After looking at his film and evaluating him for yourself, did you feel like he was underrated as a recruit?
“I don’t care about stars. And I really don’t. There are some five stars out there that I hope we play against. To me all I care is what we, our staff, when we look at the film and say yes he can play or no he can’t play. When we looked at this guy on film, we said, Wow, this is one that we want.’ I don’t care if he’s a five star, three star, or two star. Those are the kind of guys we want in this class.”

I trust Mattison i think he and Hoke do a good job at evaluating players. I just hope it doesn't take those players years to get on the field

I have a lot of faith in Hoke and Mattison. Together they built our all world 97 defense and Mattison went on to build both of the elite defenses that won Meyer his titles at Florida.

Jeremy Clark is one of the guys I'm most excited about in this class. He's a 6'4" safety with good speed, and most importantly, he earned his offer first hand. There is every reason to believe that this kid is better than the consensus, and the consensus was trending up rapidly during his senior year.

Go over to bucknuts and you'd think that Michigan has the higher class with how much they talk about them. I never realized how sensitive buckeye fans were until I went on bucknuts. Apparently we really hurt their feelings this year.

No surprise about Mattison's comment. Frankly, this year OSU had no choice but to look only at stars...even they will be slightly different going forward, I presume. Results matter a lot more.

Best quote on "stars" and all that is from someone working for this site who said if he could evaluate talent like a good college staff he would be making 5 times more money doing just that. Kind of ties in to what Mattison was saying.

Not sure where I was reading it (perhaps an article or a post on a board), but someone said that they were talking to an assistant coach at a BCS school about how their recruiting class and how great it was.
The coach basically said that coaches don't pay attention to rankings. They may look at them for guidance to determine guys they should take a look at that they hadn't thought of before, but the coaches' evaluations are what matters.
Also said that they had to take a 5* player that he knew would never play for them because they have to appear to be winning in recruiting for boosters. So Mattison's comments aren't surprising. The rankings don't mean much to coaches at all.

Coaches can't use stars as their basis for making an offer. If that were the case, every single coach at every single program would offer every single 5/4 star kid.
These coaches put in an unbelievable amount of time into recruiting. Honestly, I don't know how they have time to have a family.
