Michigan is done with 2013 OL recruits

  • The staff today told Cameron Hunt that there is no more room for Offensive Linemen.

  • Why did we even open it back up? It occurred to me.. We pretty much shut out Ethan Pocic, only to open back up and accept Dan Samuelson. What changed in the coaches mind that we needed another OL?

  • Just hope he doesn't go to OSU.

Sounds like Green and then Smythe or bust. I'd like us to pursue Carrington as well but the coaches haven't been interested in a non-Treadwell WR.

You assume the coaches haven't reached out to WRs and that's where you are mistaken Top flight WRs just arent interested in UM. Outside of Devon Allen no top WRs sniffed the campus. The coaches can do all the reaching out but interest has to be reciprocated. Steve and Clint won't publish a report saying WR xyz was contacted by coach heck but didn't call coach heck back thus you don't hear of the efforts by the coaches.

    Man.... think about this.

The plan was to take 5 in the beginning of the year.

We had 5 commit by the end of February. Then as the year goes on and they see the team up close more and more, they realized the depth was worse than they thought and they decide taking a 6th OL would be a good idea.

Except Massington had interviews where he said he'd be interested in M if we reestablished contact after he decommitted from/got kicked out of USC, but that renewed contact never happened. I think there were similar statements by LaRue too, but not 100% sure. Not saying they were M locks if we had shown interest obv, but I don't think the coaches tried hard (if at all) to rekindle things there.

I really think that after the coaches saw the writing on the wall with Treadwell and grabbed Jones, they decided they liked what they had and that 3 WR was enough. Which, frankly, they have a point...3 WR for this class was the plan from the beginning and we'll have 9 scholarship WRs next year, which is fine numbers wise. And that's assuming JD Lewis doesn't move to offense, which is v possible. We'd all love to have touted 4-star guys at WR in this class, but I think it's clear the coaches are happy with what they've got.

Offers don't really mean much, especially at the WR position.

Here are some WRs you may be familiar with:

Justin Blackmon: Best offer was Okie State, only other teams to offer were Mizzou, Northern Iowa, and Colorado.

Jerry Rice: Went to Mississippi Valley State University

Brandon Marshall: Went to University of Central Florida

Marques Colston: Went to Hofstra after turning down Mizzou

Steve Smith (Panthers): Started out at Santa Monica College after receiving no offers in high school and had to work his way to Utah

Chad Johnson: Teammate of Steve Smith at Santa Monica College and transferred to Oregon State

Eric Decker: 2* that went to Minnesota

Long story short, WR recruiting can be a roll of the dice and there are many misses by big time programs. You shouldn't base the WRs that are going to be attending Michigan by their offer sheets.

How many offers did Braylon Edwards have coming out of high school?

Yeah, definitely WRs come out of absolutely nowhere sometimes, Wes Welker is another great example. Actually, if you look at the top 10 NFL receivers by YPC this year, the best regarded coming out of high school was Torrey Smith...a 3* dual threat QB at the time. Only one other of them cracked three stars, the rest were 2* or non-FBS guys. Kind of crazy, really.

I actually kind of like York and Dukes a fair bit, especially York for his athleticism. If either of those guys develops real speed, look out. (Note, I haven't looked at Jones' tape at all so no opinion there, not trying to dis him).

Michigan will have 8 scholarship receivers - three seniors, a sophomore who hasn't caught a pass, and four freshmen. Eight seems a small number to me.

My argument isn't that none of these guys will pan out.

I'm concerned that Borges will need at least two redshirt freshmen in 2014, and its very unlikely that any two of these three will be ready to ball out after as a RS freshman.

I mean, Torrey Smith was a high three star - how many high three stars didn't turn into solid contributors? Torrey Smith is the big exception, not the norm.

Norfleet got moved to CB from his RB position, I dont think Lewis is going to play offense. Stop the speculation because we dont have awesome WR's....Lewis is a CB

Ok, so you sound like Sparty with your 3* mentality and coaching them up philosophy here. At Michigan we should expect to recruit highly regarded players across the board and every position. If you settle for mediocrity, that is what you will get. To analogize your grandiose NFL thoughts, we are looking for half a needle in a hay stack.

norfleet is never playing cb. they put him at cb in practice cause floyd was suspended. I never believe what the coaches are saying. coaches talking up norfleet like hes a great cb and that's why they are gonna put him there is a lie. it was just a cover up for the floyd suspension. they weren't going to tell you we are practicing fleet at cb because floyd is suspended; they didn't want anyone to know about the suspension.

Uh, it's not "speculation because we don't have awesome WRs" there have been heaps of interviews this year with Lewis where he's said that he's discussed playing offense with the coaches, along with other articles talking about how the offensive and defensive coaches are going to fight over him. Obviously if he does move to offense that will say bad things for how the rest of the WRs are turning out, but I'm not basing this on that, there have been plenty of reports on this topic.

Uh, who do you think you're talking to? I'm the one that's in the 2013 thread cheerleading for the coaches to get involved every time a big WR decommits or has coaching turmoil. I'm the one who got shouted down with "TRUST THE COACHES" after the questioning the Stribling, Sypniewski, and York offers this summer. I'm the one who catches flak for arguing that Deveon Smith is a nice player but not the potential game breaker we need at RB. I'm the one who is criticized for "not being realistic" about the coaches chances with top recruits from CA and the South. No one understands more than I do that elite programs require elite playmakers.

You're putting arguments in my mouth that I did not and would never make. The NFL post was only about remarking on a remarkable anomaly at the top of the NFL statistics this year. I have absolutely no interest in "settling for mediocrity." I expect that our coaches will go out and recruit and land the best players in the country. The only things I'm saying it are: (1) I think the coaches are done with recruiting WR in 2013 and (2) I think York and Dukes have a chance to turn into good players. That's it.

Norfleet's not a D-1 major program CB. He might have been moved there temporarily, but I will be stunned if he ends up there permanently.

It's awful. If an OL went down this past year, the options to replace him were either a freshman or a walk-on.
