  • I think McDowell is the #1 prospect on the coaches board, he is a monster I sort of hope he stays at DE because of his size and athleticism is so special.

After watching McDowell a few times in person, I think he fits in better at defensive end as well.

  • Thank you, I have been wanting an update on him for awhile. #1 target in my eyes when looking at the competition for him.

Like that he grew up a fan, and the academics is so important to him.

  • I've posted this before, but figured I'd post it again for anyone who hasn't seen it. For those of you that are unfamiliar with Detroit Loyola's program, NFL Films recently did a short documentary on it. As you'll see, there are some great kids that come through that program and their coach is truly special.

I would love for Mattison to run the defense he thinks is best

Why? A 4-3 allows every position along the d-line and lb to shine, especially at rushing the passer. In a 3-4 the LBs are the focal pt when it comes to rushing the QB, while the d line occupy the line. Our recruiting along the line and backers should have you excited for a 4-3.

  • A defensive lineman in a 3-4 is a very unglorified position. You are pretty much a space eater to allow the linebackers to make plays. The 4-3 Under scheme allows the whole front 7 to attack, or at least whoever is left one on one. If I was a defensive lineman I would not want to play in a 3-4 D.

Because we have a true NT in PeeWee and our LB group will be our strength in the forseeable future. Plus Im a Steelers fan and it has worked for them for a long time.

You do realize that the 4-3 under that you love so much is really the same defensive formation as a 3-4. As for dlinemen not wanting to play in a 3-4 Alabama doesnt seem to have any problems getting elite ones.

Well, that is why you'll see Jake Ryan slide down to end on occasion. It is also why super athletic WDE's like Ojemudia are being recruited, sometimes they'll end be standing up, sometimes they'll be a down linemen. There was also a really good write-up on this sometime ago on MGoBlog:

[Ed-S: Festivus Bump!] In modern football, there are 2 popular base defensive sets. Most teams run either a 3-4 Base or a 4-3 Base.

Oh I'm not saying you're wrong. You can definitely see that recruiting for the 4-3 under and 3-4 are very similar, and both can accomplish similar goals because the personnel are very alike. I'm excited to see how Jake Ryan performs in his second year in the defense, he is going to be used in so many different ways.

If you listen to Mattison in the pressers, he talks about Ryan in regards to the dline more than anywhere else.

  • Wonder who is telling him that he will end up at DT at Michigan. Wouldn't be surprised if Dantonio is negative recruiting the crap outta us.

I'm aware of the similarities, but why do you want to run a 3-4 if we already run "the same defensive formation"? And to be honest Bama gets elite linebackers, not DL. Jesse Williams is the only 5 star DL theyve gotten in past few years. And we arent "arguing", we are having a civil discussion on a premium message board. 17ish days till game day, we gotta talk about something.
