If the kid envisions himself as a DE, and wants to be the next Gholston coming out of high school... being told by others outside of the Michigan staff that DT would be in his future is an example of negative recruiting, no?
I just found that comment odd.

It varies from school to school, but in general, they don't make much. Generally, it's room, board, tuition (for the schools that require you to actually attend grad school) and a monthly stipend. The stipend varies depending on the school.
