ND possibly to BIG 12

  • Just curious to see what you Wolverine fans feel about the possibility of the ND/ Michigan series ending. Nothing is definite, but it's a real possibility. I like the series myself. Couple buddies of mine are Michigan fans, and we have a fun time with the games.

If Michigan ends it on a 4-5 year win streak, it'd be hard to complain.

I also like it, has become a great rivalvry between traditional powers and would be dissapointed to see it end.

  • Honestly, I'd be very sad. I think ND's our #2 rival, and I love playing them every year. Those ND wins are the only thing that sustained me through the RichRod years. I hope we work out something so we can still keep playing them as an OOC relatively regularly, but I'm not surprised at all that ND is talking about joining a conference, being an independent just isn't viable anymore.

  • The landscape of college football has changed a lot in the last decade. With the potential new playoff system alon with the current B1G title game, I could live without ND.

I think the B1G has helped carry ND for a long time now with regular games vs UofM, MSU, Purdue, as well as the multiple offers to join the conference.

I say let them go to the Big 12. I think it's an awkward partnership, but that's their problem.

MSU isn't a very good football program.. takes year of consistent winning to get to that level. - copemoney 1/22/13

  • Kick out Northwestern, replace them with ND = Big Ten dominance bow

I don't see it happening. ND football will remain independent as long as possible, but if it ever joins a conference it will not be the B12. ND might temporarily park its other sports there, like it did with the Big East, but if it ever joins a conference for football it will be the B10, P12 or ACC.

  • I really wouldn't care. I enjoy the rivalry but I'd move on quickly.

What I don't get is why on earth would ND join the Big12 over the Big10... makes no sense to me.

I seriously doubt ND joins any conference until they are forced into it.

I would kick out a couple schools before Northwestern, like Indiana for example. Northwestern at least is that team that shocks someone in conference every year and they can provide some good matchups.

That being said I like the ND games. I don't see why if they join the Big 12 the game would have to end (they could just schedule us as OOC like we schedule them currently).

Also I remember reading that they would only join a conference when the money outweighs the money they get from being independent (and the tv contract they have). I believe for the Big 10 that would be if we reach 16 teams (with them being the 16th) along with the BTN which brings in a lot of money.

No way.. Indiana is our premier basketball (and soccer) team.

Indiana is the Vanderbilt of the Big Ten (excluding academics). Good at almost every sport except for football.

If Notre Dame doesn't move to the B1G, I'm fine with ending the series. shrug

The question is who would be the 14th member of the B1G if ND joins? Missouri would be a possibility, and things were discussed with them a few years back....Other regional possibilities are Louisville, Pitt, West Virginia, Cincy, Syracuse. Maybe even one of the Virginia schools, or even Boston College if ND comes on board.

Rutgers maybe? Or maybe we could pull Iowa St from the Big 12.. Iowa Vs Iowa St would be a good rivalry to have. They aren't a bad team, either.

If they dont survive as an independant, ND will join B1N when they get out of Big East. Michigan and USC are their biggest rivalry games. They can keep both by joining B1N. They could lose both otherwise. They usually play 4 B1N teams and 2 Pac12. Their entire schedule would flip if they aren't part of the alliance and go elsewhere. B1N states are also important to their recruiting...even though they recruit nationally. There are lots of options for a 16th team.

  • ND has their own agenda. I'm really not interested in them joining the B1G. I don't want the B1G to expand at all. Let all the other conferences play grab-ass with each other. The B1G is stylin' and profilin', we don't need no interlopers.

My honest reaction would be "meh". I have really enjoyed the ND series, but of our three rivalries, it is the least important (i.e. out of conference). And considering we're starting the PAC12/B1G pairings in 2017, I wouldn't mind dropping ND in the OOC schedule. Kind of sad, but a hiatus has been done before. Mabye I just want something different for a while.

  • Not hating on ND or the rivalry, but I would rather lose the matchup than have ND join the Big10.

Any expansion cannot dilute the overall product. Nebraska feels like and is a good fit. ND? Probably not.

I agree, this whole super conference stuff is stupid, some teams won't even play each for 8-10 years because they aren't in the same division within the conference. B1G has the right idea.
