Michigan/Indiana Game Thread

There's no ifs and but about it, this loss is a ball-buster, a heartbreaker, whichever way you wanna put it. The way the team lost is probably worse than the L itself. Think about it, Burke wanted that ball, he wanted to be fouled, he wanted to hit the FTs to win it. The fact he didn't get the one even, it's discouraging, disheartening in every sense. For him, for us. There was a banner on the line, there was a legacy on the line, there were awards on the line, there was pride on the line.

You can't fault Beilein for this, a terrible coach wouldn't put the team in position to beat one of the two best teams in the country. At the end the team played well enough but the flaws you mention made sure to make it an "almost" signature moment and "almosts" are the worst sorts of failures, the ones that haunt you.

And Michigan will have a chance to get over this loss by playing in the B1G Tournament.

I'm almost certain Coach Beilein reminded his kids (after the loss) that in the grand scheme of things the NCAAT is much more important than winning the conference regular season championship.

Over the course of NCAAT history, there have many great teams that won their conference regular season but didn't even make the Final Four. Hence, those seasons are generally regarded as disappointments. The goal was the Final Four and beyond.

Michigan can redeem itself by getting to the Final Four. All that matters now is the NCAAT.

Let's face the reality of it, everyone's bracket will have us lose in the 2nd round at the latest and you can't really blame them. This team is bad at *everything* that people usually consider vital for playoff success: defense, rebounding, late game clutchness.

At this point, Sweet Sixteen is basically what we should dare to hope for, but definitely can't expect.

Well i completely disagree. I fully expect the Sweet Sixteen at the very least. In no way does this loss make me think this team can't make a final four run.

  • I agree.

The Sweet 16 is the minimum expectation for me.

Even if we fall to a 4 seed (which seems unlikely), we won't face a team more talented than us until the Sweet 16.

And this Michigan team has enough talent to get past the first weekend on talent alone.

Right now, Michigan is a 3 seed. We can fall to a 4 seed or rise to a 2 seed. But there is actually little difference between being a 2 seed and a 3 seed.

    In the 2nd round, a 2 seed plays a 7 seed and a 3 seed plays a 6 seed. In the sweet 16, a 2 seed plays a 3 seed.

    In 2009, every Sweet 16 was a 2/3 match-up. The 3 seed won 3 of the 4 match-ups.

Over the past 3 years, only twice (out of 12 regionals) has there been a 2/3 match-up in the Sweet 16.

  • so do you think winning the big ten tourney would help or hurt this team?

    Pro= better seed, confidence

Con= be tired as hell before the NCAAT

Help. This team needs to gel and become more consistent. We have shown the past few games that we can play defense at a high level but it needs to be done more consistently. With as young as we are I think getting this team confident and feeling good is important.

    That's a good question.

I've seen it be debated pretty much ever year around this time. Ultimately, it comes down to preference since the brackets are built upon the results of the conference tournaments.

Consider this: say we win the B1G Tournament.
We could end up being a 2 seed in a tough bracket with adverse match-ups.

Conversely, say we lose in the semifinals.
We could end up being a 3 seed in an easier bracket with more favorable match-ups (and, therefore, have an easier path to the Final Four).

That said, I'm in favor of trying to win the brutal B1G Tournament because it will prepare this team to make a run in the NCAAT.

  • Winning the B1G means this team won 4 games in 4 days and will likely have beaten Wisconsin/Indiana and MSU/OSU to do it. That'd be a ton of momentum going into the tournament; something these guys need right now. That'd be a huge plus if they win it.

  • I do not like Tom Crean at all. I dislike him more than any coach in any sport. I respect Indiana as a basketball program but i will be rooting hard for them to go down as early as possible in the tourney.

  • I want all the B1G teams NCAAT teams to do well (i.e. at least get to the Sweet 16) but I hope only Michigan gets to the Final Four.

I dont mind him. I like that he wants his players to bang inside and rebound the rock.

  • I haven't taken the time to read through this thread, so it has probably been said a million times already, but when you can't rebound, you negate everything that you do well. If this team could rebound, they would be elite. All our losses this season have come down to two things: rebounding and defense. In my opinion, the defensive intensity has picked up over the last couple weeks. The rebounding, on the other hand, has remained atrocious. You simply cannot expect to beat good teams when you can't rebound.

The thing that is so frustrating to me is that rebounding is a pretty basic, fundamental aspect of the game. It is something than anyone can do; you don't have to be a great athlete or a great talent to rebound the effing basketball. It involves two steps: identify your man and box out. That is it; nothing more, nothing less. When it comes to rebounding, this team is just lazy and undisciplined. There's really no excuse for it since, like I said, it is not a matter of talent.

    Crean yelling

What a dope that guy is. Whatever your issue is with Meyer, it takes a clown of considerable proportion to do that at that time in that place.

Here's the one potentially redeeming thing from all of this: Unlike in football, this wasn't the beginning of the end, this was the end of the beginning. This group still has time to show the doubters and negative nancies like myself and give ole Tom Crean a lemon (and some other things) to suck on.

    UMSkeletor

  • Starting to literally think something is mentally wrong with the team and staff. Do they really not care about rebounding? Indiana actually crashed the glass hardcore. Morgan just waves his hand. Team's ceiling is sweet 16 but I wouldn't be surprised to see them lose before depending on matchup. -21 rebounding!!!

Crean to Meyer: You know what you did. You helped wreck that program.

    ---

Crean was accusing Meyer (who was an assistant under Kelvin Sampson) of destroying Indiana's basketball program.

IMO, Indiana winning its first Big Ten regular season title in 20 years inflated Crean's ego and he got caught up in the moment. Crean wanted Meyer to know that Indiana was back.

    ---

But Crean better watch what he says.

I don't know what Meyer did but Crean's not exactly the most ethical guy.

  • Regardless of Michigan short falls yesterday ( rebounding, making free throws, defensivie brain farts) they still played a damn good game in my mind and made it a game. 2 made free throws and a made finger roll or put back and we are talking about this diffrent.

I look for us to do good things in the B1G tourny and the NCAAT.

Winning is never a bad thing imo. At 19 and 20 years old fatique shouldn't be a problem unless they are poorly condtioned... and I don't believe that.

The thing is, this team should have overcome the rebounding deficit. Everyone would agree Michigan should have won that game (had they made their free throws). The ending to the game had nothing to do with the rebounding.

Michigan has now lost 6 games, and can probably blame three on themselves for shooting themselves in the foot. Yes, one can say they have difficulty closing out games, which could lead to an early exit in the tournament. Likewise, you could say this close to being a 3-loss team that can beat any team in the country.

  • I hope I don't sound too optimistic here, and if I, feel free to yell at me. But I honestly don't mind this team getting the 5 seed. Hopefully, they can get their s*** together this week, beat PSU, get revenge on Wisconsin, and have some momentum against Indiana.

Also, looking at the bracketology, Michigan would be in a great 3 seed, with Gonzaga as the 1, and Miami as the 2.

  • Lose to PSU - 5 seed
    Win one - 3
    Win Semi - 2
    Win Final - 1

    Pretty simple.
