McGary vs. Morgan - Who Ya Got As The Starter?

  • Title basically describes it all. There has been a growing desire among many to see McGary take over the starting role for Michigan. In fact, McGary was asked about this tonight in which he responded, "Hopefully I'll be in the starting lineup soon". Not trying to start any controversy here, but over the last five games McGary has actually played more minutes than Morgan (97 - 93). Granted, Horford's return has skewed the numbers a bit, but everyone can admit that McGary has been improving significantly over the past few games.

So, who do you guys think should get the starting nod and if McGary should start, how long before Beilein should make the change?

  • I'll take Morgan for now just because of his experience. I love the energy McGary brings, but he can't always control it. Plus, I don't know if he could effectively go all-out the way he does as a starter. He probably knows his minutes won't be numbered too high, and can afford to burn energy freely out there. As the season progresses, it may happen, but for now, I'd keep it how it is.

If Bielien does decide to make the change, I hope he does it soon. I don't want a lineup change really close to tournament time. That could affect team chemistry.

  • honestly, I think McGary coming off the bench is better. Doesn't really matter who starts, especially if McGary ends up playing more minutes. But he provides such a spark off the bench when he comes in, and that's very valuable IMO. If our guys get down at the beginning, he can give them a boost. He's the only player we have like that right now, and I like him coming off the bench.

  • I don't think it matter who starts. I just enjoy having a good option besides Morgan because last year was "Oh, shit!" when he had to leave the game due to foul trouble. McGary has been playing well lately, and having Horford is nice, too.

  • I first read this as McCray or Morgan...but McGary should come off the bench for now, like Ducks said.

  • I like Morgan at this point for experience purposes and I think he sets better screens for everyone.

  • I think McGary is getting equal minutes, so it is quite meaningless who starts.

  • Leave it the same. On a side note, I'm not as impressed with McGary. I thought he'd be such a force, but so far, looks like a good freshman player.

Reading the Sparty thread, they are sooo butt hurt over that guy. I think Mitch is going to hear some things when they play at the Breslin

  • The most important question is not who starts the game, but who's playing at the end of close games.
Right now I think these guys are so close that it doesn't matter, but I love McGary's energy, but Morgan is no slouch. Who plays at the end probably depends on who is hot at the free throw line and who is not. Horford will continue to take a few more minutes as time goes on which is also a good thing. I don't know that we have ever had depth like this. It is probably the most foul resistent team in the country.

  • Mcgary. The team plays loads better when he is in the game. Dude has endless energy and is a scrapper. Jordan is just too soft.

I've been really impressed myself. He brings a lot of intangibles that don't show up in the stat sheets. Give him an offseason with Sanderson to get his weight down and turn into muscle and he will flush a lot of those bunnies he misses now. He almost plays too fast right now, it'll slow down for him.
