Michigan vs. Wisconsin Open Thread

  • We could've potentially went a game up on the conference while pushing UW back in the pack. Now in an ideal situation w/ Purdue & Ohio (Ugh) winning we would be mired in a 5-way tie for first. That doesn't leave any margin for error these last 7 games.

I haven't seen any one team seperate themselves, but I've seen that this team isn't the *one* either. A lot of teams have flaws but I feel the flaws we have: 1) experience and mentality, "coldness" if you wish (2) inside game (3) defense are flaws that usually make it very, very difficult to win four plus knockout games in a row.

Our on-ball defense is a growing concern for me. I can understand OSU's athletes getting into the paint, but even Wisconsin seemed capable of driving past any defender. When we help in the paint, we have difficulty recovering and are allowing wide open shots.

  • Michigan went to the line twice the entire game, just cant happen. I love Belien but I think his big flaw, especially in the big ten is his offensive mind set. He would rather play small and jack up shots from outside. Sure I love the three but his philosophy shows up in the paint when we constantly can not finish around the rim; we look timid. The one thing I love about Izzo is he wants to play smash mouth we will dominate in side kind of basketball. I played the 5 in HS so thats always been my philosophy as well. Pound it in side, make the D collapse, kick it out out for easy looks. Im tired of this one on one step back NBA three crap and im tired of letting the other team get 2nd and 3rd put back shots. Rebounding is all about heart, this team has gotta get it in the paint.

  • Wisky fan here. Surprised at the amount of hand-wringing going on here. Badgers played one of their better games of the year. I don't think You should judge your season against Wisconsin. Due to our style that we play, we keep pretty much every game we had. Physical game with questionable coaching calls on both sides of the court. I'm not ignorant enough to pretend that we ha quite a few calls go our way. I do want to wish you luck, lots of respect for Coach B from Badgernation and I'm pulling for you guys more than any other BIG team besides us. He's a class act. Good luck and hopefully see you in Indy!

  • My quick pointers from today's game, then I'm moving on and never thinking about what just happened again:

-John Beilein deserves the blame for this loss. I thought his excuse for why Caris didn't foul was BS. Caris could've reached out. If he didn't know what to do in that situation, don't put a true freshman on the floor. Pathetic all around. Also, THJ bailed him out in making the 3 at the end of regulation, but the fact that Beilein doesn't draw up any plays at the end of these games is a joke. Run something, anything. Don't tell Burke to heave a 3, or pass it to THJ to heave a 3. In March, that won't cut it.

-Because I'm irrational after losses, McGary's miss on that steal negated his entire game IMO. I thought it was the best he's played all year, and I couldn't believe he was knocking down those 10 foot jumpers, but from the second he stole that ball he looked timid going down the floor. He was trying to not mess up, instead of scoring the ball. Obviously he should've dunked it. Either way, you don't miss that layup. That was inexcusable and probably cost us the game.

-Nik Stauskas broke my dresser today. Every time he rebounds the ball under the rim, he looks frazzled and makes the worst decision possible. Once again today, he got frazzled on the rebound and allowed Wisco to force a turnover. Same thing happened at a crucial point in the game @ IU. That turnover was as frustrated as I've been all season.

-GRIII does not deserve to enter the draft, and he does not deserve to be drafted. He will still be a 1st round projection due to his upside, but I will lose a lot of respect for him if he leaves after this year. He has been a liability for this team the past few weeks.

-We need Jordan Morgan back ASAP. We look much better with him on the floor.

-We can't score the ball in overtime. Not sure how much we scored at IU, but I think it was 5 points. If I remember correctly, I believe we scored 2 in overtime today. Our entire game plan changes in overtime, which I also blame on Beilein. We seem to let the shot clock dwindle down and have Burke chuck up a 3. We need to stop resorting to outside jumpers when the game matters most.

  • I still think Beilein's grave mistake was not placing McGary to guard the inbound pass. Yes, Levert should have fouled Brust, but the chances Brust gets such a look drastically declines had we chosen to guard the inbounds. He was able to catch the ball in stride, and turned to the basket pretty easily. It was a tough shot, but it could have been much harder. McGary could have made it much harder for the inbounder to find Brust cutting across mid court.

I'm not going to put the blame on Belien for our guys not getting fouled. That's on the players for shying away from contact. Especially Burke and Hardaway. Both should be better at getting to the line.

I felt like we did this from around the 4 min mark or so in regulation. Started to really slow down the game. I thought there were a few times in the last couple of minutes in regulation and in OT where we could of gotten out in transition and got a couple easy buckets but Burke decided to slow it down and set up the offense. No idea why they would do that.

  • This just in: UMhoops is a great website. They offer a tremendous recap of today's game (as usual) and the commenters over there, whoever they are, offer further analysis/points I had not yet seen. One comment pointed out Beilein's lack of TO's called, which I found very interesting. Check it out if you want more glimpses of adjustments and optimism for the future of this season.

Missing Morgan is huge against tough teams like this. The other bigs actually played some decent minutes, but were useless on the offensive end.
