from a BCS conference.

ND is no better than our 3rd rival. Its not a conference game and notre dame is not consistently nationally relevant. If ND was still a consistent top 10 or 15 team every season, I'd be all for keeping the series. It'd at least serve as an early season barometer of how good we are. But when they're coming in unranked every season or finishing the season 7-5 or 6-6, it doesn't mean much.

The annual P12 game is going to happen regardless. This has nothing to do with that. And you might not enjoy playing ND or consider it an important rival, but that wasn't the point of my post. Everyone just seems to assume that once we drop the ND game we will replace it with a similar opponent (e.g. Oklahoma, Georgia, Alabama, UT). I highly doubt it. That might happen occasionally, but most years it will just be replaced with another game against Akron or CMU or Ball State. I would much rather continue to play ND.

For me, MSU is #2 this year only because of the winning streak they have. Once we beat them this year, they go back to #3.

Sure we can, and I haven't heard one peep about the P12 game interfering with the UM-ND series. We play 4 home B10 games every year. We also usually "buy" 2 baby seal games. That makes 6 home games. If we alternate the ND and P12 games so that one is always home when the other is away, we always end up with 7 home games. That is Brandon's stated goal.

Interestingly, it will be USC and Stanford that have the most trouble keeping ND on their schedules every year once the B10/P12 series starts. The P12 already plays 9 conference games (and has stated they are not going to change that). Throw in an annual B10 game and suddenly USC and Stanford only have 2 games to play with. If ND is always one of them, USC and Stanford will only end up with 6 home games some years. Not sure how they will feel about that, but it would never fly at UM.

The part about nd being #3 wasn't in response to your post. It was to a previous one. If there's a way to multiquote I haven't figured it out yet lol.

I understand the PAC series is going to happen regardless. My point is just that I wouldn't mind seeing the PAC series without the ND game if for some reason The series had to be ended.

I agree with your point actually. If the ND series is stopped, it's not getting replaced with a Texas, Georgia, etc. it will be a buy game or lower tier BCS team. But getting a PAC team on the slate, at least to me, is comparable to the ND series. If we drop ND and have a PAC team, its just par for the course for the last 12 years or so.

I see where you're coming from, but some people iTT seem to be confused and are looking at this as a trade off of ND for a P12 opponent every year. It's not. It's a trade off of ND for Ball State/EMU/WMU every year with maybe a home-away series against Maryland/Vanderbilt/Syracuse thrown in every few years for variety. Maybe I'm in the minority, but I don't see how that is better than keeping the ND series.

  • The ND game is in the national spotlight every year, regardless of our records. There's something to be said for that. UM vs any PAC12 team not named USC or Oregon just wouldn't receive the same exposure.

While I wouldn't be upset to see them go, I certainly see the value in playing them every year.

Agree with this a lot...the past few years, Michigan has gone from unranked to ranked just on the strength of beating Notre Dame. Tate Forcier and Denard Robinson became nationally known, nationally discussed players on the strength of playing good games/winning dramatically vs. Notre Dame. Because of Notre Dame's deal with NBC, it's a game that's guaranteed to be nationally televised. It's the two winningest programs in history - two powerhouses from the same region - playing each other every year. This game has way more cachet than pretty much any game we could replace it with. And keep in mind, Notre Dame still and probably will always recruit on a high level...as soon as they can figure out their coaching situation, they're gonna be a perennial top-15 type team again. People who would be "fine" with losing it are being pretty short-sighted, imo.

  • In no way shape or form should we drop the rivalry with ND. It brings national exposure, maybe more night games. Helps in recruiting especially when we beat them. Two of the winninest programs in history. Some people might be thinking differently if they had beat us a couple of those years. Think about how great the games have been the last 3 or 4 years; I'd much rather have that exciting atmosphere than crushing a MAC school or whoever we substitute in there. There is not one negative about this rivalry, only great things come of it. It strengthens both of our schedules and ultimately gives us good wins at the end of the season when they vote for at large bids. You will miss it once it's gone....trust me.

  • Isn't it ironic that Nebraska left the Big12 to join the B1G, when ND had all the opportunities in the world to join the B1G in the first place?

  • This would suck to have Nd go anywhere but the B1G . I would rather lose a Northwestern or Minnesota to gain ND .

I like Northwestern. ND can go to the Big 12 if that means we have to lose Northwestern.

I agree. NW is a great member of the B10. And the B10 isn't kicking out anyone.

If ND joins the B12, so be it. Still, I seriously doubt it happens. The ACC is a much better fit on nearly every level. So is the B10 and even the P12. If you asked ND fans 24 or even 12 months ago what they thought of ND joining the B12 they would have laughed in your face, so I don't see how suddenly they are such a perfect fit. Nothing has changed except the ACC's revised TV deal did not turn out as good as expected. Of course, ND has steadfastly said money is not the driving factor on whether or not to join a conference, so that can't be the reason, right? My guess is ND is just jerking the B12 around to create leverage while they negotiate a renewal of their TV deal with NBC/Comcast. After that is done, the talk about ND joining the B12 will quickly fade.

    MrWoodson

  • When I was in AA, ND was a slightly bigger rivalry because they were the more prestigious program. They still are the more "prestigious" program. It was also a more enjoyable game because of their more educated and respectable fans. They will come back with the right coach just like USC, Bama, and Michigan have after years of mediocrity. ND is one of the 4-5 storied programs in the country.

  • I'm tired of Notre Dame. I'd much rather have a home & home series with a different school every couple of years.

Could you please explain to me how it is that the B1G has kept us on life support? Do you really believe we couldn't have scheduled other quality teams to take the place of those B1G teams we play?

Rutgers maybe? Or maybe we could pull Iowa St from the Big 12.. Iowa Vs Iowa St would be a good rivalry to have. They aren't a bad team, either.

All these teams are mehish. If we bring in ND, we need to be able to bring in VT, Texas, Oklahoma too.

Just curious to see what you Wolverine fans feel about the possibility of the ND/ Michigan series ending. Nothing is definite, but it's a real possibility. I like the series myself. Couple buddies of mine are Michigan fans, and we have a fun time with the games.

Who's saying this is a real possibility?

There are just reports out there saying that it is a possibility, and that a formal announcement could come as early as July 1. It was also said it could be for all sports except football. Lots of reports saying different things. I was just wondering what some of you Wolverine fans thought after some conversations with some UM friends of mine.
