Michigan is pressuring recruits to commit early.(sarcasm)

  • I have read a lot about how our coaches are giving commits the hard sell and pressuring them to commit early. This is 100% true. How do I know?..I can see it with my own eyes. I don’t have a problem with them doing this.
There is also a lot of talk about us filling up early and how that is bad…well…this is in the eye of the beholder.

The coaches want people who want to play for Michigan…Correct? So they go out and target the recruits they want to play for Michigan and whom they feel can help them win the BIG. We have (X) number of spots…each recruit that commits cuts down on the amount we have…this is not rocket science, this puts more emphasis on the spots we do have left. If a recruit sees that we are filling up fast and we are filling up fast with highly regarded guys . They will feel some form of pressure to make a decision to be part of something that has a potential of being great. Coaches are NOT directly pressuring recruits…because they are good at that they do and are honest in doing it, they are creating the situation that is creating the pressure in and of itself.

Loading up early…well, that just adds to the situation where recruits could feel pressure to be a part of something great, it puts more emphasis on the spots we do have left...which is why other schools are paying close attention to "how many we can take" in this class. It's almost as if they are waiting for us to be done eating so they can find a place at the recruiting table.

I also like being at the #1 spot, if only for a brief moment. It puts us in view of every recruit on a national level…it raises an eyebrow in a way that recruits may want to check out what Michigan is doing, even if they had no previous interest. Because no matter who you are, you cant deny that there is something great happening here

  • The coaches are not pressuring them to commit, simple as that. They aren't saying if you don't commit now you lose your scholarship so they aren't being forced to commit. The other recruits are the ones putting pressure on them to commit because of the spots, as you mentioned.

Because our coaches are good at what they do, the end result is the situation itself that creates the pressure, they don't have to directly pressure anyone, we dont have to pull scholis...the situation works itself out. I think that other commits and social media are our friends...it creates a bonding before they even walk through the doors toghetherbiggrin

  • It's not pressuring them to commit, it's being completely honest about the numbers of spots left. Is it pressuring if the conversation with Kugler went something like this: "Patrick, we would absolutely love you in this class, but we are only taking one more OL. We had Pocic in last week and he's interested, Clin McGovern is coming for a visit soon, we are still looking at film on a local kid named Dillard, and we are in touch with some other prospects as well. S keep in touch with us because even though we'd love to have you, we aren't going to turn away one of those guys if they want the spot."

If they didn't say stuff like this , they'd get blasted down the road for "pulling offers" when a kid tried to commit and was told they couldnt anymore.

  • I have edited the title...Maybe it is too early on a Sunday morning for sarcasm...I know we are not pulling offers or anything like that..all I was saying is that If a kid has an offer and and he sees others jumping on board, they want to be part of something great and they commit as well. They want to get in where they fit in....thats all.

I think once again we are arguing semantics, but I agree with wingman. I agree with you that the coaches are just being honest, but I agree with wingman that the honesty is about a situation that creates pressure. I think it's a good life lesson. Opportunities generally have windows. Sometimes there are second chances after the windows have closed, but quite often there aren't.

  • LOL.

Michigan also is telling their recruits that once they commit, they can't visit anywhere else. They are also telling them NOT to commit unless they can abide by that rule.

All this whining from down south is pretty sad.

  • cry cry cry ohio can cry me and JT a river. Obviously the recruits are responding positively to this "tactic" otherwise they wouldn't be committing. Also it seems like every recruit's reason is because they and their parents fell in love with our coaches and A2 or they couldn't imagine being anywhere better.....i.e (Bosch, LTT, Kugler, Dymonte, Shane, Fox....oh wait....virtually all of them) clap. ohio fans are just pissed because they're gettin hammer. Can't wait for September to get here so the ass kicking can commence.

  • I think our recruiting is sending multiple messages at once nationally without saying a word. Its a new day in Ann Arbor. Other teams only have a limited amount of time to get their S@#! together....good luckcoffee

  • "I can see it with my own eyes."

The coaches are not pressuring anyone. Winners want to play with winners. When you have leaders on both sides of the ball (Offense - Shane, Defense - Dymonte), other winners are naturally attracted to them. From the coaches, to proven leaders already recruited, to the academics of the University, recruits have a compelling case to commit. As the express gains steam, winners can see other winners hoping onboard. This compels them to make quicker decisions, as spots are limited. Michigan was once a great engine churning talent to the pros. You have coaches - on staff, which have done this before, AND coached in the NFL. The winners want to get to the next level. they understand who can get them to this spot. Kruger's commit tells alot to me. His dad coaches in the pros. Do you think he does not understand the importance of previous pro coaching experience for his son?

Your post sounds like an MSU slappy crying and looking for excuses why UM is spanking them on the recruiting trail.

This is an underrated comment. I was thinking about Kugler's dad last night and his influence on his son's decision considering Mattison's NFL experience.

  • Frankly, we're in a new era of recruiting. 8 years ago, a lot of players finished their Senior year of high school, took 4 or 5 visits and made a decision. Now players are insulted if they are not offered by January/February of their junior year. Fortunately, we have a coaching staff that understands this and works their tails off in order to evaluate players earlier than our competition.

  • I would always prefer to fill it earlier than later. Then we can make strong bonds on future recruits sooner than others. It's nothing but a win-win situation. It also gives our coaches more time during the season to focus on the actual season and make necessary adjustments. I don't see any negatives about this strategy at all. Above all else it pisses our rivals off. Kudos to us. goblue

  • Anybody here work in sales? I do and the best closers are the ones who know how to apply the pressure. Now the product has to be good and sell itself, otherwise you will just end up with a bunch of refunds (decommits) but I sure hope Hoke is pressuring the kids. That's how it works in the real world.

  • Garnishing trust, commitment, and understanding from a 16/17 year old is not "... the real world." Michigan coaches do not need to apply pressure to these kids. As I have stated previously, winners want to play with winners. It is that simple.peace

Wingman, I dont understand recruiting at all....can you elaborate on your concepts? Like if there's only 2 LB spots left and there are 5 recruits interested, that puts pressure due to the limited availability.....NO WAY BRO, I WOULD HAVE NEVER GUESSED THAT. YOU SHOULD RIGHT A BOOK ON RECRUITING.

I agree, its best to fill the class earlier on, and in addition to your logical comments 59, filling a class early presents a compelling dynamic, which is currently ongoing. The coaches were able to fill the 2012 class relatively early on, and were subsequently able to concentrate not only on the remaining '12 prospects, but also identify their needs for the 2013 class more keenly. This attention which started last summer and continues today is part of the reason why there have been so many early commits, bc the coaches were able to start the recruiting process for these kids earlier then most others because 2012 was in good shape. Now the 2013 class is going to be mostly filled by the summer again, and the process will begin over as the coaches will have more time to concentrate efforts with the 2014 kids. This is already happening with recent 2014 kids visiting campus. Its easy to get a kid on campus, but now the coaches will be able to communicate more frequently with 2014 prospects because they have less targets in the 2013 class to pursue bc of how many have already committed. So filling a class earlier is a win win.
