McGrath Set To Make Decision

With a decision date approaching, 2013 kicker J.J. McGrath lays out his thoughts on Michigan and Coach Hoke. Could they be his choice on Friday when he makes his decision?

  • I feel pretty good about landing this kid. Your thoughts Steve?

  • I'd love it if we landed him. It seems the quality of preferred walk ons has significantly risen since Hoke got on campus (Glasgows, Lawson, Kerridge, etc..) and I like it

I agree. Kenny Allen had a monster senior year as a punter/kicker and chose to walk on at Michigan over an (alleged) offer from Oregon State. Now if we can land McGrath too that is two huge legs on the roster that would keep the kicking game solid through 2018? And given how poor our kicking was just 3 seasons back, I'm all for using a scholarship here-and-there if there is a top prospect at the position.

If he goes Blue (and I suspect he will), he will beat out all other kickers. He has that good of a leg.

I'm liking the fact that we'd have Wile, Allen, and McGrath to shore up the kicking for years to come, and we'll only have one of them on scholarship.

  • Wile will lock down kicking next year. That said, always nice to have a stable of kickers. I think he will go blue.

I agree. Wile seems pretty solid. And as long as we're talking about kickers...I wanna give thanks to Gibby for knockin' down some big kicks the past 2 years. Clutch baby.

  • Just to bash RR some more lol ...but remember how HORRIBLE Gibbons was under the last administration? Geez. Yeah, he recovered nicely.

Seriously, how in god's name did Seth Broekhuizen ever take over for Gibbons? Good thing Hoke brought out his true talent.

Well, when your coach starts every press conference asking for random students to come try out because you suck, it might cause some people to get the yips.

Beware the Tao of the Freshman Kicker. There is a lot to learn from the Gibbons saga, most of which boils down to "young kickers are to be greatly feared."

...which is why I'm glad we have Matt Wile. Unless McGrath is truly exceptional, he'll sit for a year or two.

The problem is that Gibbons only has one more season and that will leave us with one scholarship kicker/punter for 2014. We have a couple walk-ons, but from what I've heard we really don't want to go there. We definitely need a second reliable kicker by 2014. McGrath could fit that bill or we could take a different one in the 2014 class. But with our move to a new "manball" offense, field position and even FGs are critical. If Wile were to get injured or become ineligible for any reason (i.e a bar fight, DUI, grades), we would be SOL. I don't know enough about McGrath to comment on him specifically, but if he is reasonably reliable under 45 yards and can punt he makes a lot of sense. Let's just hope he is willing to accept the gray shirt offer. We really don't have a scholly for him in 2013.

I think the plan is to have Kenny Allen take over punting, and he might even get some experience doing that in 2013, depending on what happens with Hagerup.

I still think Gibbons's struggles early are as much a product of his bad relationship with Rodriguez as anything. The guy was unfairly maligned and I think it killed his confidence early on.

Idk much about Kenny Allen. Is he good?
