M Targets Ratings/Status Spreadsheet

  • Just created this spreadsheet that I thought might be useful for people. The idea is to have a centralized place where people can compare the ratings and recruitment statuses (e.g., have they named a top group? Is Michigan part of that top group? etc.) of Michigan targets as the recruiting season moves on. Here's the link:

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Apd1J-h45u1gdDRjVE1SeVFZZmkwN0lUS3RibEFVVlE&usp=sharing

The list of players comes mostly from the list of targets/offers on this site. My goal is to have the list be as comprehensive as possible rather than culling it as recruits drop us or as we stop recruiting them. In other words, it's not meant to be a list that strictly reflects prospects we have a realistic chance with at any moment in time, but rather a reference so that you can look, down the road, at who the coaches have been targeting from the beginning of the process and what's been going on with them. If people think this is an interesting/valuable thing to have, I'd like to keep the info in it as up-to-date as possible for the rest of the recruiting cycle.

Right now, I'd like input on a couple things: (1) whether you think this sort of thing is worth the effort; (2) what additions you think might make it more useful; (3) input on whether I missed any names that should be on there (note: some offered recruits like Kalen Ballage were intentionally left off because they haven't been rated by any of the sites yet, so there just wasn't a point); and (4) input on the "status" and "notes" sections. WRT those section, I did a quick check online and used my memory to come up with recruits that had named leaders/etc, but I'm sure I missed some people, so if you guys could point me to recruits that I missed for that, that would be greatly appreciated. goblue

I like it - this is something that should be linked in the first post of the 2014 Recruits thread. I also think you should give access to the spreadsheet to Clarkw267, because he's got that "2014 by Interest Level" thread going, and this way the two of you could monitor and update the spreadsheet.

    Great idea.

  • I really like all the info provided in the spreadsheet. Is there a way to make it so when you click on one of the columns, it'll sort the entries? What I mean, is if I click the name column, it'll sort them alphabetically. If I click the position column, it'll sort them as well. Etc.

This is exactly what I was hoping I'd be able to get it to do when I started, but I haven't figured it out yet. It seems like there should be a way to do it...Google Docs tries to be Excel-in-the-cloud and there's definitely a way to do that in Excel.

This is a good idea, I'll PM him to see if he's interested

OK, so I figured out a way to kind of do it, but it doesn't work very well...it doesn't really know what to do with all the non-numeric values, doesn't take the color-coding, and its fairly impossible to navigate. I think I'm going to have to table making the thing sortable at least until all the prospects have some sort of numeric rating, unless some Google Docs wizard can help me out.

  • We should have something that tracks our targets/commits rankings. It would be interesting to see where they are ranked at the end of the recruiting year as opposed to where they are now.

    I'm here.. Nice work!

    I'd be down for that.

A couple of things that would be up in the air are:

What to do with guys like McDowell who haven't really released a list, but we are near the top for?

Also maybe the 247 rankings should be moved to the left of the Rivals ones?

ok cool, PM me your google account info and I'll add you

Yeah, I'm not sure what to do about things like McDowell (I believe Mone would have been in this boat before yesterday too). My inclination is to put something in the notes but not color code them, thoughts? edit: my only hesitation with that is that I want the thing to be based on relatively hard facts and so much of that "presumed leader" stuff, especially this early, is hogwash. Like, if I had done this two weeks ago, it would have said "M presumed leader" next to Damon Webb and Lawrence Marshall.

List is now sorted by 247 national rank, which is now furthest left.

Yeah I know what you mean.

Kids like Helm, Holmes, McDowell, Bars, Henderson, Cole, Nicholson... etc.

I beleive we are in the top 5 for (some even top 2 or 3) but they haven't put out an official list.

  • Very nice. thumbsup

Would it be possible to make the columns narrower though? Just think it would be easier to scan. Maybe less bright colors too. Maybe make a progression of colors? Maize :favorite, orange: top 5, darker orange: top group, brown: eliminated, grey:turned to the dark side, blue: committed

JC stated a couple of days ago that they plan on having that up and running this cycle.

nicely done, +1 for you. The way I was trying to do it before was as a sortable table, and it was just a nightmare.
