  • Thought the Defensive POY is a tough one. Shazier is second in the Big Ten in total tackles and has made a ton of big plays. Also thought Jake Ryan has played well enough to be in the mix along with John Simon from Ohio State and Anthony Hitchens from Iowa.

  • I can't stand the way Shazier plays. He's led to so many TDs for the other team by completely blowing assignments or missing tackles but those don't end up on the stat sheet.

I would agree with Ryan and Lewan being first team. I think Denard might be on the outside looking in for honors though. And I'm really not sure what you see in Mealer, our interior line play has been absolutely awful.

I think other guys that could potentially gain some honors are Kovacs, Roh, and Washington.

I think Shazier has been outstanding and the play on Montee Ball last week on the 4th and 1 was great. I put Denard in there obviously because of what he was done on the ground before getting injured. I thought Mealer has done his job. The o-line hasn't been great as whole, but Mealer has been the bright spot, along with Lewan. Kovacs has been consistently solid. He could be a second team pick IMO.

  • No offense but I don't know what you see in Mealer either. He has been awful this year and outside of Lewan the whole line has been pretty bad. Also, I agree that Denard won't get on either the first and second team with Martinez/Braxton taking those two spots. I could see Kovacs getting some love though for sure.

So who is left out, Braxton or Martinez?

Shazier makes big plays but he makes huge mistakes. It's a high risk high reward type of scenario.

Can't say I agree with Shazier as DPOY. As said above, he plays undisciplined at this point in his career; high risk/high reward. Gives us plays he shouldn't but then also makes some very good plays. I don't remember anyone talking about Jonas Mouton as a DPOY candidate in 2010; he led the entire conference in tackles that year (yes I know, hard to believe as I didn't think anybody tackled on the defense). But like Shazier, Mouton also had a bi-polar tendency to make great plays and then give up stupid big gains (my favorite nickname I heard for him was 'Janus' Mouton). The smarter choice is John Simon, both the sack and TFL leader in the conference, plus generally a guy you have to game plan around. Kawann Short is also a good choice, but the fact that the D he plays for is just crap has depressed his total tackle stats, although his TFLs and sacks are still impressive for a DT.

As for Mealer, he's been OK; don't think he's been the biggest problem, but I still think 2nd team all conference is a reach. The reason we have no run game is because of our interior OL.

  • Yeah, not as big a fan of Shazier at this point, though I think he will be fantastic. I think Simon has been more important for that team by far. I dont think any of our guys has been so outstanding on defense to be POY. On offense...I would probably pick Braxton over Martinez, but that is a coin flip.

I agree Mealer wouldn't have made my list of conference performers, maybe all conference at press conferences.

  • OSU fan here. The complaints about shazier are completely on point... for the first half of the year. The second half he has been almost mistake free and has done a much better job of breaking down and not going for the big hit every time. If he played the whole year like he has played the second half he would definitely be the DPOY. But it is a full season.

I think Shazier is fantastic, but he needs someone like Sabino to ground him. When it's both Sabino and Shazier (or even Shazier and Boren the previous two games), Shazier is free to roam which is what he excels at. He'll never be the consistent, hold your position, stay disciplined type of LB. Shazier is a playmaker. I'd love to see him with someone like Mike Mitchell (if we get him this year), who is your more prototypical, play disciplined type of ILB.

  • DPOY this year is probably Michael Mauti, from Penn State. Sad to see him go down last week on Saturday because he is a phenomenal player.
