  • I question the 230, but he looks really athletic. Good ball and cover skills for a LB. He also gets through traffic well.

  • Boys...thats a LB. Period. Once he gets in a college SC program...oh gurl. He's never gonna be the greatest athlete, you can look at a kid on film and tell who is a football player and who isn't.

Really instinctive reminds me of Larry Johnson in basketball, always in the right place, fills the stat sheet, probably the best athlete on the court/field, but somehow he just blends right in. When your throwing slants to your middle linebacker it's pretty impressive. Would like to see a little more physical, but he is very well schooled in his football and his instincts make him look rather seamless in making plays.

Mike Mitchell wishes he had that kind of football IQ

Mitchell would be an All-American if he had Mccray's football instincts and IQ.

I'm so glad our staff knows what's up. I'd take a less athletic, high football IQ LBer than a high athletic, low football IQ LBer anyday of the week.

Mitchell is an interesting prospect. I feel like he wasn't on anybody's radar until he put up great numbers during combines like the SPARQ score. Certainly has the physical skills; wonder I'd he'll put it together on the field. Hopefully he doesn't.

I think he will. Mike Vrabel is a good coach, and should be able to mold Mitchell into a very good LBer.

  • That film is very impressive. If he can get more athletic (which is reasonable because he'll be coming off an injury), he'll be an awesome LB. Really excited for him!

Steve, what do you think of his game and where he fits best in college? SAM?

  • McCray better become a star in college because I want to hear Brent Musburger yell "THAT SH*T CRAY!" after some truly bone-jarring hits.

Is he? I mean I guess I haven't done an in depth analysis of OSU LBs, but over the last two years they seem quite undisciplined.

I think that's more a product of one or two headcases and a lack of depth making it seem like a large percentage of their LBs are off the rails.

Shazier has done fine, Sabino was acceptable, Boren was pretty good for a fill-in. The problems really stemmed mainly from Curtis Grant and Storm Klein.

Meh, OSU has had a lot of unfortunate things happen with their LBers, can't really blame that all on Vrabel. That Crowell guy (now transferred) got badly injured, Grant didn't pan out, Klien had his GF beating situation.. etc. He eventually had to start Boren at MLB, and he actually did pretty well. Shazier also had a good season. I think once OSU has stability with their LB situation, they'll be ok.

Athleticism isn't lacking. He was splitting out at WR and making plays on the ball.

He needs to add good weight. There's no way he's 230 right now.

To me he looks like he's going half speed except right when he makes hits. After some of the plays were over, he looked downright lethargic. Maybe it's because of the injury. Still, even going half speed, he gets space when playing WR which is impressive. I agree with all the comments about instinctiveness and IQ. It seems to me that the routes he takes to the ball carrier could hardly be any better when looking from a birds eye view. I'm also very impressed by his power and how he fights through blockers so effectively to make tackles. I also like how business-like he is...no woofing, no excessive celebrating, respectful to the refs. I guess that may go hand in hand with my observation of lethargy after the play, but I think it's more than that.

Nah, the business-like thing is a hallmark of a lot of Michigan recruits under Hoke. You look at gametape of guys like Deveon Smith, Jake Butt, Shane Morris, and there isn't a lot of excessive celebration. Even among the WRs, the most diva-prone position, there are some business-like players. It's one of the first things I noticed about Corey Holmes' tape - even after TDs, he just hands the ball to the nearest ref. Pretty much personifies the "act like you've been there before" mentality.

  • Love this kid. I don't think we ever have to worry about our LB situation with this coaching staff.

  • I'm really happy with the two LB's we got in this class. They may not jump off the charts at testing combines (OSU mitchell) but they are just straight up football players. They do it all for their teams. They both are very instinctive and know the game well which isn't a surprise considering they both come from football families. What I love the most is they both come from hUrbies back yard. He will be sorry in a couple years he stuck his nose up and waited to offer.
