Let's Rank 2014 QB's

  • This is all my amateur eye and would like to see what others and Clint/Todd have to say. They are in order in which I like them.

Andrew Ford -To me he has the more natural throwing motion out of the '14 QB's that we are after. I liked his spot around 1:40 where he is off-balance and almost jumping and flicks the ball 30 yards downfield. You don't see many other big throws in the film also. I read 6'3" to 6'2" which is fine but anything under that I start to wonder about his size.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpintYzp7lU&feature=player_embedded\

Drew Barker - I think I had a negative mindset going into seeing his HL film because they run that read-option a lot. But he throws a really like ball, around 1:05, 1:55. 4:38 he has good touch on it. I did not see him throw a lot of deep balls, he also has a hellva stiff arm. He also looks like a legit 6'3".

Caleb Henderson - He has a big arm and can make all the throws. He also stands tall in the pocket. Around 4:32 he chucks the ball downfield a good 55 yards. I would say the main negative is that he plays in a spread offense and it looks like when he doesn't see his first guy open he takes off and runs.

    http://www.hudl.com/athlete/1460934/highlights/19894382

Deshone Kizer - To me he has the most potential of the group. Love his size, he looks a legit 6'4". He throws a pretty good long ball @ 5:40. I think the main problem with Kizer is that he has a long delivery and that he holds the ball low so every time he throws it he has to bring it up.
    http://247sports.com/Player/DeShone-Kizer-17704
    http://www.hudl.com/athlete/464083/highlights/18313425

Tyler Wiegers - Local kid with good size. I think his junior film may surprise a few people, he did not have much sophomore film, but looks like he has a quick release and plays in a pro-style offense.
    http://247sports.com/Player/Tyler-Wiegers-20413

Luke Ward - A name that just popped up and only film I can find is from a phone. He looks like a legit 6'3" who throws a nice spiral, but from what I saw the part I like the most is he keeps his head downfield when he has to scramble in the pocket. Most the other QB's I just watched just take off and run.

Here are a few others to keep an eye on:
    Drew Doxtator

Will Grier- Didn't bother watching him, think he stays South.

  • My completely amateur opinion:

    1. DeShone Kizer
    2. Caleb Henderson
    3. Drew Barker
    4. Coleman Key

  • I haven't seen all of them, so tough to rank...but I saw Kizer play last year, and he looks like the real deal.

Only film Key has is a 2 minute clip on ESPN, so really hard to tell anything. And watch the Ford HL you will like him.

  • IMO, I think the fact that we have Shane Morris in 2013 will allow us to take a raw guy with huge potential. That guy is Kizer. He has a long way to go and there's definitely a risk there that he won't pan out, but having Shane allows us to take that risk on Kizer. I'd love to take a guy with his size and athleticism.

I forgot he moved to '14. I think I still like those 4 guys higher.

What if something happens to Morris or doesn't preform, I don't think they can take risks at the QB spot unless they take 2 guys in '14.

I gotta agree with that, you can never know 100% how a kid will turn out and there's always the possibilitly of injury. We have almost no depth at qb so we really need to hit well again in 2014.

  • I want Kizer, and it's not really close. Im not sure what the coaches are doing with qb recruiting, but they seem to be taking it really really slow identifying who they want to target. I just hope this approach does not cost us a guy like Kizer who grew up a Michigan fan.

How is it not close? I think he has the most work to do.

  • Great stuff here! I'm busy with the Jake Butt article right now, but I'll chime in in this thread over the weekend.

if he gets injured we still have bellomy. its not like we would put in a 2014 guy if morris goes down when bellomy is still on the team.

I am saying you don't take a '14 guy just because of his potential, you take the most talented kid. If you are going to take a kid off potential like Kizer then you take a kid like Wiegers as well who is more polished.

why not. if the kid has the potential to be something special, go for it. we have morris, and if morris goes down we can put bellomy in. if the 2014 qb don't pan out we will probably have a good 2015 kid. having morris and bellomy allows you to take a risk on kizer. I'll rather take henderson though.

  • Right now Morris is potential as well. I want as close to a sure thing as possible.

  • I posted this the other day:

Honestly, aren't we over analyzing all of these potential 2014 QB offers Michigan is considering? There are around 8-10 kids who are commensurate in ability and capabilities. The trained eye of the coaches and what they want to accomplish on the field may rate certain nuances slightly higher then others, but to me all of these 2014 QB's are all the same....we are going to offer some really good prospects, and whoever jumps on board is good with me. The vetting process has determined these kids are the contenders, and I cant justify that one of them is better then the other at this point.

But after posting this, I believe the most critical intangible is running ability. All these QB's are similar in projected talent, but the ones that can get it done with their feet and scramble (in addition to being accurate passers and progression readers), and picking up that critical 1st down by improvising are my favorites.

Isn't that what this site is for though containing your first paragraph, to look at the film and see who would best fit UM.

    Also added Wiegers Junior film

    Michmania

  • I will rank these QBs after they complete their junior seasons.

Of the choices listed, I am most fond of Caleb Henderson and then DeShone Kizer. I think Henderson is the most polished and complete player. I think Kizer has the most potential but also has a big learning curve.

Hence, I hope that Michigan is fortunate enough to secure commitments from these complementary QBs.

He is still playing lights out without his TE, Adam Breneman.

  • I am intrigued by Andrew Ford.

He seems to be in the mold of Kellen Moore - a ruthlessly efficient lefty QB that wrecks defenses with accuracy and precision.

Sure, but I have no interest in speculating what is the best order of our 8-10 QB prospects for the class. I just want someone with mobility, who is not like John Navarre, who gives us more dual threat.....Who would this be from your analysis guys? I know Kizer and Barker are probably near the top for mobility.
