Morris Talks Top Michigan Targets

Michigan QB commit Shane Morris is putting in work on the recruiting trail, and he gives thoughts on where the Wolverines stand with targets like Joe Mathis (pictured).

  • This day in age you have to have some of your commits recruiting other kids! We have Sugar Shane leading that front and he is GOOD if not the best! I seriously think he is one of our best recruiters! Keep it up Shane!!! Those who stay will be champions and Go Blue!

  • I've lost optimism for Treadwell a long time ago. I've been saying we lost him when we parted ways with Standifer. But I think we got Ty tho. Unless Green beat him to the punch like Smith did. GO BLUE!!!!

  • Great stuff here Steve! Morris has been invaluable as a recruiter already, and I'm sure he'll continue to be. Landing an elite in-state quarterback with his personality and passion for the program so early in the process was literally a dream scenario for Michigan.

  • Regarding Morris, one thing I just thought about is that he'll likely be selected as a host for as many official visits as possible during his career at Michigan.

I was thinking about that same thing earlier. I was wondering how that would compare to Shane being able to recruit the way he can now for Michigan. If I understand correctly once he officially becomes a Wolverine he can't have contact with recruits outside of them visiting Michigan right? What are some of your guys thoughts on how much impact Shane can have being a host for future recruits?

  • Shane is clearly the MAN, without a doubt. But let's not overlook the efforts put in by other recruits LTT, Bosch, Taco, Hill, Dawson, Kugler. Even the guys that are behind the scenes a little bit still make up the 134 family. Someone had pointed out about Mathis visiting Nebraska is nothing to take lightly, but when he meets their two commits after hanging out with 7 or so of ours this weekend and talking to any of the 16 via twitter or text, our family has a huge advantage. We can't take for granted how much this collective group means to recruiting our remaining targets.goblue

Once he's enrolled at Michigan, the coaches can't arrange communication between him and a recruit other than on-campus visits. But if a current player wants to, they're allowed to reach out on their own to any recruit at any time.

Great post, and you're absolutely right - a number of the commits have already proven their value on the recruiting trail. Since this thread was about Morris, I was just focusing on him for the purpose of this thread. But he's by no means the only commit that has helped Michigan on the recruiting trail.

Wait, but wasn't there some sort of kerfuffle involving Roy Roundtree and Mike McCray earlier this year? Also, I think there was a similar situation at ND involving a Florida recruit. Weren't there concerns about some sort of NCAA violation because Roy reached out and tweeted congratulations to McCray?

As far as I can see, it seems like the NCAA draws the line at semi-public/public communication between enrolled players and recruits. I would imagine texting/calling would be fine, but given the tremendous impact of twitter on Team 134 v. the NCAA stance on communications, it seems like there is a limit to how much Shane (or any other player) could reach out to recruits.

I'm honestly not familiar with the Roundtree-McCray situation. But if you think about it, a lot of those guys were high school teammates, played against each other in high school, knew each other from this combine or that camp, etc. The NCAA can't regulate conversations between friends. My understanding is that as long as the school doesn't arrange/encourage the conversation, it's perfectly fine.
