  • I like it. Love how business like Dawson is and think he is going to be tough to keep off the field. Taco getting here early and focusing just on football instead of basketball would be a huge positive for him.

  • Very nice. Oline will be a huge questionmark next year so this helps a bit.

  • I love how this comes a couple days after he gets a USC offer. Some kids would try to take a visit, but Dawson? Hell no, now he just wants to be at Michigan even sooner. I think, when it's all said and done, Dawson could easily be the best lineman we get out of this fantastic class, despite being the lowest-ranked.

3 open spots for what? If your talking about enrolling early that's not true. You can have as many guys you want enroll early.

Actually IIRC the limit is 8.

You have to have scholarships available so you can't simply have "as many guys as you want." We have something like 82 right now, maybe less now because of some transfers but you can't go over the 85 scholarship limit.

What you're thinking about is something else, that rule applies to schollies per class.

So those kids who come in for the spring semester don't count against the schollie total until the fall semester?

I don't think so, as far as I understood you could backtrack 3 schollies for recruiting classes but the limit of early enrollees was 8. I'm not sure how the EE work towards scholly #'s. We'd probably have to check the rulebook out to see how it all works out.

I always thought you had to be at or below the 85 limit by the time fall practice starts? Could be wrong though

I always thought they counted their schollies as if they were a recruit from the previous class, taking up a scholarship as soon as they enroll but they still have full eligibility since they haven't played any games yet. I remember this being brought up with the Deanthony Arnett thing since we didn't have a schollie for him since we had the early enrollees taking up the scholarships.

I believe you are slightly mistaken my friend. At no point can you ever be above the 85 limit.

    (Fictional) Example:

Michigan has 85 scholarship players during the season.
Michigan has 4 players graduate mid-year (DEC) and decide to move on from football, thus they are no longer on scholarship.
Michigan also has 1 player declare early for the NFL draft and withdraws from school after the fall semester (DEC), he is no longer on scholarship.

Michigan is now at 80 scholarships and could have 5 guys enroll early (JAN).

    Real Example:

Joe Bolden, Jarrod Wilson, and Kaleb Ringer are all currently on scholarship and count towards the 85 scholarship limit right now.

Here's a link about it from MGoBlog.

NCAA Scholarship Limit Review | mgoblog

Since OSU weekend will be the number one recruiting weekend of the year and it is evident that Michigan has a significant number of holes to fill on defense, I decided to research the topic of scholarship rules and any changes that may impact this class. The most frequent questions seems to relate to a statement, by Sam Web on WTKA, that early enrol

This is from the NCAA rulebook about early enrollees.

"15.5.6.3.2 Recruited Student-Athlete Entering after Fall Term, Aided in First Year. [FBS/FCS] A student-athlete recruited by the awarding institution who enters after the first term of the academic year and immediately receives institutional financial aid (based in any degree on athletics ability) shall be an initial counter for either the current academic year (if the institution’s annual limit has not been reached) or the next academic year. The student-athlete shall be included in the institution’s total counter limit during the academic year in which the aid was first received."

  • So what's the final verdict, does this affect the 2013 class size at all? I'm simply ignorant in the scholarship numbers department.
