    D'yer Mak'er - Led Zeppelin (1973)

"D'yer Mak'er" (intended to be pronounced in a British non-rhotic accent as 'Jamaica', /dʒəˈmeɪkə/) is a song by English rock band Led Zeppelin, from their 1973 album "Houses Of The Holy". This song was meant to imitate reggae and its 'dub' derivative emerging from Jamaica in the early 1970s. Its genesis is traced to Led Zeppelin's rehearsals at Stargroves in 1972, when drummer John Bonham started with a beat similar to 1950s doo-wop, and then twisted it into a slight off-beat tempo, upon which a reggae influence emerged. The distinctive drum sound was created by placing three microphones a good distance away from Bonham's drums. "D'yer Mak'er" is one of the few Led Zeppelin songs where all four members share the composer credit. The sleeve on the album also gives tribute to Rosie And The Originals, a reference to the doo-wop influence which was evident in the song's style. This track, as well as another song entitled "The Crunge", was initially not taken seriously by many listeners, and some critics at the time reserved their harshest criticism for these two tracks. Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones has also expressed his distaste for the song, suggesting that it started off as a joke and wasn't thought through carefully enough. However, "D'yer Mak'er" has gathered critical respect in the years since, and has grown into a Led Zeppelin classic. Upon the album's release, Robert Plant was keen to issue the track as a single in the United Kingdom. Atlantic Records went so far as to distribute advance promotional copies to DJs (now valuable collectors' items). While it was released in the U.S., and the single peaked at #20 in December 1973, it was ultimately never released in the U.K. The name of the song is derived from an old joke: "My wife's gone to the West Indies." "Jamaica?" (which has a similar pronunciation as "D'you make her?") "No, she went of her own accord". The title, which appears nowhere in the lyrics, was chosen because it reflects the reggae flavor of the song. Robert Plant has said that he finds it amusing when fans completely ignore the apostrophes and pronounce it as "Dire Maker". Led Zeppelin were an English rock band. Formed in 1968 in London, the group consisted of guitarist Jimmy Page, singer Robert Plant, drummer John Bonham and bassist John Paul Jones. With their heavy, guitar-driven blues-rock sound, Led Zeppelin are regularly cited as one of the progenitors of heavy metal and hard rock, even though the band's individualistic style drew from many sources and transcends any one music genre. More than thirty years after disbanding following Bonham's death in 1980, Led Zeppelin continue to be held in high regard for their artistic achievements, commercial success, and broad influence. The band have sold over 300 million albums worldwide, including 111.5 million certified units in the United States, making them one of the world's best-selling music artists of all time, as well as the second best-selling band of all time in the United States, only behind The Beatles. They have had all of their original studio albums reach the top 10 of the Billboard album chart in the U.S., with six reaching the number one spot. Rolling Stone magazine has described Led Zeppelin as "the heaviest band of all time", "the biggest band of the '70s" and "unquestionably one of the most enduring bands in rock history". Similarly, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame described the band as being "as influential in that decade [70s] as The Beatles were in the prior one". On front row radio they interviewed McDowell today and he said OSU was his childhood favorite and when he trims down his list that OSU will be on top! I guess what I'm trying to say is we don't need recruits like Webb to help recruit McDowell because he loves OSU already and we are his #1 school. All Urban need to do is stay in his ear and keep telling him if he wants to win B1G championships and compete for National Championship then OSU is the place for him!

  • Actually, Urban needs to do more than just recruit.

    He needs to win.

If Ohio has a 9-3 season in 2013 with losses to Purdue, Nebraska, and Michigan, that'll be hard to spin.

  • This kid is the best looking highschool recruit I've seen come out of the Midwest since maybe Terrell Pryor. His upside is off the charts. He should be number one on every programs recruiting board north of the dixie line. DLinemen with his genetics are a rare find anywhere, but especially up north. Kid looks like a bigger, stronger, more athletic Aldophus Washington. This is the only "must get" recruit in 14 imo. No other comparable talent and he's in our backyard.

Prepare to be disappointed. McDowell will end up at Notre Dame.

  • I'm not saying Michigan will land him. I have no idea. My guess is the outcome of the upcoming season will play a role. Life goes on if he goes elsewhere. Just being real that a talent like this only comes around maybe once a decade. There's no downplaying his importance. If we lose out its a huge loss. Doesn't guarantee he'll be a great football player, but his potential is limitless if he puts it together with his physical gifts.

Seriously why do you even bother posting? You think your an insider but you know absolutely nothing about recruiting. You said yesterday that Marshall was all about OSU and him being on campus didn't mean anything. How'd that work oit for you bud? Next I believe you might hit me with Shane Morris is transferring after a year at Michigan due to lack of playing time and plans to fully enroll at MSU. Save yourself the time and quit making asine assumptions

i think nd is out front, ive said it. Im just not willing to write him off before his recruitment even starts. He has visited everyone a bunch for the day and to see some games. what he has not done, is really spend time on campuses and talking to coaches and departments. ill save my judgement for down the road

The 3 DL specialists on this staff will keep him home... He runs so well for being that large... His size/athleticism combo is extremely high...

Over on Bucknuts there is a radio show called Front Row Radio where they interview prospect and they had McDowell on today and he said EXACTLY what i posted so unless you are calling him a liar your going to have to deal with him having OSU at the top of his list! Im not going to come to your guys boards and lie just to lie and start $hit..thats not me! Like i said in my post he said he grew up a big OSU fan and they asked him if he got a lot of heat being in the state of Mich and being a OSU fan and he said they didn't mess with him to much! I posted what the kid said so like i said earlier unless he is a liar this is how he feels and you guys need to realize he actually may pick the Bucks over that school up north!

he didn't say they were his leader though. he said they will be at the top, which means ohio, UM. and ND will all be at the top. also, he was a fan of ohio; but he was also a fan of UM. you made it seem like he's a huge ohio fan and they are his leader.
