Mike McCray Announcing March 8th

  • richardparker10 said...

Levenberry looks like a Michigan get to me, but that's just by evaluating his commentary.

There's no question that McCray has to be very disappointed with OSU. His dad played there, he wanted to play there, Burrows from his team is going there and guys ranked well below him are getting offers. I feel bad for him. Then again, the guy is about to be a hero on a big time football campus wherever he goes. Most of us mortals never even sniffed an athletic scholarship to a DIII school.

True. Disappointment definitely is a relative term.

FWIW, and this is not intended as a flame, but McCray's also a perfect example of the type of Ohio kid who ends up at Michigan and plays with a chip on his shoulder because he wants to prove OSU wrong. Joe Bolden is another. I think Urbie reached out to Bolden late, but other than that OSU showed no interest. He also was passed over by ND, another one of his childhood favorites, who told him he was too short. At 6"2"-3", his height clearly is not an issue, but I guarantee he will remember that comment every time he suits up against the Domers in the coming years

  • Well, and part of it is the 'speed factor'. Urban is looking for smaller, faster LBs, much like he had at Florida. McCray doesn't really fit that mold.

The question really becomes whether Urban can make it work, or he falls into the RichRod trap.

Speed does appear to be the most important attribute to Meyer, though I'm sure he'd love a big, fast guy over a small, fast one on D. Love, Gedeon and Smith all are 6'1"+ which should do the trick. My guess is that beyond his speed, Love's aggressiveness gets Meyer excited, as well.

I'm not worried about the RichRod trap. In my mind, Meyer is a better defensive than offensive coach even though he gets all his props for his offense. RichRod was prolific on offense but completely flailed on D. RR never was known for great Ds at WVU that I can recall and that was the Big East. Let's also not forget that besides facing quality offenses in the SEC, Meyer actually has worked at OSU and ND before so has the Northern, Big 10 experience and should have a good understanding for what it takes to win here. We won't know for sure until we see a team hit the field, though.

  • I'm worried about this commitment, while at the same time, I feel confident if he commits he'll stay committed.

As most have said, he's a legacy at ohio, his teammate is going there, and he wanted to go there but got no offer. If he gets that offer and his teammate/dad start getting in his ear, I feel like he could flip.

On the other hand, Michigan turned down Sevon Pittman's commitment because of the fact they thought he'd flip to osu once Meyer got there (you can tell he wasn't sold on msu by his comments: "I just figured, why not msu?"). I think the staff will do some due diligence to protect against that and make sure Michigan is his choice. Not sure about his connection with other UM commits. Last year, guys like Kalis and Bolden were clearly like brothers in the GBOD crew with the other commits. Is McCray tight with anyone? I've seen Taco and Dukes mentioned.

That's fair, and I don't blame them, though I spend a lot more time worrying about the Woodsons, Howards and Mannighams of the world abandoning their roots to head North. How could they?!!!

  • I heard this kid has crazy athletic ability. Who cares what Ohio is doing.

I know Urban has won 2 NC n all. And that commands respect. But a lot of his moves are sure reminding me of RR.

FWIW didn't Ohio not offer Levenberry? I guess he must not be elite, either.

I've never been to Detroit, although I don't doubt it's putrid.

But Columbus seriously smells like hot garbage. Literally. Rats and gnats everywhere. Nice areas a block away from drugs and hookers. It's pretty much filth.

I don't want to beat a dead horse on this, but these RR/Meyer comparisons for the Ds just don't make much sense. The CBs we have for the 2013 class alone are 6'1" and 6'2", for instance. That's probably bigger than the RR LBs and DEs. Then there's last year's DL, who.... oh never mind....

OSU did offer Levenberry. Congrats in advance.

Blocks away from drugs and hookers? I'm headed to the airport now! You throw that catch-phrase up in a tv commercial and people will be flocking, I assure you. Kidding. Having been to both Columbus and Detroit I would have to pick Columbus as the nicer city by a far margin.

My brother used to live in Detroit and I have to admit I had a great time going out on the town when I visited him. Walking around certainly is not an option, though, and there definitely was a focus on getting to the car fast. My father stayed downtown one time for business. He walked outside the hotel and a cop stopped him and said, "What are you doing?" He replied, "I was just going to take a walk around the block to get some fresh air." The officer replied, "You'll never make it."

Cleveland is horrible. My parents lived in Cincy for a few years and I liked it down there.

Ah, now you're talking about my roots. Of course, by now you know about the best selling point for the city... if you don't, just wait for the end of this video:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZzgAjjuqZM&feature=related

The reality is, though, that Cleveland actually was a great place to grow up. The city itself has essentially everything someone could need and punches above its weight in sports and arts options. The ring around it is scary, then the suburbs are extremely nice.

  • I lived in Columbus for 8 years. Cooke Rd is a great example. Getting off of I-71 there are Million dollar homes. Go down the block to Karl Rd and Cleveland Ave and it is gangs, drugs, and hookers.

Columbus has cool things, too. The zoo around christmas time, Cosi, Polaris, Easton, etc... Overall it is still a nasty city.

    I'm not disputing Detroit.

I've actually only been to Michigan for football games and once to Traverse City on vacation.

Ha, sounds like my block in NYC. A bunch of Hollywood stars like Blake Lively and Anne Hathaway live or have lived in my building. Walk down the street and its packed with transi hookers. Now if you guys want to get tall, jacked linebackers for your class, that's the place to recruit. I think a few even have SEC speed.

I have lived all over, including Columbus currently, grew up in Detroit. Lived in Manhattan, DC, Chicago...ultimately all those cities are like that.

People make more out of these things when they have never been there. That said, downtown Detroit does kind of suck...but the suburbs are better the Cbus suburbs.

  • Am not understanding the Detroit commentary unless it's the east side. Am originally from Jamaica (so my perspective will be a tad different, shall we say) yet have family and have spent plenty of time in northwest Detroit. Specifically on Mettetal, off of Schoolcraft. Think it was between Rutherford and St. Mary.

I was more wary of those big @ss squirrels than I was worried about being accosted for anything.

Have discussed RR's defenses at WVU ad infinitum, and they were always average to above average statiscally (although many do not like Gibson). That being said, one must also recall that recruiting at West Virginia is quite different than recruiting at Ohio State. They HAD to use 'tweeners because it was hell attracting talent there - and the 3-3-5 was a way of both defending against the spread and getting his most talented players on the field.

Regardless, am curious to see precisely what Urban's recruiting strategy will be at Ohio State. I refuse to believe that he'll "pass" over talent in Ohio for talent elsewhere (and for anyone stating that RR "passed" over talent in Michigan in favor of talent in Florida, bullcrap. One, he had Carr's cronies actively undermining his attempts to recruit IN Michigan; in addition, the numbers he pulled from Michigan were not drastically different from previous recruiting classes. Also his attempts were thwarted by MSU homers at different feeder schools in Michigan (Fred Smith, William Gholson, the DT that was out of shape at first then went to Ohio State, and Lawrence Thomas)).

Went to school on old Cooke Rd. You went the wrong direction for sure-probably toward Northern Lights area. Cleveland Ave is the ghetto for sure all 10 miles of it. I been to Detroit once as a kid. I enjoyed it but I do remember being in a hurry walking to Tiger Stadium downtown.

Finalists for McCray are Michigan and TN. Belief is that TN is more likely.

Ohio State told McCray they weren't ever going to offer. The staff likes Courtney Love more. I don't know what this implies in terms of the perceived chances with Smith.

That's an usual statement, "the staff told McCray they weren't ever going to offer." Why would a staff come out and directly tell a legacy that?

Because their staff doesn't care about pleasing their alumni/Ohio HS coaches.

Those are my words. I'm sure the staff was plenty respectful and eloquent, but of course I wasn't there and wasn't privy to the conversation. Personally, I like McCray's tape. My guess is given the timing we'll see a LB commit to OSU within the next month or so, though that's merely my suspicion.
