Mason Cole Commits to Michigan

  • Luger said...

Curious if UMRSB and bp1234 (not sure of the name honestly) consider this commitment a "battle". Beating USC, ND, bama, FSU and others.

Speaking only for myself, I think it falls into a different type of category as what I traditionally think of when I hear "battle." I think of battles as relatively head-to-head deals, where the player has gone through the process and eliminated all but a top 2 or 3. (Ex: Poggi, Green).

I agree with this definition of a "battle," but I think getting this kind of commitment is arguably even more impressive than winning a head-to-head battle. When you've done such a good job recruiting a kid from the other side of the country that he just discards his other elite offers, that says a lot.

  • See, all you guys needed was me to go to the groceries to get Cole to commit!

    Welcome, Mr. Cole!

I guess. We led the whole way. I consider Hood more of a battle. But ... do we really want to rehash that topic? Let it go bro ...

Oh, absolutely. Him being a FL kid and all, this is incredibly impressive, I didn't mean to say that it was any less impressive than a "battle." I look forward to this sort of thing happening more and more. Reminds me of Kugler last year - widely acknowledged as a special OL, promptly commits to Michigan and shrugs off all his other elite offers.

I think we were certainly in the conversation, high in the conversation for his entire recruitment. But not sure if we were his leaders, at least he never said that. Even if we lead the entire way, we didn't get to be the leader on accident no? We fought off USC, ND, Bama, FSU, and remained the leader no? To consider hood a battle and not cole I think undercuts the job done to get the kid. I'm no way a NASCAR guy, but would it be less impressive to win the Daytona 500 and lead the most laps vs not lead the most laps?

I'll let it go but I just had to bring it up one last time because it just appears on the surface that you downplay these type of commitments ( although ironically you make them a big deal if the commitment didn't occur--drawing conclusions and such) but give more weight to recruitments like Hood I guess because we weren't the presumed leader from get.

Not intending to derail the news and I agree with others on the intrepretation of a battle can be different things. I Guess my main point is after this diatribe, with the exception of a few kids like Shane who grow up UM fans, all recruitments will be battles because UM isnt Bama right now, meaning kids arent yearning left and right to come here. each one of these commitments, especially the early ones should be praised and not forgotten when January comes around and folks want the shimmer and shine of hat battle wins.

Supposedly only taking one OL this year (I know, and I think that number goes up to 2 eventually). Current offers/top targets are: Andrew Mike, Quenton Nelson, Noah Beh, Alex Bars. Sounds like Bushell-Beatty is close to an offer, and Michael Grimm is a guy they're targeting as well.

How many OL spots does Michigan have this year? 3-4?

Yeah, most likely 3-4 depending on who takes the spots up at what time.

Have you guys heard anything about Bars lately?

Nothing much. I think he's got another sport going on right now, and will probably take visits later.
